We booked this trip through BA holidays as we had stayed here previously. Check in was quick and efficient. We had a personal issue with our apartment I’d booked. We swapped rooms the next day and we settled into our normal relaxing stay. We ate breakfast Sunday morning at the hotel which was a buffet affair. Not a great deal of items available as it was 10am but as it was only 15 US dollars it was worth it. Grounds and rooms were as always impeccably kept. All rooms have had a makeover which was needed. My only complaint was the child-size towels in the bathrooms and the small pillows on the beds. Before we left the sewage issue was in the news and about half a mile away is one of the pumps that is assisting in reducing the issue can be seen. Yes there was a very occasional waft of sewage, I really do mean occasional, maybe 2-3 times a day. Don’t let the rumours make you cancel from this hotel or the area.We will return. My husband and I just returned from staying at Blue Orchids. . We were on a cruise (Wind Star - must do review on that wonderful experience separately) and decided to stay for 3 days before the cruise, 3 days after. The Blue Orchids was our 2nd hotel, Accra was the other one. The Accra was much more up-market, but, to be honest, both hotels have similar negative issues. For the most part, I agree with comments from other residents who stayed recently at Blue Orchids. 1. Do not bother to book any breakfast package there. The breakfasts are fine, in fact, good (!) but the service is very slow . I will say this much: the girl who was serving was usually on her own, and the hotel is under-staffing the restaurant. The poor girl can't wait on 8 tables of people arriving alone !!! She was run off her feet and did apologize. So, I do not blame the server, I blame the hotel management. There is a kitchen ( ours was fine, everything worked)-not modern, but no problem. and a supermarket nearby. I am afraid that would be the best option. On vacation I prefer a lovely breakfast made for me (that is the point of vacations) - but it just is too long a wait - especially if you are booked on a flight or excursion ! Poor management. I must admit that the service for breakfast was even slower at Accra Hotel. !!!! Finally had to go get coffee from a carafe every morning there. The Blue Orchids restaurant is very tired looking. A shame, as it would not be hard to put up some pictures or something. Oh -by the way - in the room there is a section in the brochure saying Room Service. But there is NO room service whatsoever. I had to go ask for ice from the bar. An ice machine was there but not working. 2. Happy Hour has under-sized drinks, tiny glasses of wine. So, what is the point ? 3. Our bed / mattress was very soft / or very old....but the room was clean and linens were fine. 4. Reception is chilly. Not one smile ever and it might be nice if they say something pleasant to you like "Welcome to Blue Orchids" . Good grief. Do they want you to come back ? Apparently not. Never an explanation of beach towel system or any amenities. The room key is handed to you and you basically have to ask where your room is located. 5. We had a room very near the pool, and it looked out over the rocky part of the beach. Half the beach is sand, the other half is near rocks. If you are a light sleeper, the wave noise could be an issue, as it is a "pounding surf" as it hits the rocks. I take earplugs, so was not bothered. 6. Patio door was very wonky and you had to pull on it hard to get it to lock. But, it did lock, so, there. 7. Location of the hotel if pretty good. Pretty grounds well kept up. We discussed whether we would stay there again - and decided "probably not." It's a shame, as all of these negative issues would be easy to rectify.
Yet again fantastic time in Barbados . Hotel fab as usual staff great . This is a fantastic place to stay in Barbados . We couldn’t ask for better , the location is perfect , supermarket just around the corner . This really is a little gem to find . Price perfect , you can catch the bus outside the door to anywhere on the island . Fab beach , Also within a few steps accra beach ,the board walk running all the way to the Hilton if you like a nice walk in the mornings or evenings . The only problem we have ever had is with virgin holidays , when you book make sure if you book studio room and have a child with you that they have a extra bed in place for your arrival , twice now we have had the same problem . And they are very quick at blaming the hotel which is NOT there fault . In which they always seem to blame . Really this is such a fantastic hotel with great pool , beach , staff . Just a shame virgin holidays can not sort this issue out . We will never take any more holidays with them . Book direct if need be as this really is one of the best hotels for relaxing and area to be in . Keep up the good work Gent family
The hotel is well located and a very relaxing place Our room was in D block and had a kitchenette, and was clean and comfortable The staff are friendly without being pushy which we found ideal We also used the airport transfer service the driver was friendly, helpful and punctual and the cost we were quoted by the hotel was 30 Barbados dollars per couple per journey and that’s what we paid The minibus is big, it’s clean and is air conditioned. Hard to fault anything to do with this hotel as we had a great stay
Before booking this Hotel I emailed to ask which room we need to book to have a separate shower, I was told a Luxury Ocean Front Studio. We booked. I emailed three days before arrival to make sure we had a shower cubicle - a bath was not necessary, as I am unable to access a bath. On arrival we were taken to a two bedroom apartment - the shower was over the bath! I returned to reception and asked if there was the room I booked available. After a whispered conversation with someone(?) the answer was no - I had been given a big room. I think I was supposed to be grateful! Unfortunately, I couldn`t shower in a "big room". No apology. As it was for only two days I "managed" I made no fuss, just said I was disappointed. Next day - reception again, Could we have some towels for the pool? No conversation just two towels handed over. I don`t think I have ever encountered such sullen reception staff. The only personnel we engaged in who was pleasant was the gentleman who was the concierge. This was a shame as this was quite a nice Hotel, in a good location. Champers is only two doors away. The rooms could do with an overhaul, but were clean and the beds were comfortable. Smiling obviously cost extra!!
The room was in spitting distance of the pool and the beach. Close to the local supermarket for all of the necessary supplies to bring back to the functional kitchen. We soon realised that the local rum was much more financially viable than overseas wine! Sea was really warm and there were only a few days when the waves were a little daunting but then the pool was a safe option. The hotel shares amenities with the Coral Mist which has a small restaurant and bar and another pool. There were arranged activities but I was happy just to relax and read in the sun.
This is a great hotel that offers well maintained rooms, good pool with sun chairs and right next to a great beach. The room are spacious and recently painted. The balconies are spacious and offer nice views of the sea and the garden/pool area. The adjacent beach is one of the best in southern Barbados. Nice sand and shallow waters make is very easy for a swim any time of the day. There are good restaurants within walking distance and Oistens is just a 10 min bus ride away. Two good size supermarkets are within 5 minutes walk. Great place to just chill and relax during the day and go out to restuarants at night. Highly recommend the hotel for a restful and relaxing holiday.
Cons By noisy road Beds uncomfortable, too soft, cheap Doors banging early in the morning Overcharged for room service Customer service not great Pros Gr8 view Right by gr8 beach Chilled Nice size room Other Mainly an older crowd
Love this place. It is the perfect combination of beach and relaxation and it's just a stone's throw away from the commercial strip. There's an onsite restaurant that serves decent food. The entire staff was very attentive. The grounds are very well kept and laid out so if you want to gaze out at the ocean or read peacefully you can. Great place!
We have stayed at Blue Orchids several times in the past few years, and have come to know the hotel & its staff very well. The receptionists are unfailingly kind and helpful at all times, and the grounds crews are always friendly and pleasant. This year, knowing that I am quite disabled, they actually built me a ramp so I could drive my scooter onto our porch. The grounds of the property are lovely and the pool is easily accessable. The restaurant is greatly improved over previous visits. If we are able we will definitely return. R. G. Donnelly. Dundas,ON,Canada
