Had a lovely week at this lovely, clean, friendly hotel. Nothing was too much trouble only grip was about little ones food, really could have been more variety, they are such fickle eaters, luckily ours would eat fruit and always room for cake!! Even if you could pick in advance to avoid waste it would help.
We stayed as a family of four (children aged 11&8) during the October half term and found the hotel and Alvor itself to be lovely. The pool is huge and this allows for plenty of sunbeds - we never failed to get four together - no matter what time of day we arrived at pool side. The food is good. Plenty of choice and nothing to complain about. The all inclusive drink selection is what you would expect at a foreign hotel. I'm sure those complaining about plastic cups would be the first to whinge when they hurt themselves when slipping on broken glass by the pool side!! Overall, this is a very good hotel set in a really pleasant part of the Algarve. I wouldn't pay any more than we did - I'm aware the price nearly doubled around a week after we booked - but for us it represented really good value for money. Would definitely go back.
Stayed early October for 1 week. Booked package with Voyage Prive for a very good price which included flights, hold luggage and Gold wristbands which gave us a discount on the pay for bar and in the spa. Arranged private transfer with Yellow Fish transfers who were excellent. Voyage Prive work on a voucher system as opposed to a traditional tour operator therefore we had to check in directly with the airline and presented the accommodation voucher at the hotel reception. We had no issues with this. The hotel is very big and has 4 floors, a bank of 4 elevators at one end so can be a bit of a walk to and fro, we had a front facing room over the carpark and to the mountains, although not the most glamorous view, we came to appreciate the peace and quiet as opposed to the constant noise/music etc that would have come with a pool facing room. The two restaurants, indoor all inc bar and snack bar are all one floor below ground level which means eating outside isn't much of a view and the area allowed as such is not very big. The spa and games room is another floor below that. The room was spacious, and yes a little worn on the settee and sideboards/tables. I have no idea why there is a two ring cooker and a metal pot for boiling water, there are no other cooking accoutrements so surely they'd have been as well to just provide a kettle? small teacups, dessert spoons, no plates, bowls, knives or forks and 2 mismatched and rather small glasses. Not that we needed it but it just seemed a bit odd. Due to reading other reviews about the "Tea making facilities" we took our travel kettle. I would have preferred a mirror on the wall in the bedroom over the table as opposed to a bed, the amount of times I tried to check my hair in the TV!! Rooms kept very clean and you're provided with plenty of towels and a few small bottles of shower gel and small bars of soap. I think it's a bit rich to want to charge you for a safe for 4 star all inc, and to only supply you with 1 bottle of water, little things like this do let it down and are why people complain. Last bad bit was some of the younger bar staff, were sullen and almost rude as compared to some others who were wonderfully friendly. Pool as everyone knows is massive! OH loved it. Sunbeds were a bit hit and miss as to whether you could get one later in the day but it wasn't that big of a deal to us. get your towel out and lie on the grass! Music around the pool all day and the animation team at intervals, we didn't get involved, not really our thing. Food in Blue restaurant was excellent at every meal, we never saw the same main dish twice (except at breakfast of course) plenty of choice and particularly good fish dishes. After reading reviews OH was looking forward to the BBQ nights but there wasn't one on our whole 7 night stay. As mentioned there's a regular bus to the beach, can recommend the beach restaurant right by where they drop you off, had a great Portuguese steak sandwich & fries there. The reason people are so specific about the bus being to the beach and not the town is because there is quite a difference. You can walk to the town in a little over 10 minutes, the beach is not so straight forward and you can easily get lost, although you'll find it in the end! Overall we had a pleasant holiday and felt that our money was well spent at the Alvor Baia. Would we return? Not in a rush but for the right price yes but this is not a reflection on the hotel more a reflection on Alvor town and beach, of which there is nothing particularly wrong, we just found it hard getting our heads around the lay out of it all, we much preferred Albufiera old town and the beaches there.
The only thing I would advise is to remember that you cannot check into your room until after 4pm. I did not realise this so was a little in prepared but we were allowed to use all facilities..The room was really lovely there was a microwave and fridge really spacious room. We used the adult only restaurant but there were children allowed in as it was a quieter time of year. Food was very nice always a good choice. Soups were lovely and I really enjoyed the deserts which is something I normally don't bother with. Entertainment was good. lots of sunbeds available. Really loved our holiday also nice to have a hairdryer in the bathroom.
Huge hotel can be a long walk to rooms depending on location plenty of working lifts Great size pool Plenty of sun beds Children's park area Children's kids club Entertainment good for kids could improve by adding more for adults Rooms good size Bathroom bath shower hairdryer Bedroom with tv Living area sofa table chairs Hob fridge microwave Could improve adding iron ironing board Could improve adding kettle pans crockery utensils none of these provided so can't use facilities Only cups saucers glasses provided Pool bar you tend to queue could improve by making larger size or putting more staff on duty or providing self serve soft drinks Snack times included good variety of snacks Food good fresh salads fruit cakes meat seafood fish a bit repeatative can improve adding more dishes Two restaurants to choose from both serve the same food Water machines available to fill water bottles up Shop on site small sells papers cigarettes gifts sun lotion Wi fi good accessible throughout hotel free Pool view was a sun trap on balcony I would recommend using the safe as we never used thisand money went missing from my bag which had been placed in a wallet and had only been left in the room Staff were quick to investigate but nothing could be proven hense to my loss Would be better if they had a luggage room rather than leaving cases in voyer whilst waiting for rooms Courtesy bus to and from beach several times a day Good location 15 minute walk into town some lovely restaurants and bars the local bars are worth a visit as the Portuguese people welcome people from all counties We would stay again
I was due to fly to Turkey but unfortunately but unfortunately my holiday company went bust so Thompson s found a similar package to what we had booked. The hotel is just under 1 hours drive from the airport. The hotel proved to be very popular with the bus dropping off 28 people at the hotel. On arrival we had our luggage put in a safe holding area whilst we checked in and waited for our rooms to be ready. Whilst waiting we could make use of the hotels facilities either using the pool or have a drink or use the snack bar where a late breakfast was available. Our room was ready within the hour and we were not to be disappointed. A very clean spacious apartment and a large balcony. A very nice kitchen with a microwave but strangely no kettle. The beds very comfortable with extra blankets in the cupboard if required. The food was a bit repetitive but very nice the salads and the cheese selection with onions and crackers and a glass of wine just what the doctor ordered. The house wine was very drinkable ( so I did) and also the lager was not too bad. The pool bar very good with no waiter service having to queue up to get a drink but you always got served quick.i have seen a lot of moans about plastic cups used for the drinks , two points first I took my own beer tankard ( none glass) which the bar staff were happy to fill up. Second point I would much rather drink from a plastic container than cut my foot from broken glass. There is a payable bar where you can purchase a few extra drinks such as magnem s cider and the bar stays open till midnight. Only a 15 minute walk and your in the village of Alvor.where there are plenty of Irish bars and a large choice of restaurants. I would like to say the staff all worked very hard and quite honest do not get the recognition they deserve. The entertainment team thought up some good games around the pool side throughout the day. Would I go back? We have booked up to go back next year already with a bit of tweeting this could become an excellent hotel.
We stayed in this hotel for 11 nights and could not fault it. We have 2 small children aged 2 and 4. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel was spotless as was our room. Towels etc changed daily. The rooms and balconies are huge and the little kitchenette was extremely useful with the 2 girls. We were able to put the girls to bed in the evening and sit in the lounge with a glass of wine and watch a movie. The food was good with a good variety. Don't expect fine dining. They have to cater for the masses and they do it very well! It was probably alot quieter than mid summer so I would imagine they are under less stress but for the time we were there I couldn't fault anything. I would highly recommend it for a family holiday. Also kids pool, play area and kids club are excellent too.
It would be correct to say that we hated this hotel, from the moment we stepped in. You cannot check in before 4pm, they line up your suitcases unsecured in reception. No baggage room, they just just them up with your room numbers on. Luckily we asked at about 12 and the rooms were ready but they would leave you till 4 if you didn't ask. Upon walking to the rooms, the carpets on the way to rooms 068 and 066 were disgusting. Stained, covered in crap not seen a hoover or a carpet cleaner in years. The room, smelt smokey on entrance and it was clear they let customers smoke in or around them. The floor was dusty, with carpet mats either side of the bed that were dirty so we kicked them under the bed. All around the edges of the room were dusty, i removed the winter blankets from the wardrobe and pubes and all sorts fell out. The walls are covered in dead bugs, squashed everything everywhere - cleaners but not see this.....The bathrooms was not too bad but we saw the cleaner use a old towel from the floor wipe the toilet over with is then wipe other areas with the same towel. I also wrote something in the dust on top of the hairdryer unit, that after 2 days it was gone - not because it had been washed off because the dust had covered it. When my mother approached the 'Director' about the poor cleaning he asked if she wanted a job. The rooms have a hob and a sink, but not facilities to cook or dry anything up - it makes no sense The pool is nice, plenty of sun beds but the pool security guards removed the ones we were sitting on for the 1st 3 days as they seemed to decide they didn't want people sitting in that area any more and were closing the hotel down. These security guards dress as life guards and have the words Vigilante on their backs. Their jobs, are to 1) sit in a chair looking at their phones. 2) patrol the pool area, ensuring that no guests are stepping out of line - i.e eating at their sun bed or drinking out of anything other than a plastic cup or carrying more than 2 drinks. One day they caught a couple trying to carry burgers to their sun beds - within seconds they were surrounded. 3) As soon as you get up from a sunbed they move it back to where it should be with the back down. Not sure why they dress as life guards as this wasn't on the list. The pool bar, isn't a pool bar its a shed, a shed that has limited drinks in and everything is in plastic just in case you drop something. You are not allowed to carry more than 2 drinks in case you drop one. They wouldn't want their pool area to get dirty - but their internal carpets are fine. The food, the quality was ok but the areas are too small and there are not enough tables. We were a family of 5, but we were not permitted to sit in the children's area because the tables were set up for families of 4. When we tried to move a table, we were aggressively approached by the person who seats you, he grabbed the table and should that he was in charge and we cannot sit there. I immediatly complained to the rep as i was extremely angry and upset, whom upon me confirming that my son was autistic and wanted to site in that area for the monkeys on the walls all of a sudden a table for 5 was made up every night. Whilst complaining to the reps on that particular evening the apparent restaurant manager who failed to introduce himself approached me in a similar aggressive nature that could of easily escalated my complaint. FYI the children's buffet that Thomson advertise was not open and hardly is, so don't rely on this for children. If you are luckily yet may have pizza out on the main buffet Evening entertainment was awful, the downstairs area was a horrible place to be - half greenhouse with a stage area squeezed in and half a dirty looking cafe - no-one should spend their holiday sitting down there unless its overhauled. The bar in this area was very busy of an evening - the staff were very rude and often were very unhappy about you asking for a drink to be in a glass opposed to a plastic cup. Upstairs was the grande cafe, this is a pay bar. This is where the hotel manager likes to sit an entertain his high rolling customers. He likes to showcase his nice cafe to 'paying guests' whilst any all inclusive customers are forced outside to the shed pool bar for a plastic cup and limited options. When approached the director said 'why should paying customers queue up' as if any customers booked with Thomson are on a freebie - not sure about other All inc customers but i certainly paid to go there and pre paid for all of my drinks - we were on no freebie and were paying customers. It started to feel like all inc cattle were led out to the sheds, whilst the director milked the other cattle at the paid for bar - with the posh glasses and our cheap plastic cups. There was a singer in the grand cafe most nights but this could be any time. When it comes to all inclusive drinks, this is the most basic we have ever had. No menu, the staff wouldn't tell you what they had. You couldn't have any cocktails but you could order one if you split it up we worked out, so can i have a vodka, peach snaps orange and grenadine in a glass - boom a cocktail. We resorted to going to the Avlor in the evenings as the staff nor the surroundings made you feel at all welcome. You'd just walk pack past the hotel director at his paid for bar like a cheap vegas casino owner and his high rollers. Alvor is fantastic, this is my 7th time and the 1st and only time i'd book a hotel here. There are plenty of bookable apartments around, where you would be much better off than staying here as the food in Alvor town is amazing.
First of all it's not near the beach but the pool/garden area is great. We did an all inclusive, our first and the food and drink offered was very good. The rooms are very modern, split into 2 sections with a TV in each room. Bonus. They offer a free bus service multiple times per day to the beach which is about a mile away. Entertainment all day long and shows at night. Also a kids club. First time we have hardly spent anything. Recommended. The rooms were very good, and cleaned every day.
We decided to get away for a wk to an all inclusive hotel and came across this one . Hotel is massive and it has the biggest pool I've ever come across - nightly entertainment good and always a good selection of fish daily on menu and also the usual pizzas etc . We drank the local beers & wine - room was fantastic - spotless and really big - great balcony too - time of year we went there was no problem getting drinks at bar or getting sun beds - staff really friendly and helpful - defo recommend this hotel and it's only 13 mins walk into alvor itself - slight incline on way back from the village but nothing too hard - alvor itself is a beautiful little fishing village with a large number of fab restaurants - the choice is endless
