International flights to Jamaica often land in Montego Bay, but Kingston and Ocho Rios also have international airports. The Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay is the busiest airport in the Caribbean and is the Caribbean hub for many airlines, serving major cities in Europe and North America. Served by American Airlines, British Airways, Delta, Air Berlin, among others, some routes Jamaica flights to Sangster are only available seasonally, but flights from other cities are available year-round. The Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston is the second major airport, and among the 130 international flights that depart weekly, Jamaica flights arrive regularly from Miami, London-Gatwick, Fort Lauderdale, and New York. American Airlines, British Airways, and Jet Blue serve this airport.
Jamaica Weather
Expect hot and humid weather when you step off your Jamaica flights. Higher inland regions may be more temperate, but are situated in the path of the Atlantic hurricanes, so rain can be common during the summer months. Some regions on the south coast of the island stay relatively dry, but most areas experience showers regularly. If you plan outdoor activities, consider traveling between December and April, when temperatures are cooler. Whenever you go, pack a light jacket in case you travel inland, where it gets cooler.
Getting Around Jamaica
Once you arrive, getting around Jamaica can be an adventure in itself! While you can rent your own car, local drivers are not known for caution, and roads are not known for being maintained! Rental cars are also more subject to break-ins and thefts, so you may be better off taking local transport or walking. Local buses, however, are cheap and save you the trouble of haggling over the price on a taxi. Often, resorts will offer tours by bus, sometimes including guided tours in the excursion package. Be alert when riding local buses, because pickpockets are rampant.
Jamaica Attractions
When you have arrived in Jamaica, be prepared for a laid-back, relaxed holiday. For the most part, people are friendly and hospitable, and enjoy showing their island to visitors. Some of the main attractions include:
- Nine Mile, Bob Marley's birth and burial place, as well as artifacts of his life and career.
- Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, 600 feet of cascading falls, with trails to climb from the beach and plunge pools along the way.
- Mystic Mountain in Ochos Rios, bobsledding rides, waterslides, zip lines, and an aerial tram to get you into the rainforest canopy.
- Cousin's Cove in Negril, gorgeous picnic spot with a pristine, secluded cove and colorful history.
- Greenwood Great House in Montego Bay, one of the best kept great houses on the island, over 200 years old.
