Econo Lodge Whiteville2.0 out of 5.0

The hotel was pretty clean. The only thing I noticed was a slight musty smell and a few stray hairs in the bathroom. The plugs kept falling out of the outlets next to the bed. Luckily, the ones in the bathroom worked fine and there was nifty little charging station attached to one of the nightstand. I didn't spend much time there, really only to sleep and shower. The bed was pretty comfortable, but there was a lot of noise coming from outside and other rooms. It is not in the best area either, so best to deadbolt and chain at night.
The Econo Lodge in Whiteville is one of a very few lodging choices. This hotel is clean with a friendly staff and very pet friendly. As a matter of fact, it is the only pet friendly hotel in Whiteville North Carolina. Many people think a pet friendly hotel is uncapped but that is far from what the Econo Lodge proved to be.
We stayed two nights here on business. There are only 2 hotels in Whiteville which is part of the problem. We asked for a quiet room. First night two families were put within two rooms of ours who had children & staying for a week. Not even remotely quiet. Problems with the room, the worst was the mold growing on the bottom door jam inside the bathroom. I have a picture of it. The sink when turned on sounds like a heavy duty blender. When I mentioned it I was told all the rooms are like that by a staff person. The 2nd worse problem is that the WIFI service after 9:00 P.M. is useless. It was like a bad dial-up service from the 1990's or didn't work at all. Front desk told me she would reboot which did nothing & gave me excuses. The thing is we stayed there several years ago and had the same problem. Could it be when the library closes next door the availability is nonexistent? The furniture is dated & not comfortable. It is 2 stories but no elevator. They advertise breakfast. However their "agreement" with Denny's next door was not available & gave us credit vouchers to use at either at the dreaded Waffle House or McDonalds across the street. If we have to go back to this area we will stay at a nearby city.
This is, hands down, the NASTIEST hotel I've EVER seen! The No Smoking sign on the door must merely be a suggestion because it REEKS in here. There are cigarette burns on nearly every surface. I won't even bring my bags inside because I don't want my stuff to stink like smoke. And that's not even close to the worst part. I pulled back the sheets and there are several long black hairs on the sheets and pillows, as well as a few short and curlies, along with several unidentifiable substances. I took my shoes off and took two steps before putting them right back on! My feet were not only sticky, but moist! There were crumbs on the bed and I passed no less than three hookers on my way up. I wrapped all the pillows in beach towels, covered the bed with their towels and will sleep with one eye open...if at all. It was the only hotel room left in town, or we'd be gone. UPDATE: We left at 3:00 am and spent the night in our car rather than in that nasty room. It would only let me load 10 pics, but there is so much more!
In Whiteville, NC you have very few options for lodging. The EconoLodge would never be my first choice. That said, this particular one had 3 major issues that prompted this review. First, the air conditioning. They have wall units which they keep off when guest rooms are empty. This means that when we walked into our rooms, they were 90 degrees plus. Second, the refrigerator had a small roach living in it and the ice box had dried food in it. Third the microwave was not cleaned, so it had dried food in it. But the bedding was updated. And the people were nice.
A rainstorm was about to occur, so we did not look long for a place to stay. Econo Lodge needs to train its workers on how to clean. If you are a germaphobe, do not stay here. The price was right...low, and we only stayed one night. The free breakfast isn't much so you may wish to eat elsewhere. Now this is sad...I think there was not a pool, but based on my room, I wouldn't go in it if there had been one.
There is not much choice in the town of Whiteville so we stayed here 2 nights . Room was clean , the bathroom clean and very good water pressure in shower. There were some areas in bathroom that showed some rust and worn looking areas. Bed was comfortable enough . Staff was very friendly and helpful . Typical continental breakfast offered but we went elsewhere since we wanted grits and eggs . I would stay again since I travel through this area and it is close to where I need to be .
Decided to stay overnight and hit the beach in the morning, so started checking reviews on what was available. As we got closer to the beach the pickings got slimmer and slimmer. We saw the reviews on this place and thought we probably shouldn't even stop, but what the heck, right? Boy, I'm glad we did. First thing we saw was an "under new management" sign (coulda been here for years, we didn't know). Staff was very nice, room was surprisingly clean, even the towels weren't scratchy! And we only paid $65 for the night! Definitely would stay here again!
Mat in tub..apon lifting was slim, blackand the smell made me sick. Second room moved to, was dirty, old, and air condition never cooled room. My employer booked this Indian Owned Hotel. What a dump! $79.00
Sorry y'all, this place was not great. I will not totally rip it because I grew up in the area and have love for my hometown. The room wreaked of smoke, though this was supposed to be a smoke-free room. The A/C was on, but the room wasn't cool. It eventually did cool things off but not before hissed, rattled, and display sounds of general malaise in the process. There was a mini-fridge which had a bug cooling out in it. The bathroom had a whole in the wall and the tub was less than clean. While figuring out our next move a roach quickly scurried across the headboard. It was had to tell if I was in it's room or if it was in mine. I spoke to some of my cousins that stayed in another room and they had similar stories. They were lucky to find a room in the "other" hotel nearby. They stayed one night; promptly left. We booked through Hotwire and could not leave without paying for this terrible room and a room at another hotel room. We stuck it out for the weekend but not with out visiting the local "mart" to purchase bug spray and sanitizer. And hey! What's the deal with the HBO?!?! I saw the book, but never found the channel. C'mon man!! "I wish I had more hands so I could give this hotel 4 thumbs down." I'm generally a positive person, but found very little I liked about this place. Well, at least they had some grass in a shady area and I was able to exercise in the early morning. I plan to visit home often, but I'll not stay in this "hotel" again...(;_;)
