The quiet city of Prince Rupert is located on Kaien Island in the western region of British Columbia, Canada. The city is separated from Digby Island and Metlakatla by the Port Hardy passageway, and there are ferryboats that offer easy transportation to the surrounding areas. Many travelers come to Prince Rupert for outdoor activities such as sport fishing, hiking and boating. There is also a lot of history in the city that can be found at locations including First Nations, the Museum of Northern BC and the North Pacific Cannery.
The North Pacific Cannery is a National Historic Site that has been around since the 19th century, and it s one of the only remaining salmon canneries on the West Coast. The Museum of Northern BC is dedicated to the Native American history of the area, and it is filled with archeological artifacts. Visitors will learn about the fur trade of the Northwest as well as the booming fishing industry from the 1800s. At the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, there are roughly 50 grizzlies being protected. Off the coast of Prince Rupert, you ll often be able to see humpback and gray whales as well as orcas.
When you fly to Prince Rupert Airport (YPR), you ll be landing on Digby Island west of the city. From the airport, you can take a quick boat ride to the city. Prince Rupert is somewhat cold throughout the year with summer highs only reaching 55 degrees, but the city usually stays above freezing temperatures during the winter.
