Went into PAIHIA last Friday and stayed at ANOTHER hotel for ONE night. We baled the very next morning and found the Kingsgate. WHAT A DIFFERENCE. A beautiful spot on the bay with all the amenities one will need. We loved it. The meals were incredible and the staff are OUTSTANDING. Nothing was an issue for any of them. Young Deng Deng was so lovely and looked after our interests so well. She is a credit to this hotel and I'm only sorry that we will probably never see her again. Leonardo on the bar was a true gentleman and so obliging and friendly. Seriously cannot speak highly enough of this place or it's staff. THANK YOU KINGSGATE for making our week wonderful after such a poor start at the other "resort at the other end of town. 11/10 . THANK YOU DENG DENG
We booked this hotel the morning of the date we stayed, as soon as we saw it we knew it was going to be a good hotel. Reception staff were polite, and helpful, always a good start. The room was excellent, 2 queen beds, with a lovely bathroom. Very comfortable, clean and good value. Only complaint, only allowing 30 minutes of free wi fi before charging, however a short walk down the road is Rayz bar on the beach with free unlimited wi fi. Overall highly recommended.
Soft, uncomfortable beds. Mould in shower. Rooms not cleaned properly. Greasy plates at breakfast. Undrinkable coffee. And on top of that, they charge for WiFi - something about which even the reception staff are embarrassed but have no discretion over. A pity because the location is good and if senior management had a clue this could be ok. As it is, there are many better places to stay.
We upgraded to a suite, it was reasonably expensive, but well worth it. In effect we had a small apartment, with bedroom, bathroom, and lounge. The best bit was the balcony with fantastic ocean views. You also get an allocated parking space directly under the room/suite. There is no lift, thus with second floor rooms you have to use the stairs, no offer of staff help was given. The hotel is in a great location, and the front facing areas have amazing views. The suites/restaurant area faced the ocean. There is a nice pool, but it's badly located, right alongside the road.. Wi-fi only worked from the back of our room, this took several visits to reception to establish, even thought the fact that wi-fi only works from the more central locations within the hotel must be well know to the staff (but still no solution to this really simple problem, upgrade the router to start with). You have to obtain a special code from reception (free to us, but other guests seem to have been charged $3), but it only lasts 24 hours, then you have to get another – not the best of systems for a modern hotel. The reception staff we came across were polite and well meaning, but totally clueless as to anything to do with the hotel or Piahia itself. At breakfast there was no butter or orange juice. Butter “wasn't available”, but next day some was found. There was no orange juice because of “global warming” Well it's the most original excuse I've ever been given in a hotel, it's also the most ridiculous. After a long protracted debate with the waiter, he went to the hotel bar, which amazingly had orange juice – there you are “global warming solution found in a hotel in the Bay of Islands, New Zealand. The hotel is a real mixed bag, it's in a stunning location in a beautiful part of New Zealand, but the service is average to say the least.
This place doesn’t have much going for it in a town oversupplied with places to stay. The best thing about it is the laundry. The worst is that it charges for WiFi. In between, the rooms are ok but nothing to write home about and the beds are uncomfortable. Frankly I wouldn’t bother, at least until they join the 21st century and offer free WiFi like everybody else.
The Kingsgate Hotel looks out of the water of Paihia. The restaurant has wonderful views of the water . Not all rooms have water views. A lot of the rooms are towards the back . But the restaurant and bar have a water view and look over the swimming pool. Our ground floor room were very clean roomy and tidy . We had a queen bed (very comfortable!) and single bed. Rooms had also jug, bar fridge, iron, ironing board, hair dryer , and. TV. They also had down the corridor a laundry which had a washing machine and a dryer $2 per machine which you exchanged at reception for a token - sachets of laundry powder (free) . Each taking Approx 35-40 mins for a cycle. The buffet breakfast had toast bread, spreads, tin fruit , fresh fruit, yoghurt, eggs, bacon, sausage, hash browns. Tea and coffee. Staff were very friendly and helpful. While the hotel was fully occupied we found it to be quiet . They looked as if they could also book day trips to. Short waking distance to other restaurants in town and the wharf for your boat trip to Russell or Hole in the Rock and Dolphin trips. Would happily stay again!
We booked a Junior Suite although just two of us and weren’t disappointed with the space. The apartment was clean and comfortable. Two minutes walk from Paihia. The only gripe was the charge for wi-fi. Completely unacceptable. We stayed in over twenty establishments in a two month trip to NZ from the UK and this was the only place where we were charged.
We went on a family weekend drive to Paihia from Auckland and spent 2 days & 1 night at the Kingsgate Hotel. We had booked two separate rooms as had two families. Both rooms were really well kept and very tidy. The bathroom was very modern and clean. Being tired from the drive up and traveling with small children we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant for dinner and we were all really happy with our decision when the food arrived. The portion sizes were really decent and three of us got the seafood chowder which was Amazing!!! The staff were really friendly and accommodating. Overall, was a really great place and our only regret was that we didn't stay longer! Thank you Kingsgate Hotel!
The location of the hotel was great since it was close to wharf but the breakfast was very basic and didnt include much items. However I appreciate availability of self service laundry rooms which was quite nice. The hotel provided meagre internet of 30 minutes usage which was really bad.
The location of the motel (I wouldn't call it a hotel) was excellent as it was in a couple of minutes walk to the village centre. The room, on the ground floor, was clean and relatively spacious with a good sized bathroom. We tried the wifi for one night and it was easier and faster to use our mobile phone plans (and at the same price per day). Being on the ground floor but near the restaurant meant that the intense noise of the 11 pm emptying of the bar bottles into the recycling bin was a problem. The pool and gym facilities were better than the average motel, but the bar and restaurant on the 1st floor were a bit stark and lacking character (but it is a motel). The internal decor could do with a touch up here and there, and the lack of a lift could be problematic for an elderly traveller, but overall a reasonable price for a (packed!) tourist village like Paihia.
