We stayed at the Hotel van Walsum for a week, enjoying Rotterdam for its fabulous modern architecture and as a base for many easy day trips (Delft, Gouda, the Hague). (I really don't understand why more people don't do that! But the staff at the hotel as well as the staff at our hotel in Amsterdam confirmed this observation.) Our room and bathroom were great, both larger than I generally expect in Europe. The breakfast buffet was perhaps the best one we had in the Netherlands. There was so much choice! I think I had something different every morning. The breakfast room was comfortable and never over-crowded, although the hotel seemed to be quite full. There was always staff around and everyone was both helpful and friendly. If I'm ever back in Rotterdam, this is where I will be staying.
We stayed there for 2 nights, including breakfast and a parking space. The room desperetly needed refurbishing. It was totally different from the pictures on the website. For the 3 of us to fit in such a small room and sleep in one bed was absolutely disastrous. Yes, my kid is 3-yo, but still... Breakfast was OK, one could say... nothing speciall. Plus, what I found a bit annoying, was being asked several times for the room number during the breakfast. I thought they keep a record of those who come to eat and not that every 2 minutes another hotel employee comes to ask the same question. I guess I won't book the room here anymore.
Our third-floor room was cosy (read: small - though the bathroom was relatively spacious) and quiet. We stayed six nights, using Rotterdam as a base for exploring not only the city but also Den Haag, Delft, Dordrecht and more. Staff were friendly and helpful, and on duty 24.7 at the front desk. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, the breakfast room not crowded and extending, weather permitting, to a pleasant courtyard out the back. The hotel has a lift, as well as stairs if you want to work off some of the calories from all the beer and friets. It's near key bus and tram lines, which work very well with the tourist day cards that you can buy from the tourist info place at Centraal Station (euro 7.50 per day, with extra discounts available for various museums and activities if you buy the discount book as well).
I stayed 2 nights in this beautiful hotel. Upon arrival I received good information about what to do in Rotterdam. Narrow acces to the parking lot, the price of 15,- per night is reasonable. The room was well equipped with a good bed. I had 1 time breakfast in the lovely garden.
We checked in very easily to this hotel. The staff at the desk were pleasant. We got up to our room which was large. Very high ceilings with beautiful gold trim. Unfortunately the room may have had a smoker or a pet before us, as the room had an interesting smell. The bathroom was small with the shower over the bath. The pressure of the shower was quite low. BEWARE the bath is extremely slippery, my husband fell and hit his head. The bed was low, and the mattress needed to be flipped as there was a big dip in the middle where lots of travellers before us have slept. Our room faced the road, and during the night we heard every noise. If you are thinking of staying here request a room away from the road. Car parking is available for 15 euro per day The breakfast which is included is simple; bacon, scrambled eggs, backed beans and pancakes, as well as a selection of bread and pastries with sweet and savoury options. Coffee machine is excellent, as well as fresh fruit. We found the 24hr reception difficult as you need to buzz for entry, and are then forced into small talk. Location is good. A short walk from the centre of town. When we return to Rotterdam we will look for different accomodation.
Stayed here for one night driving across Europe. Judging by previous reviews we were expecting a beautifully decorated traditional room. However, it was a bit more like an elderly person's residence. Quite pricy too. Staff weren't overly friendly. Unfortunately I wouldn't rush back. Car park is a bit of a palaver to get to, we were given a key to open and close the garage door but weren't told we had to give it back, so the morning after a few people were waiting to get their car out as the hotel didn't have a spare key for the garage door. Very embarrassing!
The hotel is not too big, just right. Their own parking area is great. Front desk is 24 hours and very friendly. Rooms really are smallish and dated and if you don't have one with airconditioning, it does get warm on a warm summer evening. But honestly, it hardly ever is too hot in Holland... and the room is clean. The hotel does have a bar area and a cosy garden where you can enjoy a drink. Very nice on the above said summer night. Breakfast okay. Location is good, close to City center and some nice restaurants and bars close by. I would say this hotel is good for one night and if you intend to only be in the room for sleep only.
The Staff is the key ingredient to the flavor of the Hotel Van Walsum. The staff is brilliant and friendly. It is truly home away from home. The bonus is the location and food. The public transportation is in waling distance and the breakfast is brunch.
This is what we find a family run hotel in the centre of Rotterdam. The owner gave us a warm welcome and informed us well what to do in Rotterdam. The rooms are not big but all the facilities we needed where there. The Wifi was good. The breakfast was excellent. We loved the little garden!!
We were surprised about the loaction. Nice bars and shops around. Very helpfull staff. Good size room and excelent breakfast in the lovely garden. Fast WIFI connection in the room. We used the car parking of the hotel (15,-) much cheaper than to park on the street. We will be back!!
