See all Harrisburg Intl. car rentals

Philadelphia and Pittsburgh are usually the main cities people picture when they think of Pennsylvania, but Harrisburg should absolutely be at the top of that list, too. As the state capital, you’ll find everything from history to wildlife to a lively local culture to keep your travel itinerary full. Harrisburg is a large city and surrounded by a couple of areas that make for exciting day trips, so a car will allow you to get around efficiently and truly enjoy all that the city has to offer.

What to See in Harrisburg

No trip to Harrisburg would be complete without a visit to the State Capitol Building. Most government buildings aren’t designed to look stunning, but this one is truly breathtaking and created with the highest craftsmanship. Even Theodore Roosevelt thought so, calling it “the handsomest building” he ever saw. Public tours take place every day of the week and last about thirty minutes, giving you insight into some of the finer architectural and artistic details.

Museum-goers will truly appreciate the Pennsylvania National Fire Museum, home to many pieces of firefighting equipment throughout history in the United States. Modern technology has vastly changed the tools that firefighters use, and this eye-opening museum offers exhibits to show what the job was like decades and centuries ago. The beautiful restored collection of engines alone is worth the visit.

Enjoy some delicious food at Broad Street Market located downtown. Home to nearly forty vendors who offer everything from organic produce to fresh meats and baked goods to mouthwatering meals, this market has something for everyone.

Pennsylvania is filled with natural beauty, and Harrisburg is no different. Drive along Front Street to see the majestic Susquehanna River, which runs right through the middle of the city. Just north of the city center you’ll find Wildwood Park, an amazing spot to picnic. Here, you can snap beautiful photos or go for a light walk.

If you’re interested in a few day trips outside of Harrisburg, you have plenty of options. The most notable place to stop is Hershey, Pennsylvania, the home of Hershey’s chocolate. For those with a sweet tooth, this is the place to be. You can take tours of the factory, indulge in chocolate tastings, or even make your own candy bar at Hershey’s Chocolate World. You’ll also find the amusement park called Hersheypark which is filled with roller coasters, music shows, a zoo, and even a spa.

For something a little more laid-back, head north of Harrisburg to Lake Tobias Wildlife Park. Here, you will discover a number of wild and exotic animals from all over the world, and you can get up-close and personal on safari tours or in the petting zoo.
