Honolulu is home to some of Hawaii’s most historic places and iconic landmarks. The city is also the state’s hotspot if you’re going for arts, culture and entertainment. Besides that, of course you can also experience the two things that Hawaii is known for most: its great weather and tropical surroundings. To be able to experience it all during your trip, why not rent a car directly at the airport to take you from point A to point B?

What to See in Honolulu

The touristic center in Honolulu and Hawaii is the neighborhood Waikiki. It houses many luxury hotel towers and almost half of all tourists visiting Hawaii stay in this area. This is the reason why you will find many malls, bars, and restaurants in the area. Waikiki beach is also pretty popular with tourists for its stunning beauty and wonderful shoreline.

Want to see more than other tourists shopping, eating out, and enjoying the weather? Make sure to discover Honolulu and its surroundings! One of the most important sights is Pearl Harbor. It went down in history as the target of a Japanese surprise attack in December 1941, which entangled the United States of America in World War II. There are several memorials and sites to be seen and to better understand its historical significance.

Meanwhile, art enthusiast should take the time to visit the Arts District of Honolulu, located in downtown Chinatown. This 12 block area is home to a considerable amount of arts and cultural institutions. Are you more of a nature lover? Honolulu is home to several botanical gardens, which together make up the Honolulu Botanical Gardens. There are five in total and most can be visited for free. The goal of the gardens is preservation of rare plants, facilitating study of botany, to teach and to make recreation possible. It is said the botanical gardens keep the biggest collection of tropical plants in the USA.

Afterwards, hike to the top of the iconic Diamond Head State Monument for stunning views of Waikiki and Honolulu. A round trip should take about two hours. If you’re not much of a hiker, take the Round Top Drive, from where you can still see the exquisite views over Honolulu, Waikiki, and surroundings. Another marvelous view can be had from Aloha Tower, the lighthouse that welcomes millions of visitors to Honolulu annually. It used to be the tallest structure in Hawaii over four decades.

Of course, there are many more sights and attractions to be visited in and around Honolulu. What about the Ala Moana Center, the biggest shopping mall in the state and the biggest outdoor shopping center in the world? Then, there is the Bishop Museum, which is the biggest museum in Honolulu, which has the state’s largest collection of natural history specimens and the world’s largest collection of Hawaiiana and Pacific culture artifacts. You also cannot miss the Iolani palace, the only royal palace within the borders of the USA. The palace dates from when Hawaii was a kingdom. Interestingly, it had electricity and a phone connection available before the White House did!
