Uncover Puerto Rico's historic roots in San Juan

San Juan, the resplendent capital of Puerto Rico, was founded in 1521 by the explorer Juan Ponce de Leon. Second only to Dominican Republic's Santo Domingo for the title of oldest settlement in the New World, the architecture and narrow streets of Old San Juan provide a glimpse into the Caribbean island's colonial past. But visitors check into San Juan hotels just as much for the Technicolor diving spots beneath the waves as they do for the evocative ruins of Spanish fort Castillo de San Cristóbal, perched high on the rocky coastline. To the east, the breezy Condado neighborhood boasts a refreshing mix of beaches, boutiques and modern fusion cuisine.

Neighborhoods
Old San Juan

Established several hundred years ago, Old San Juan is a charming community filled with beautifully restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish Colonial architecture. The central Plaza de San Jose is adorned with a bronze statue of Ponce de Leon made from captured British cannons, and the nearby Plaza del Quinto Centenario celebrates the Great Navigator's arrival in 1492. The fortress walls of the San Felipe del Morro bastion, commonly referred to as El Morro, are a symbol of the city, rivaling San Cristobel fort. Stay in the selection of hotels at the western tip of the island for some historical context and easy access to sites like the government residence “La Fortaleza”, part of the San Juan National Historic Site.

Condado

A popular base for visitors since it's located in between the bridges to Old San Juan and Isla Verde to the east, Condado has the effortless air of a boardwalk town: tree-shaded avenues, oceanfront resorts and restaurants dishing up everything from Argentinian grills to Asian-Latino bites. Book into hotels near the lagoon for the best waterfront vistas in every direction, or head south around Calle Marginal for hotels that put you near the fascinating Museum of Art of Puerto Rico.

Things to do
Watersports

Visitors who stay in San Juan hotels can relax on the crystalline Condado Beach, but visitors might want to go for the thrills of surfing, parasailing and kiteboarding out in the bay. The colorful undersea menagerie of coral, sea turtles and tropical fish will spellbind snorkelers and divers, and rare sights like eagle rays, nurse sharks and massive schools of Blue Tank patrol these waters. San Juan's urban green spaces provide magnificent views of the city, harbor and surrounding mountains.

Shopping in San Juan

Boredom is out of the question in San Juan, with its eclectic shops, restaurants, cafés and bistros, as well as clubs and live performance venues. In addition to local artisan shops, there is a diverse range of fine jewelers, brand name outlets and chic boutiques. The Plaza Las Americas, one of the largest shopping malls in the US, hosts antique shows, craft fairs and art exhibits, as well as some of the most luxurious retailers on the island.

Special events
Fall/Winter

The winter season in San Juan heralds the parades, music and other celebrations of the pre-Lent, week-long Ponce Carnival as well as the San Sebastian Street Festival. In October, visitors can enjoy the full-length movies, short films and documentaries of the San Juan Cinemafest as well as the traditional dances and music of the Le Lo Lai Cultural Festival.

Spring/Summer

In summer, enjoy the food, music and festivities of the Bautista Celebration, which honors the city's patron saint, and the Casals Festival, a world-class music festival honoring the renowned cellist Pablo Casals.

Don't worry if you miss any of these events, however: Festival La Casita features music and dance performances, many of which are geared toward younger audiences, and you can catch this every Saturday throughout the year.

Travel information

While many visitors arrive by cruise ship, San Juan is also accessible by ferry service from the Dominican Republic and the Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU), which is served by numerous major international air carriers. One of the most important transportation hubs in the West Indies, the airport is approximately 10 miles from the center of the city.
