This is one review which I find hard to write. Overall I must say the stay is quite nice. Great room with astonishing views. Clean. Dated maybe but well maintained like most Japanese establishments. Good front staffs who has no issues with communication. Food is fantastic and unique. Ok. Here's the part which made my review hard. The small things in life which makes you wonder if it will affect your overall rating of an establishment. Language is an issue. Majority of the guests are domestic hence there is no need for back staffs to communicate. Often this will lead to misunderstanding. Perhaps with the ever increasing visitors here they should severely consider the need for one. I will rant a little less today.
As mentioned by other reviews, nice view from the rooms. Luckily, we could see firework from our room. We had In-Room Dinner , both the quantity and quality of the food are excellent. We were also greeted and helped with our luggage when we arrived there by car. However, when we left, nobody offered help. Anyway, it's quite common in Japan.
Excellent customer service. Great food and osen. Clean room with nice view. The staff are very attentive and polite. The outdoor osen can enjoy nice river view. Not a very big hotel so you can enjoy a quiet environment. Recommend for couple.
Highly recommended! The staffs were waiting at the bus stop (across the street of the hotel) and assisted us with our luggages to the hotel. They greeted us with the great japanese hospitality, making us felt like we're the VIPs. Love their honey buffet for patrons, it was a good touch to reward guests who stays in the hotel. Overall enjoyed my stay here: -the hotel have the best koinobori view from all their rooms, during april -the onsen was perfect with useful facilities and quality amenities and skin care. -the kaiseki dinner and breakfast was one of the best meals i've had at onsen hotels -restaurant and other staffs are friendly and helpful -provides japanese shoes for you to stroll around Jozankei with their yukata -walking distance to the shopping streets and shrines -one of the front desk staffs shows a bit of attitude and racism, but that didn much affected my great experience at the hotel
Read about the rude front desk guy nevertheless still booked it. This time no guy but a lady who served me. Check in was pleasant. The view from the room was pleasant. Around bed time 2 guys came in to set up the bedding. Dinner was wonderful. Breakfast was exotic. After check out walked around the area to explore. It was a wonderful experience. Btw I didn't know the exact location to alight so I am showing the name of the bus stop here. Take no 7 bus from Sapporo Station. Also only pay when you alight.
Booked this hotel after reading the reviews here at TA. Personally, I think the rates are pretty fair in view of the quality of the meals and the view in the room. Why I gave it a three stars is of course, due to the attitude of the front desk. Could not remember the name of the front desk guy who checked us in. I have my bookings on my hands that says two rooms for 4 adults and 2 kids, from Expedia with half board and he gave me the cheap look and insisted that my two kids will not have any meals and no bedding as well. And my kids are 3 and 6 years old! When I try to reason out with him in English, he gave me the confused look and fake innocence which I felt really insulted as later on, he communicated a bit of English with me when I chose to stop reasoning and just get on with my holidays. Never expect this kind of hospitality from a Japanese as I hold high regards for their service standards. Other then the incident above, the rooms did have a great view of the river valley and the food was great! They have free beverages and honey at their lobby lounge. Great thoughts. Onsen is pretty standard.
The historical hotel is very popular among the Japanese. We all love the environment of the tiny little town where the hotel is located, the surrounding mountains and running stream puts you in a picture perfect spot. It is however quite far out from Sapporo though, about one hour 20 minutes bus ride, then again, it's Japan, so public transportation is very reliable, and bus stops are conveniently located. Hotel stay itself was a treat, the Tatami suite, Butler dinning experience in the room, large hot spring area made the experience more authentic than we could imagine. Put on our robes and walk down the winding road after the onsen is very relaxing. The only down side of this hotel is that only one staff speaks English:-(.
I've booked 2 nights stay with "Grilled Red King Crab Legs & Seasonal Kaiseki Course Dinner Plan" @ Y57,000 per night. Unfortunatelly, I got the grilled red king crab only the first night. On 2nd night I got only Kaiseki Set, then made an enquiry at reception desk, a staff said they changed the grilled king crab disk with a simmered dish which I totally sure that the simmerred dish was belong to Kaiseki Set. I paid extra Y2X,XXX (normal plan for 1 night stay at this hotel is 3X,XXX/night) for it but I didn't get it. While I asked the staff, he also reply me with an unfriendly face all the time.
Location was good. It was near the main road but all guest rooms were facing the gorge so noise was not an issue. Most of the staff were friendly and helpful except the male staff at the front desk when we checked in. Free honey tasting and non-alcoholic drinks were served at the lobby lounge most of the time for hotel guests so we would take a rest there after our walk or after having a spa. There was no tour group so the hotel was not crowded. Japanese set meals were served at the restaurant instead of buffet. We stayed there for two nights and we were served different menu for each meal. Room was clean but a bit out-dated. View of the gorge was nice but room windows were not wide enough for us to fully enjoy the view. Futon beds were made by the hotel maid during our dinner time and beds were quite comfortable. Onsen was good and I enjoyed the open air hot spring. Unlike other large onsen hotels, no transport was provided for hotel guests. We took the Jozankei Onsen Kappa Liner express bus from Sapporo Station to Jozankei Onsen (about 60 minutes) . Since reservation could only be made by phone call in Japanese, we went to the Tourist Information Centre at Sapporo Station for assistance and the staff there helped us to make a reservation. The Kappa Liner was not full on our travel day and numerous seats were available. There were also Jotetsu buses departing regularly from JR Sapporo Station and reservation was not required. The Jotetsu bus would take about 70 minutes to arrive Jozankei.
I believe most guests here would know that this is onsen area, but I didn't have much time to book a hotel, and there was no available hotel in Otaru so I stayed here. From Otaru to here it takes very long time, and mountain path, too. But staying here itself was not bad. There is an outdoor pool, tiny but cozy. Onsen was not so big but good enough. It's a shame I stayed only 1 night and went to Otaru again...
