Fly to Macau International Airport
As a former Portuguese colony, Macau offers an eclectic mix of Mediterranean and traditional Chinese. Located at the mouth of the Pearl River, Macau's historical diversity is apparent in the ornate architecture of the Ruins of the St. Paul Church, and the massive scale of the Grand Lisboa Casino.
Macau has been called the "Las Vegas of the East" because it's the only locale in China where gambling is legal. Most casino resorts are located near Nam Van Lake.
If you want to get away from all the glitz, then you can make a short trek to Taipa Village on the island of Taipa. Here, you'll find some traditional Chinese culture still intact, with a variety of Chinese temples. On the mainland, you'll find other cultural points of interest like the Macau Museum of Art, the Guia Fort and Chapel, and the Macau Museum of Sacred Art and Crypt.
Getting around
When you fly to Macau International Airport (MFM) you'll arrive about six miles south of the city center. Car rental services are available within the airport, or you could opt to travel by bus to the city center.
Hints and tips
If you're planning on going casino hopping, then you'll probably want to stay downtown. Buses and minibuses are abundant and cheap, and you can even rent bicycles in Taipa to explore the island.
