Reception staff very kind, english speaking and available. They help you for touristic guided tour and restaurant. Chinese breakfast (vegetables salted and cooked, sesam pans, cookies) with some continental food. Good Jasmine tea in room. It's possible to buy souvenir in the hotel and take picture with local clothes.

This hotel is located in Beijing's Dongcheng District, in the middle of a traditional Chinese residential neighborhood. The hotel staff is friendly, courteous and most importantly, an English speaker. At the hotel you can eat a large and varied breakfast, which includes Chinese and Western dishes.

The reception staff at this hotel were fantastic! From allowing us to relax, and providing a cup of tea as we checked in - to organising an alternate room for us because of a smoky smell, nothing was too much trouble for them. They really wanted to make our stay a special one, and we really felt well cared for. Jaclyn in particular went above and beyond helping us many times - including booking a concert for us on a chinese website. Such a pleasure to stay and be looked after. The hotel itself is many rooms within the a traditional Chinese Hutong compound. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, with delightful traditional chinese furnishings.

We were in Beijing for a short visit, and booked the Double Happiness because we were looking for a traditional Chinese hotel, and because of all the fabulous reviews. We were not disappointed! The building is absolutely charming with all the tapestries and artwork throughout. Each room is decorated with beautiful, different, vibrant colors and ornate furniture. The beds are on the firm side, but overall the amenities are pretty modern for such a historic-feeling place. We spoke with the manager, Oliver, who told us they are constantly upgrading to keep things looking nice, which speaks to the hotels commitment to providing a quality experience. Breakfast was amazing for such a small hotel - eggs, pastries, fresh fruit, cereal, pot stickers, and a variety of other Chinese food were available for free. We are so much we were barely able to make it out the door for our tour of the Great Wall that the hotel desk was able to secure for us. One tip: We found out taxi drivers will say they cannot drive down the alley, but that's just because they do not want to. If you are not interested in walking the last 800m, make them drive you to the door of the hotel. Otherwise we had a wonderful experience and would definitely stay here again should we come to Beijing.

Stayed one night in this lovely hotel, picked it because of the unique old style structure and the Chinese courtyard. It is not your typical 5 star hotel but if you want to get some taste of the culture, the history, and how the locals live, this is a good place to start. We enjoyed our stay cause that's why we came. We had dinner in a nearby restaurant that the front desk staff recommended and their Peking duck was delicious and half of the price of those cater to tourists ones. In the morning we took a walk around the neighborhood where locals shop for grocery and found one place sells the best roasted sunflower seeds I've ever had. You can stay in a modern hotel anywhere around the world but this kind of places is only possible to find in Beijing

OK, so this isn't the most luxurious, practical or modern hotel in Beijing, but it has to be one of the most interesting. The location, in the hutongs, is great - you get to experience proper, traditional, real Beijing. Rooms are small but beautifully decorated. The courtyards are so quiet and romantic at night. If you want to stay in a western hotel that could be in any city in the world, then Beijing has plenty of options - but if you want a proper Chinese experience then you can't do any better than the Double Happiness.

We stayed for four nights and found the hotel charming and the service outstanding. Staying in the hutongs was a highlight and if you look them up on Trip Advisor there are some great restaurants nearby (highly recommend Nice Rice which is a 5 minute walk away in a nearby hutong, has great food, an English speaking waitress and a picture menu for all customers). The bathroom was fantastic and the rooms furnished in a Chinese fashion. There are couple of shortcomings, otherwise I would give 5 stars, the breakfast is included in the price but is not great, the Western offering in particular (for example the pastries, were not very good) were a bit limited. The Chinese offerings were better but didn't suit me very well although sometimes I do like Chinese breakfast. The other shortcoming wasn't so much that the bed is a bit hard (as I found it fine to sleep on) but that it was a small double bed that was against a wall and it was hard for the person near the wall to get out (there is a wooden rail on the head an foot). Other than that it was a fantastic place to stay in Beijing and reception spoke excellent English and were very very friendly and helpful. It is a 10 minutes walk to the subway but from there you can go anywhere. I would definitely come back if I could find another breakfast option (there is a very popular local bakery nearby and a nearby supermarket so that might solve the breakfast problem for me). Much better than staying in an international hotel (which we did later at other times in our trip) but you just don't get the location, the local character or the outstanding customer service.

Our travel party of 4 adults and 2 kids spent a fantastic 4 nights of our first 11 days in China at the Double Happiness. We could not have been more thrilled with our choice. This hotel is extremely clean. Yes it is older, shows characteristic 'wear', but nothing that comes across in the least bit discouraging or dirty. In fact, the bathroom was the biggest pleasant surprise, with modern faucets, tile and perfectly clean and functional. Our kids loved the courtyard, our travel partners loved everything, and I could not believe the value. Also, ALL beds in China in the boutique hotels, the corporate or the quaint ones like this are hard, no getting around it. The people at the front desk and throughout the hotel were always smiling and happy to help. Their customer service and great english (way better than our Chinese!!) made the experience even cooler than it was at face value. We never had to ask twice for anything and they were always checking to make sure we were happy and that we were headed in the right direction. As for the location, it was so worth it. We came to really enjoy our morning and afternoon strolls down the hutong. Our kids by the last couple days could care a less if they were 200 yards behind us or leading the way, they were totally content with the environment, the people and the experience (9 and 11). Saying hello to the locals, and seeing people live real lives felt like we were in the city and not in a modern hotel environment where we had to check the address remember where we were. Secondly, ALL of China, and this hutong were extremely clean. In all seriousness, it made New York and Rome look like dives. We also felt extremely comfortable at all hours, day or night. Yes, we stayed at a couple 'corporate' places in our 11 days and that was nice. But we loved our 4 nights at the Double Happiness and our trip would not have been the same with their amazing customer service, clean rooms and fantastic location that welcomed us to China.

We spent three nights in this fabulous hotel, tucked away in the Hutong area of Beijing. The rooms are decorated with Chinese fabrics, the beds are set behind curtains and the furniture quirky and well considered. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly - thoroughly reccommend this hotel for something a little bit different to the norm.

If you go to Beijing and want to have a real life experience I couldn’t recommend this place enough. The garden courtyard is an Oasis after the busy city - Fantastic! Bar was surprising good and we even had dinner there one night. Try the Great Wall Red Wine.
