I visited the hotel in the 80's when my company funded my attendance at a conference and I wanted to re-visit it with my partner to test my memories. It's a short tram ride from the city centre - take the 3, 8 or 15 to Romerhof and you''l find the entrance to the Dolderbahn just next door to the UBS office. At the end of the 10 minute journey up, about a 100 yards just down the hill from the station at the top is an entrance that takes you eventually into the hotel proper. There we were greeted by a beautifully decorated Christmas tree - absolutely stunning! It's a prestigous hotel, very much in what I would call the Swiss style - hugely understated elegance and superlative service. The location gives you a stunning view of the lake and the city - although it was too cold to linger outside. We intended just to stay for coffee but as the morning wore on we decided to have a light lunch as well. The menu is pleasantly varied and our requested shared Caesar salad was well presented in individual bowls accompanied by a good selection of bread. It's a Swiss five star hotel where the room rates are £500+ so be prepared!
We went up with the Dolderbahn for a coffee in the lobby of the Dolder Grand. The coffee was excellent and service impeccable. More strikingly, we found out the hotel is a veritable top notch museum of modern art! The centerpiece is a genuine 11 meter wide Andy Warhol above the front desk. But also a genuine installation by Jean Tinguely in the lobby! And reputedly soms 100 more top pieces by Botero, Nikki de St Phalle, etc. The glorious new wings around the old castle designed by Norman Foster in a major renovation between 2004-2008. Outstanding!
I arrived to the hotel pretty late and very tired after some meetings, but the friendly lady at the reception still had a warmhearted smile upon check-in. She even offered me a beautiful upgrade to a spacious junior suite on a higher floor with a great panoramic view over the entire city. An elegant selection of chocolates and fruits had been carefully prepared, the bath room was so spacious and impressive in terms of design and materials! The morning after I was received again with a big smile at the breakfast area, where colourful straw and raspberries were generously offered amongst the buffet. I had to leave early, but the spa seems to be a great venue to let your hair down. Certainly a hotel to return!
My friend and I were treated like queens from the minute we arrived - they even accidentally put her name down as her majesty which we couldn't stop laughing at! The hotel is so beautiful and set in a picturesque location looking over the city (which resembles a village more than a city). The highlight for me was the gorgeous and peaceful spa.
Was guest of a client at this hotel. It is mix of early 20th century and 21st century. A lot of the decor from the original building has been sympathetically preserved and intermingled you find some amazing artworks. The modern wing is most definitely 21st century relying on technology for pretty much everything in the rooms which are comfortable and spacious. The restaurant where we dined gave great views across Zürich and its lake which only enhanced the quality of the dining experience. As you would expect from a hotel of this quality the menu was varied and the quality and presentation of the food was first rate as was the service. I would certainly stay here if I was visiting Switzerland. It is only 10-15 minutes from central Zürich and is set in park. If you are up to short walk there is a funicular railway nearby to carry you to and from the city.
I stayed at this wonderful hotel for a night with my wife. The hotel itself is very nice, beautiful view on the lake and the golf Parc. Staff was very friendly and kind - we definitely enjoyed our stay.
The Grand Dolder first opened in 1899; it sets up on a hill just above the main downtown area of the city. It is an easy walk to the Funicular that will take you up or down a steep slope to and from the hotel. This hotel is the Queen of hotels in Zurich. It represents a time gone by. The public areas are large and grand; the rooms are big, bright, and well appointed. The staff is part of a large family of employees who take great pride in this hotel and demonstrate this by their attention to detail, and courteous interaction with guests. Close to Old Town just across the canal, minutes from the train station, and other visitor attractions. MY recommendation is that if in Zurich and time permits treat yourself to at least a one night stay.
This was our first visit to Switzerland, after hours of searching for somewhere to go for dinner on our first night (my Birthday) I came across the Saltz restaurant, myself and 5 others booked in for dinner. This hotel does not disappoint! the first glimpse of it on the way up the mountain was stunning, it looked like something out of a fairy tale! the view from the hotel itself is gorgeous! from the moment you pulled up you were being looked after, the inside of the hotel was just as stunning as the outside. we were a little early so decided to pop for a drink at the hotel bar, the bar was incredible, floating lights, amazing décor and very knowledgeable staff. the drinks were so superb we decided to stay for a few more, the bar tender made the restaurant aware we were going to be a little late, there was no fuss or pressure.(we later came back to the bar after dinner where we enjoyed some unique but superb entertainment by a lady on the piano) Dinner at Saltz was relaxed and easy going. we had a selection of nibbles to start then mains. Not one complaint could be made about the food! I highly recommend the bone marrow gravy. All in all our visit to this hotel was one to remember and when my bank balance has recovered I will return. Its true that the drinks and food are not cheap but if you are willing to put that aside for one night you will not regret it!
had a wonderful party last Saturday @ the Dolder. The room as perfect, the service was very efficient, well mannered and always there just perfect! The starters & entree were delicious. The filet was overcooked and the desert a disaster. Over a very nice setting and spart from the filet & desert a good recommendation
This hotel looks like the hotels in the old Hollywood movies: the old building architecture is very Swiss, the new building architecture is very modern and minimalist; it was in the autumn and the trees in the forest around the hotel were all red, yellow and brown. And the beauty of the hotel great collection of mainly modern paintings and sculptures!. The hotel service also was perfect Stunning indeed! Last but not least we had a gastronomic business lunch at the Restaurant : an extraordinary experience! But we had dinner at Saltz: very disappointing and expensive To be highly recommended: a hotel like no other one
