The good bits. The rooms are large and the beds are typical Marriott beds, very comfortable. The hotel has good manicured grounds and it is on the beach which is clean, soft sand and clean water. The kids loved the beach and the waves. There is also a lovely pool near the beach and a couple at the back of the hotel near the kids club. The hotel staff try very hard despite a language barrier, the wonders of internet translators were very helpful at times or they will call over staff that can help. The family package included round trip transfer to the airport, free kids drinks, 4 hours use of the kids club, discounted food and a kids pizza, (however see comment on food below) The bad. The hotel is a bit tired and in need of some renovation or some TLC. It has probably not been upgraded for quite a while and it is showing it's age. The ugly. The restaurants are very expensive and I don't know what they have done to the food but it's awful. I would suggest go to the restaurant immediately outside the hotel where there is a small shopping centre with 3 restaurants. We only went to the first one, 4 nights in row. It's about a third of the price and the food is excellent. The breakfast was included in our room rate and is quite extensive but we found it hard to find anything that looked appetising. It became a running joke. I think most of the food had been previously frozen then thawed out so it looked rancid. Get there early as the queue can be quite long since it's included and the entire hotel arrives from about 8.15. The rest of the time the restaurants are quite empty.
we had a great pleasure to be at this hotel with our 2 kids and grandparents. i cannot say enough about hotel's management and hosts. everybody was accommodating and thoughtful. in fact we had punctured a hole in a wheel of our stroller. one of hotel staff persons took it and found a place to fix it in sanya. though he was not working the following day when we had to leave, he sent it with another staff member to deliver it to our door. Hotel General manager, Jim Khoo, would personally stop by to greet people, including us, at a fantastic breakfast buffet. we truly felt welcome in a completely foreign country. Spa was amazing and relaxing, and our kids took full advantage of multitude of kids rooms with toys and children activities. we loved many swimming pools and the beach. we highly recommend the place and cannot wait to come back. If you want to rest, this hotel is not Not for you: screamings at any time, swimming pool is full of kids, If you want to do sport, unfortunately there are no activities at the hotel The staff do not speak English or any other languages Rooms are old Cleaning is just to say you have staff in your room but do not expect a good cleaning At the end choose another hotel and write to the Marriott to explain how bad effect this hotel has on the trade mark!!!
Like all the rope-end resorts in Yalong Bay the Marriott was set in beautiful grounds with both a swimming pool complex and a private beach. They also offered a superb breakfast menu as part of the package. Unfortunately I found that the ambience did not match the setting. As well as a list of rules around what you could not do, many of which were only to benefit the hotel's image, the staff were not very helpful and gave the impression that the guests were in the way of them doing their job. For example, at breakfast the staff clearing tables were pushing in front of the guests as they weaved through the tables, and when I tried to get a table for two because my wife was on her way down, suddenly nobody understood a word I was saying and forced me to sit at a bench with only room for one. The pool service was likewise very second rate in most cases. The other annoying trick was the pricing of snacks and restaurant meals was all very over-inflated, like three times the price of the same item at a shopping centre a five minute drive away. These are not big things, but when there are a number of other big-name resorts in the same area, I will be going somewhere else next time.
Booked four rooms in this hotel to stay with family, unfortunately we were only staying one night. I thought the hotel was stunning! The lobby area is luxurious and looks stunning on arrival. We had our Chinese speaking daughter in law with us which made the check in process easier but receptionist did seem to have some grasp of English. Our room was upgraded and we had a fantastic view over the bay and grounds of the hotel. We ate in the main restaurant and descended rather late after 10 pm but we were served a lovely meal with very helpful staff even though we were the only people in the restaurant and they were obviously preparing for the morning. The bed was super comfortable, room spotless, good supply of toiletries, etc. Breakfast was a feast, lots of choice, many stations serving many different types of cuisine. We all enjoyed breakfast sat outside overlooking the lovely gardens. The pool is fantastic, laid out on different levels. We walked to the beach, about 200 yards from hotel and there were lots of available sunbeds with parasols to sit on. Sea looked very powerful but there was a sectioned of part with a life guard watching. I probably wouldn't have gone in if I wasn't a very strong swimmer. The beach went on for miles, crisp white sand and views were amazing Check out was again straightforward. We booked transport to hotel and I would recommend you doing this as it made journey from airport very straightforward. Our son and daughter in law arranged a boat trip through hotel info and this was excellent. I was very nervous about visiting China but enjoyed staying her so much making plans to go back to Hainan1
The hotel is set on a wide sandy beach alongside other major hotels like Ritz, Hilton, Sheraton, MGM Grand. It has three pools but what it really comes down to is one usable two tier pool by the beach. The other two pools (the kids pool and a lap pool) is at the front of the hotel which is too far away from the beach. I am not sure why it is set up that way. We are here during the low season so luckily there are plenty of places to sit with shades and without shades. The beach front has great shaded area as well as nice lounge chairs. Sanya is set in a very tropical setting. The staffs are very nice and accommodating and kept the place well organized and clean. The grounds are well manicured and maintained. The two tier pool is great. Most guests are Chinese and Russian. One thing I must complaint about is that I have NEVER seen any parents put swim diapers on their little ones. Many times they just allow the baby to 4 year old swim naked. Talk about hygiene problem because I know they don't take them to the restroom - have yet to see any little one use the proper facility. Then you will see parents simply allow their kid to pull down their shorts and pee in the sand or in the bushes when the nearest restroom is just steps away without making any attempt to go there. Lack of responsible parents is a major problem here but then the Marriott employee simply can't be everywhere to supervise or police everything. I sure this is probably common in most hotels in the area. Unless like most guests we like our rooms very cool. The hotel seems to have control of the temperature where our desired temperature can never be reached but they were accommodating enough in bringing up two fans for us to use, It still is not cold enough for our liking but helped a lot. Other than the lack of responsible parents who should be teaching their kids to be kids not puppies, the hotel is great.
Stayed at this Hotel the first time. It is so big, you need a lot of time just to get familiar with the Hotel alone. Take this time, its worth it to found out all about it Overall Hotel is nice, great service, specially at the Executive floor, just they could maybe offer a little bit more western food there. Be also aware the Hotel dont have a beach, just a swimming pool and i am surprised how the handle it if the Hotel is booked fully. Now low season and already difficult to get a free place. And i hate it when people go down early in the morning, take the towels and receiver there seat !! then will arrive much later ! Hotel should not allow this which is not fair to all other guest overall, enjoy it, location also close to some food street and other local sightseeing places
Ok great location, easy to get to from the Airport (40 minutes) and as always with Marriott Hotels Ive stayed in, the bed and pillows are quite simply the best, now to the bad points. Checking in, took way too long, only 1 staff member on duty (actually on the desk) lots of other staff members milling around doing nothing, and lots of guests departing and checking out which basically consisted of cards being thrown on the reception desk whilst shouting out there room numbers. Additionally a Russian couple were having problems with something so the gentlemen was using the phone (which he didn't need to do, Im sure they were hearing him in Moscow as he was a tad loud) I had to ask him to move away from the reception desk as I couldn't hear the very quietly spoken receptionist. This was just after midday on Saturday 8th April. On Sunday the 9th, upon returning to my room I was unable to get in due to the electronic keys not working, so back to the receptionist desk to exchange, long walk. Then I wished to exchange my local currency for some Chinese RMB, after staring at my Thai Baht for some time, and a couple of phone calls. I was informed that they wouldn't be able to exchange as they "don't do Thai Baht', I then presented my Amex card, which according to Hotel Documentation, "Amex cards are accepted for Foreign transactions" apparently not if they are Amex Cards issued in Thailand. Monday, back to room at lunch, unable to get in due to faulty key cards, back to reception again.... Have you cards been next to a mobile phone...........No Ok sir, here are some more cards (that have been reused thousands of times) Six hours later, unable to gain access to my room again, go through the whole rigmarole about mobile phones being next to cards again and then receive 2 brand new cards that have never been used, at last! Why has a 5 star hotel got a security system have key cards that a) can be undone by being next to a mobile phone and b) Continue to issue old cards that obviously have problems (I was not the only one who had problems with key cards, it seems a regular occurrence) I was there for a conference so used the conference facility, the gentlemens toilet on the right hand side of the building had on any given day two taps that didn't work, and soap dispensers that wouldn't look out of place at a student dorm. In this day and age, charging for Wifi in the room is just plain WRONG, now they will let you know that if you become a Marriott member Wifi is free, so you could join and delete your membership after your stay, but, and its a BIG but, charging for WIFI is wrong. Oh last but not least channel 8 on the in-house TV showed the Green Zone, followed by a documentary "the making of the Green Zone" followed by the film The green Zone followed by a documentary "the making of the Green Zone" followed by the film The green Zone etc etc, this was of the whole 5 day stay
We stayed for 8 days in order to break up from the Mainland noise and pollution and were not disappointed. The gardens are magnificent and well maintained, with a wide variety of tropical plants and flowers. The beach is clean. The staff is both friendly and efficient. We were impressed in particular by a local young man called Johnny who seemed to know exactly what places we wanted to visit on the island and organized everything for us before we even had to ask. Very good resort overall.
Decided to spend a weekend after work, hotel facility is well maintained for an old hotel, the beach is close and pool is nice, the garden is also nice. Great for people who enjoy green. Hotel staff are friendly and helpful. The only thing could use some improvement is the bed, the matriess is too soft...
