Not really clean and its quite far from turistic places. The free breakfast is terrible and the service was not really thoughful since they do not help you a lot as you expect. But I was just one night so it could be good.
Only stayed for 1 night. Unfortunately didn't arrive until 12 am due to my bus running late. Checked in, didn't get shown to my room so I had to find it on my own. And of course the roommates were all asleep (which I mean duh, it was midnight), therefore I kept the lights off, crawled onto my top bunk... no sheets, no pillow, no blanket on the bed. So I slept in my clothes and jacket because it was pretty well cold. Went to check out the next morning figured I didn't have to check out until 10 because that's what the checkout time is for most hostels, so I showed up at the desk at 9:20 to be told I was 20 min late for checkout meaning I wasn't able to shower or anything. Wish I would have been told more details when I first arrived. Cold night. Not bitter about my stay in Australia, but definitely bitter about my stay at jolly swagmons. Sorry guys!
This is a great cheap hostel in King's Cross if you are just looking for a clean, safe bed. There are lockers to store valuables and the rooms also have locks. The other amenities are not great. You basically have to hug the wall to get any water from the showers and the kitchen doesn't have pots and pans any one can use. The "free" wifi is also very annoying to use because it kicks you out every 2 minutes. It is also set up so it is not easy to meet other solo travelers. It isn't a great typical hostel experience but at such good price it really does provide a good service.
I had my doubts but this hostel was just right. It wasn't very busy or loud and had comfortable beds and good shower. Free breakfast and wifi included and the staff was super helpful and friendly. It was a short walk from King's Cross station.
nice stay for singles and bachelors but not so good if you are going to stay with multiple family members, overall good experience as far as location is concerned , near to shops and restaurants and bus service
All staff were really friendly and accommodating. We arrived at half eight in the morning and weren't supposed to check in until twelve but we'd been on a bus for seventeen hours so the guy transferred us to a room that was already ready. Breakfast included. Great location and deals on for each night.
I decided to stay in the Jolly Swagman because of the weekly price of 25$/night. I booked for 30 nights. I arrived at 12 midday so I knew that I would probably have to wait until I can check in at 2pm. But I expected that I could leave my backpack in a luggage room or so. There is none. You have to pay for a locker. My first room was on the ground floor and a 6 bed mixed dorm. I had no socket and no light so I asked at the reception to get it fixed. I don't know if they ever did so. I changed into another bed on my second day where the light worked and I could use a socket. When you are on the ground floor you have to use the bathrooms on the first floor but I would recommend using the ones on the second floor. The water pressure is much much better. You only have a woolen blanket (which doesn't seem to be washed very often) and fresh sheets. I was very cold at night but it was absolutely no problem to get a second blanket. Unfortunately there was a man in my room who snored loudly. I mean really loudly. I couldn't even stand to stay there one week and asked to change the room. That was no big deal and I moved into a 4 dorm female room. The day-manager allowed me to have both keys until I moved everything into the other room. This room is really good. Still not enough sockets for every bed or close to every bed. But it has a cupboard with hooks and hangers. It even has a (very small) balkony. Large lockers for every one (bring own lock!) a fridge, table and chair, a mirror and a bin. Rooms are cleaned every second day.. They vacuum the floor but it's not 100% clean after. But it's all right. Bathrooms/Kitchen are cleaned every day and the guy is doing a great job. When you want to cook you have to leave the key as a deposit for pots and pans and 1$ deposit for a cup (you can use it your whole stay or keep it.. its just 1 $). Breakfast is officially from 7-9 but the night-manager makes breakfast earlier for the ones who have to go to work early. THANK YOU! There are cornflakes and an oat mix with milk. And toast, jam, tea and instant coffee. People are all nice friendly and respectful (exeptions exists...) I wanted to extend my stay for 5 nights and 2 nights in a double-bed room and they were very cooporative. It was still 25/night and the normal price for the double room. Really fair. There are some meal-deals and activities going on and you don't need to worry about coming alone. If you can stay for the weekly price of 25 per night it is definetly one of the best - maybe the best- option in sydney. It's not far from the city and pretty close to the royal botanical garden and opera house. Train station is only a few minutes walk away and there is a Coles as well. And there are loads of bars and restaurant in Kings Cross. I enjoyed my stay and really recommend the Jolly Swagman.
This was the first time ever I had stayed in a backpackers and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The rooms were clean and had everything that was needed. There were shared bathrooms and a shared kitchen and communal area. Everything was clean and people did clear up after themselves. Granted there were roaches around, but come on where doesn't have them when people drop food. This didn't affect my stay and to be honest I normally stay in 4 & 5 * hotels and this was definitely different then what i'm used to but I had fun! They have job boards so you can apply for jobs, free wifi etc, BBQ nights and nights out. I would definitely stay here again :)
The hostel is simple, but clean, especially the rooms. It's in a very convenient location, near a tube station (Kings Cross) and close to the city center (20/30 minutes walk to the Opera House). It could use a couple more bathrooms.
Stayed in this hostel for 6 nights. It's at a great location, close to the train, but walking to the CBD is no problem too. The staff was really friendly and nice. Overall the hostel was okay. Especially looking at the price I've paid. Relatively cheap for a hostel in Sydney. Could be a little cleaner thou. The showers/toilets were clean, but the showerheads were rubbish. Inside the rooms it could have been a lot cleaner. Underneath the bed was a lot of rubbish still. They clean the dorms every two days, but it's just chancing the bin and cleaning the mirror...
