One of America’s truly inspirational women, Helen Keller, went on to become a famous author, political activist, and campaigner, despite her disabilities. Her home in Tuscumbia is preserved as a memorial to her life and work.
1.Gulf Shores – This pretty coastal city sits on the Gulf Coast and is blessed with stunning white beaches and a fabulous natural ecosystem that attracts tourists all year round. It’s popular for water sports lovers, with everything from boogie boarding to sailing, water skiing and diving on offer.
2.Orange Beach – Alabama’s top beach spot is great for beach lovers. It sits on the Alabama Gulf Coast and is almost the twin of Gulf Shores, offering visitors the same chilled-out vibe. There are plenty of Alabama hotels next to the white-powered sands, and dozens of great restaurants, shops, and boutiques to explore.
3.Athens – if you want a family vacation with some proper southern hospitality then head to Athens during July for the Kiddie Carnival. While you’re here you can also visit the Veterans Museum and Archives or use this historic town as your base to explore the region.
4.Florence – This pretty city is home to several excellent museums, including the Florence Indian Mound & Museum, and the Children’s Museum of the Shoals, which documents the history of the Shoal people.
5.Birmingham – Alabama’s largest city is packed with plenty to see and do. It’s great for sports lovers, with the Sports Hall of Fame on Richard Arrington Jr Blvd. The ‘Magic City’ is also set to host the 2021 World Games.
6.Dauphin Island – this tiny barrier island sits in the Gulf of Mexico off Mobile Bay and is home to Fort Gaines, historical sites, and some amazing seafood restaurants. There’s evidence of human habitation dating back an incredible 1500 years.
7.Madison – A quiet and sleepy little town, Madison sits on the northern border of Alabama and is historically one of the most important locations in the state. Take a tour of the key sites of the Madison battle during the Civil War or find out more about the history of the indigenous Koasati people.
Sunny, warm and with an average annual temperature of around 64°F, Alabama is a great spot for a vacation all year round. You may encounter cooler temperatures to the north, and the state park around the Appalachian Mountains sees plenty of snow during the winter. Summers can be very hot with temperatures of up to 90°F, so the shoulder seasons of spring and fall are often better times to visit for cooler temperatures and lower humidity.
The best way to see Alabama is by car. Car rentals are available at all major points, such as airports. There are six major interstate roads, with the I-65 running north to south and the I-10 east to west. The port of Mobile is a popular cruise stopping point, while airports serve Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, and Huntsville.

The staff could not have been nicer. The ONLY negative thing I could say is that there is no restaurant on site so room service is not an option.
