Renting a car in Syracuse: What you need to know

Renting a car in Syracuse means complying with car rental rules in New York State, including the ones below.

How old do I have to be to rent a car in Syracuse?

If you’re over the age of 18, you’re entitled to rent a car in New York State. Bear in mind, though, that some rental agencies may charge extra for drivers under the age of 25.

Age discrimination is prohibited by law, so typically there will not be a maximum age limit imposed for older drivers.

Is any kind of driving license valid for car rental in Syracuse?

To rent a car in Syracuse, you must hold a full driving license from your country of origin. If this isn’t the United States, then you don’t need an International Driving Permit, but it can be helpful – if, for example, you are pulled over by the police and your license is not written in English.

Is a credit card required when booking a rental car?

No – car rental firms in New York State are prohibited from discriminating against drivers who don’t have credit cards. However, if you don’t have one, you may have to pay a large cash deposit and undergo a screening process, which can take several days.

Are additional drivers allowed?

Yes. By law, your spouse must be allowed to drive the vehicle too if they are over the age of 18 and licensed. Other drivers can be added for a charge of up to $3 per day.
