It’s a good idea to start your visit to Alabama State at the Birmingham Museum of Arts. As one for the finest museums in the country, the building houses over 26,000 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures, and other decorative art forms from ancient and modern times. Ranging from Asian, European, American, African, and Native American art work, there are hundreds of pieces of work to whet your appetite for fine art. One exhibit not to miss is the Christenberry Collection. The famous homegrown talent, hailing from Tuscaloosa, is famous for his iconic photographs of the state’s changing landscape. The museum holds over 50 Polaroids of his early work and hopes to become a center for study for this talented and celebrated Alabama artist.
If you prefer a night at the theatre, you shouldn’t miss out on The Alabama Theater. Built in 1927 by Paramount Studios, it was used primarily as a Paramount movie theatre for 55 years. Occasionally, it was also used to host the annual Miss Alabama Beauty Pageant and the weekly Mickey Mouse Club. However, the owners declared bankruptcy in 1987 and Birmingham Landmarks Inc has since managed the Theater. It now hosts over 300 events a year and is attended by half a million tourists and Birmingham locals. Why not go backstage with an hour-long tour and get up close to Big Bertha, the mighty Wurlitzer organ?
In case the great outdoors is calling you, know that you’re never far from the wild in Birmingham. Railroad Park is a huge green space in the center of town and has become the first choice for locals looking to grab a picnic and catch up with friends. For visitors, the park is also home to the Birmingham History Wall, which timelines the city’s growth through images and key events.
For the more adventurous traveler, the Red Mountain Park’s many walking, hiking, or biking trails are highly recommended. There are also two overlooks well worth the visit. You can get marvelous views across the countryside. If you’re looking for fun activities for the family, why not give ziplining a go?
