Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan5.0 out of 5.0

Close to the metro station--hongkong road station. Shangri-La is always one of the best 5 stars hotel in a city. The service and the food is perfect, the style is classic. There is a small beautiful garden in the hotel, just outside of the lobby lounge.
The Shangri-La has a great location with the opening of 2 and soon to be a 3rd subway line less than 100 meters away. Taxi to/from airport is now only about 30 minutes since the new expressway was completed. So, location and transportation are not what make the Shangri-La great. It is the people, from the doorman to the GM and everyone in between. You will be assisted with all your needs, there are many bi-multi lingual people to help you.
Hotel is abit old, but Room is comfortable and spacious. Staff are helpful and friendly. Only there for a night, love the Japanese breakfast for room service. Love toiletries. But Smoking in the lobby is a major turnoff.
Stayed at the Shangri-La Wuhan for a couple of nights on a business trip. Decided to upgrade to the Horizon Club to take advantage of the lounge since the flight arrived in the afternoon. The Shangri-La Wuhan is an older property but as befitting the chain, everything was kept in excellent condition with ever helpful and friendly staff. Rooms were comfortable and very decent size. Looks like some refurbishment had been done as the room I had included power outlets with USB options. Definitely a plus these days. Wifi, is free and available throughout the property. The gym is in the basement, not my favorite location as it means one cannot look outside. But equipment were in decent shape and really nothing to complain about. I had breakfast at the lounge and not the main cafe. Less variety but not of lower quality but definitely in a quieter setting. The evening cocktails came with enough food to allow one to skip dinner if so desired. There is a subway entrance across the street and easily brings you to the various shopping pedestrian streets around the city. To sum up, despite the apparent age and basement gym, the property has been maintained well and lives up to The Shangri-La name.
It is a rather old hotel, but, very well maintained. Had a slight problem at the 20th Club floor check in, but, it was resolved after the newly trained person made a few phone calls. Then came another tiny problem, when I made my reservations, way in advance, I requested that the mini bar be cleared, well, when I entered the room, I had to call housekeeping to clear the bar. Other than that, it was a nice stay. Room 2043 is a corner room and away from the lifts. It faces a small lake, but, the view is not great. There was a distinct smell of fresh paint and housekeeping was quick to mend this problem. The club lounge was nice, quiet, peaceful place to have breakfast. Unlike the Cafe Wu, where it was more of a fish market than a cafe. We spent half a morning there and then decided it was best for our sanity to have breakfast at the 20th floor. Although the selection of eats are more in the Cafe. We wanted to have drinks at the Lobby Lounge but, decided not to as it was full of smokers. In the hotel website, it states that the lounge does not allow smoking, and, on the tables there are non smoking signs, but, being China, I guess, the locals do not understand the meaning of no smoking. Typical of the people. The Shang Palace was a nice place for lunch and dinner. Service good, food is ok, and cheap. we had the lunch Dim Sum (only on Fris, Sats and Suns) . Nice, and so we decided to try the dinner menu. Not bad, my wife agreed. Location is very near subway line 3, about a short walk. Xiangkang station connects to almost all of Wuhan, so, very nice location. Footnote: The nearest Starbucks is a good 15 minutes walk.
There were too many people compliment about their hotel and service. So I will not go in details on that. The hotel is great as well as the service. But what moves me is not only their service, but their kind understanding. Shout out and kudos to Ms Julie and Ms Margaret which you can find them both at the restaurant area. Ms Julie is extremely attentive towards my request on "borrowing" their freezer to freeze my breastmilk while Ms Margaret actually spend her 15 minutes to help me wrap up my breastmilk to check in during my flight. Among other hotels that I stayed in Wuhan city, Shangri-La is the ONLY hotel that provide service for me to freeze my breastmilk. Wonder why I can't store it in the fridge in my hotel room? Its because the temperature is warmer than our regular fridge at our home. Hence a freezer is needed or multiple refill of ice and salt needed. No doubt on this hotel and its stars rating because the service speaks for itself. The room is not as spacious as other hotels I stayed in(thou all are economical range), the toiletries range were not many compared to others etc. BUT you can't doubt their top notch service from the moment you reach their door step. Not exaggerating but their bellboy service is great. I have way too many luggage, approx 8-9 pieces and I desperately needed a luggage cart where I can push it straight to my room. The bellboy told me all the cart and will look one for me a.s.a.p. Well guess what? He came with one after 3 minutes of waiting outside. He helped me load and unload them with ease without me worrying anything at all. Thank you so much Shangri-La team. The reason my review deserves a 5 stars for them because no matter how much flaws one hotel have, Shangri-La did their best to help their customers not because customers are always right but they strive to improve their hotels daily. I enjoyed their service because even 1 piece of luggage bag, they will still approach you to help you eventhough they know you're capable to handle it yourself. Did I mention that their food range in the restaurant were great? I go ga-ga over it. Not that it is best and the tastiest but they have way too many food to try on. I love their porridge the most as its really, delicious. And their cakes/buns for sell? They taste delicious too. Nope, the price is certainly worth and I would say, cheaper compared to the ones sold in my own country's bakery shop.
This is a wonderful hotel. I was made to feel welcome from the moment I arrived until the moment I left. Staff could not have been kinder or more attentive. The rooms are beautiful with sophisticated lighting, a large screen TV, excellent desk space for working and the bathrooms are excellent. The food here is of a very high standard and the lobby area is more than inviting.
I went for business to Wuhan and counted myself lucky to have gotten a very good rate for the Shangri-La. It quickly became clear that this facility is a more localized B version of the normally quite plush and high quality hotel chain. Rooms are nice but seem to miss the lovely touches (stationary, good quality toiletries, nicely stocked mini bar) of other Shangri-Las I stayed at. Breakfast is catering to local taste. My impression got solidified when during check-out a group of guest started arguing in the lobby, which ended in a scuffle. A scene I might expect at the local train station but not in the usually serene lobby area of a classy 5 star hotel.
The hotel is what may expect of Shangri La. Reasonably good location. However Wuhan is building their Subway system and that always causes little disturbance. We took a regular room and received an upgrade to executive floor for a very reasonable fee. Very convenient for breakfast, afternoon tea, happy hour or just to sit quietly and read a paper.
The bed was comfortable enough for a business traveller who just arrived from a 2 hours car ride from Huangshi. The Chinese restaurant "Shang Palace" at the ground floor level also served decent Wuhan delicacies. Surrounding the hotel lies a park, as well as many delicious Wuhan food to try out. We went there for breakfast since breakfast at the hotel was not complimentary.
