Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Town Cape Castle

3.0 out of 5.0

Were upgraded from studio to standard room-very spacious, corner suite, road facing with small balcony and good view. Crisp linen, comfy beds and pillows. Perfect house cleaning daily. Kitchenette comes in handy after long day exploring and eating out. 15 min walk to Waterfront with Spar three blocks to the left of hotel and Woolworths 3 blocks to the right for supplies. Pots, pan and extra utensils were supplied on request. Cushions on sofa were to worn for comfort-discovered after 2 days of stewing about this that sofa was replaced as soon as we brought it to staff's attention so don't hesitant to ask. Traffic noise only audible with balcony door open.

The Protea by Marriott is beside the Sugar Hotel at the junction of Somerset and Boundary - the ominously named Gallows Hill area. Close enough to jog to the waterfront, but you probably wouldn't want to try that at night. A taxi to the waterfront is Rand 50 to 60 fixed fare for tourists, less on the meter. There is secure underground parking but the street entrance is an unmanned, fortified blue buzz gate rather than a drop off. The airport is about 25 mins away with taxis available but no hotel shuttle. It is not an expensive hotel and the lobby is homely rather than expansive and breakfast has a cosy guest house feel. As another reviewer said here, the facilities are "average" but the staff are excellent. The service team are a credit to South Africa in their positive attitudes, the wifi worked and the rooms had studio fit out of living area and bedroom, so they were spacious. Only one international adapter socket was available, the rest are those unique South African plugs, so make sure you have your own conversion socket if you are from abroad. There is a small pool but if you need the gym you have to go to the Protea down the road - a 500m walk to Victoria Junction. It's easy to jog to the waterfront and then on to Sea Point, though.

This hotel is a perfect example of what a hotel should look and feel like. It's location is very good; in a quite neighborhood (century city), and has a gym, ATM, shopping mall within 2 minutes walking distance. Some of the rooms have an amazing view of the table mountain. Free parking is available. The hotel is very nice and modern. There is a nice bar to enjoy good wines and tapas. A good restaurant for excellent steaks. Breakfast is also very complete and delicious. The pool is a bit small but has a nice view. The spa is very good and affordable, I wasn't amused that my masseuse kept on selling products to me during my massage. The rooms are very nice, modern and sophisticated. Very clean rooms and big enough. Love the pink light setting, mirrors and the automatic tv stand. The room is more for couples then for friends, the bathroom is completely open and doesn't offer any privacy. Wifi works perfect and staff is very friendly and helpful. There is a car rental service which i can also recommend and a good concierge service. The hotel also provides a bus service to waterfront.

This is an older hotel and not a typical Marriott property that you may be accustomed too. If I was just rating the facility, I'd give it an "average". But the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff prompted me to rate this property as "very good". Our room was a large efficiency, with a small sink, refrigerator, and tea/coffee making station. The bathroom was small, but functional. WiFi was hit or miss, but we could easily access the Internet in the lobby area. The breakfast area was small and intimate, with assorted fresh fruit, pastries and hot foods available. The hotel is located near the Waterfront but it was suggested that we not walk to/from there in the dark. Free parking with 24/7 security is available. Although a bit outdated, I think it was a good value and would definitely recommend it for a short stay in Cape Town. What a beautiful city!

This was our first stay at the Cape Castle hotel and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room and bathroom were big and comfortable. We also had a huge lounge with kitchenette and a very big balcony overlooking the whole of table bay. We saw the most amazing sunrises from our balcony! The hotel is very old and reception area and lifts are run-down, but they are busy with upgrades to the hotel. The best thing about this hotel, is that there are many nice restaurants within walking distance. And the bed was exceptionally comfortable. We'll stay again.

The name of the hotel is misleading as it implies that it is near the Cape Castle when it is closer to the stadium than the castle which is not even within walking distance from this property. The hotel is old world, not easily accessible if you are walking around and parking is a tight fit all round. There are several Protea hotels in Cape Town, many of which are far newer than this hotel and better decorated and modern. The pool was drained during my visit and there was no signs to the guests indicating this. There is no free shuttle service to any shopping centre nor is there free pick up and drop off to the CT international airport. The staff are ill informed about services available to guest. If you have a choice of places to stay in CT then do not choose this hotel as it could ruin your stay in a beautiful city.

I spent nearly 1.5 months at the beginning of a professional assignment here. After some initial issues with a noisy room, Conrad the manager was quickly able to address the issues and offer me a better room (and rate) that allowed me to stay there for longer, instead of moving out as I otherwise may have done. The hotel has a great location - walking distance to CBD, and the waterfront, as well as to nearby shops and restaurants (particularly recommend El Burro, best Mexican in town!) The views are pretty nice, too, the staff is good, and the parking is convenient. I tried the breakfast once - there could be healthier options, but all in all, the hotel was a great start and end to my assignment in Cape Town

Stunning environment. Centrally located. Efficient and friendly staff. Amazing breakfast. Safe parking. Clean rooms, attractive decor, well laid out rooms. Definitely not to be overlooked by any traveler to Cape Town. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

The venue is well located with view of the V & A Waterfront and the rear side you can get a view of Table mountain. Has a facility for self catering as well which gives you the option. In house dinner is not too good.

At check-in, room was not ready at designated check-in time. Staff at reception were extremely unhelpful and painfully quite. Didn't offer solutions to fix the problem and laughed at us when asked for a solution. Every morning we came to breakfast, staff were sitting at the tables on their cellphones. Again.. reception terribly unfriendly. Only one lift working in the hotel which meant we had to share the lift with the dustbins, laundry trolleys and cleaning equipment. Very old and rundown and in serious need of a facelift. Not worth the price you pay per night
