Located right by Onondaga Lake in Central New York, Syracuse caters to both outdoor and city fans. To maximize your getaway with as many trips as you like and whenever you like, why not rent a car straight from the airport to not miss a minute that could be spent out and exploring?

What to See in Syracuse

There is no need to pack big when visiting Syracuse, because the city is home to the biggest shopping mall in New York State, called Destiny USA. Here you will find the biggest retail stores lined up next to factory stores and outlets giving 30 to 70 percent discounts. However, that is not all. Destiny USA also has a movie theater, a bowling alley, a food court, and plenty of other ways to keep you busy for a full day.

When the weather is nice, it is more fun to be outside, so drive to Onondaga Lake to go fishing. The largemouth bass in the lake often swim in shallow water, so you can easily stay on shore while trying your luck. There are even facilities for accessible fishing. Just make sure you have a fishing permit.

Rather not take your chances? Visit one of the many food trucks in the city or buy a picnic and take it to Onondaga Lake Park to eat by the water. Afterward, walk one of the park’s trails or watch inline skaters, skateboarders and BMX riders perform dazzling stunts at the skate park.

You might even spot a famous chef or two, as many of Syracuse’s restaurants have been featured in television shows such as “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” and “Man vs. Food”. A special mention goes out to Dinosaur Bar-B-Que, voted the Best Barbeque in America in ABC's "Good Morning America Weekend" poll. Now part of a chain, this Syracuse establishment is an original and loved among locals and visitors alike for its great food and live music.

Syracuse and the greater New York economy do well and a lot of that is thanks to the Erie Canal, connecting New York City and the Atlantic Ocean in the East to the Greater Lakes in the West. At The Erie Canal Museum, visitors can learn about the history and impact of the canal through a detailed and interactive exhibition as well as a video documentary. An extra reason for visiting is that the museum is housed in the weigh lock building in the United States.
