Mattress on double bed was worn out and uncomfortable. The sash windows were drafty with no secondary double glazing to cut down on street noise and were dirty with flaking paint and in need of repair or replacement. Poor signage to the hotel outside in order to differentiate between the restaurant next door. It was sad that someone was rough sleeping directly outside the entrance to the hotel.

This property is under major refurbishment. It is situated perfectly for staying in Windsor close to the castle shops etc. The staff were lovely and did all they could as there is obviously work man onsite even on Sundays and no restaurant options or facilities other than your room but a two minute walk to great restaurants and Wetherspoons breakfast for cheap and cheerful option nearby!! Can’t wait to revisit once the refurbishment is complete. We paid a good price for the area and had a great weekend as everything was close at hand. Consider it if you are paying a good price as it is so convenient to explore from. I am sure once it’s refurbished it will be back up to steep prices !

This in its day would have been a beautiful hotel with stunning views. Booked this because of location and booked a “deluxe” room to relax and see the castle views advertised. In reality the room was dirty, stains on walls, shower inadequate, we were not warned about scaffolding being right outside our room so when we got there at 3pm on a sunny day , curtains closed , we opened them to find men working and could see in. I spoke with reception saying that we could not relax in the room so would go out and asked regarding the following morning and were assured as it was Sunday no workmen would be there. Opened curtains thinking we could look at the views in the morning through the scaffolding to find several men within touching distance outside our windows. Things the hotel could not help was the noise outside until after 3am but considering we showed that we were not happy with the room and lied to about workmen on the Sunday it would have been helpful to offer us another room at a reduced rate to at least avoid the noise outside and banging from workmen. This hotel should be withdrawn from sale or at least an errata with the warning of work being carried out.

Probably the best value hotel room I’ve stayed in. Yes, the hotel is old, dated and in urgent need of some repair. BUT for £60 for a large room, castle view and walkable distance to all of the tourist attractions, it’s a good deal. Not sure what the deal was with the little homemade sandwiches in the foyer though….? Btw, I’m actually a local resident and was staying here for one night while I was exchanging/completing on my property. Served its purpose well.

A well-established Windsor hotel undergoing extensive renovation. Good specious room with a roll top bath Our luxury room although recently decorated still showed signs of lack of final inspection. Bathroom door hinges were loose, loose toilet seat, exposed wiring next to the wardrobe, water stains on the ceiling and general paint splatter. Dressing gowns or slippers would have been a nice touch

Would stay again but please clean the windows!

The executive double room was massive and decent value for money for Windsor. A few other reviewers have mentioned cleanliness, it’s not awful but just little things that you’d think would be part of the cleaners check list. Our room had a large amount of mould on the window sil which would only take a minute to clean off. Other than that the room was nice Some parts of the hotel would benefit from a little makeover but it’s generally a solid 4/5, especially for a the money. I’d definitely come back again. Looks like they’re doing renovations so they’re probably going to improve it Right opposite the castle and close to bars and restaurants

Older hotel under renovation, across from castle. We stayed one night. Booked luxury room and it was a very basic room with uncomfortable bed and no hot water... Great location and beautiful restaurant downstairs but I would not stay at the hotel again.

Would recommend

I read a lot of poor reviews of this place but was pleasantly surprised. The check in was easy, location ideal for central town, and the room was clean and tidy with everything I needed. Obly downside was my room had no radiators, but had one electric heater. The room was a tad cold but I didn't spend long in the room. Overall a good quick stay and no issues.

A pleasant stay

It was a pleasant stay. There were scaffolding for renovation around the hotel at the time of the stay so a cheaper price. Very clean and modern, the heating rack in the bathroom was on, although the heater beside the bed was not working. I presume was because it was against the bed and the curtains. Other than this, everything else was good.

Avoid this hotel. Don’t be tempted by the low rate. Really. This was genuinely the worst night away we have had for many years. 30 years ago, I remember The Harte and Garter Hotel as a smart, up-market establishment. Not any longer. The fabric and decor of the building is in a shocking state of disrepair. Peeling paint, swollen and cracked woodwork, ragged and worn carpets, DIY bodge jobs wherever you look. The fire alarm outside our room was missing its inner workings, despite retaining its signage and instructions. The radiator in our room was not working and the room cold - instead, we were supplied with a cheap electric space heater. The advertised “double-bed” was hilariously narrow and the mattress so old, worn and without support that we hardly slept… and checked out early. Sadly, today’s Harte and Garter is an utter disgrace. If the management had any integrity they would close immediately and not open until the building was renovated from top to bottom by honest crafts-people. Dr Paul Matts
