I visited Bel Horizon last summer and staying in a guest house was a new experience for me. The owner (or representative, I'm not too sure) Mauro was welcoming and friendly and helped us during our stay. He also pointed out some good places to eat and visit along the way. The guest house was relatively awkward to locate, despite being on the specified street, the only indication of its existence is a small namecard on a wall buzzer. Once inside their is a small common area with 3/4 rooms branching from it. One of these rooms is Mauro's which is handy when needing advice etc. The rooms are pleasant and simple however the rooms facing the road are relatovley noisey at night. In this common area there was a water dispenser, a fridge and coffee maker along with cereal (looked off). Mauro did bring in a tray of fresh crossiants and pastry's each morning which were great. Having been dubious of the shared bathroom beforehand, it wasn't a big issue as it was clean. Located between the train station and the colleseum, the guest house was within walking distance of most of the major attractions. It had a metro stop on the street outside which was also handy for the further away attractions. Bel Horizon was a cheap and cheerful place to stay and a pleasantly new experience.
When I booked this 'hotel' I paid extra to stop in the Annex Building which I believed had a private bathroom as the others we're all shared. When I arrived, after 10 or so minutes of waiting outside we came into a small room and was asked to pick which bedroom we'd like and to my surprise it was JUST a bed room and in fact was a shared bathroom which was shared with the owner and her brother. She then explained that the annex building which i had booked was at another address but was no different as to where we were currently at, and said that it also had a shared bathroom but she hasn't yet cleaned this and would have to do so. But tired from traveling I just wanted to get settled so I said we would stay put. The room was extremely noisy from both outside and inside. The doors buzzer was constants disturbing us. The owner would keep knocking on our door to ask us silly questions and then would stand talking for ages and basically just harassed you the whole time you was there. We was also told by the owner not to keep the room window open as someone could break in from the outside which didn't fill me with confidence. The place is in the not so nice part of Rome. After a huge confusion about payment we had to pay cash for the room as apparently her card machine wasn't working. However after 100s of times of asking for a receipt, she never gave us one which to me just means it's a huge tax avoidance job! The bedroom was incredibly basic and the floor hadn't been hoovered. It's a very dull and bleak 'hotel' staying here made me feel completely uncomfortable and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. For the price you pay I'm certain you can find somewhere nicer. The bathroom is really small and there was a damp towel used as a shower mat that was disgusting and covered in filth, the toilet was stained at the bottom and there was the owners hair all over the sink and floor. The owner tidies your room every day but also she put things back into my suitcase which made me feel uncomfortable that she has been inside my case whilst I wasn't there. I'm assuming she ment well by it but it's still not nice to come back to. If your a little fussy about absolutely anything then DO NOT stay here. If your happy with the bare minimum and basically sharing your holiday experience with the room owner then go for it. Not what I expected at all and wouldn't stay here again. It's a huge no from me.
We booked a room for two in the hostel, but at the arrival they told us that there were no rooms for us so they moved us to an apartment near the hostel (not that bad). The owner told us they were going to bring us the breakfast every morning.... FALSE. We are so dissappointed due the bad organization... Never more!
Thought I should share an honest up to date review to prevent other people making the mistake of booking with this establishment. I booked the hotel Bel Horizon in a bit of a rush but having seen the 4 star rating on trip advisor I wasn't worried. I did however notice a range of odd charges to pay on arrival on my booking confirmation, these did not make sense with overlapping eg cleaning deposits and cleaning charges as well as 2 or 3 euros for breakfast. Surely there is a set price? I emailed the owner who had been described as very helpful on various reviews to let them know our arrival/departure times as well as to get clarification on the charges and thought nothing more of it. When I did not receive a response I resent it, filled in the contact page on the website and sent a private Facebook message. More time passed with no response and I also noticed that there had not been any reviews for a couple of months. Concerned about this lack of response I raised a customer service request with the booking agent and several days later finally got a response from the owner. This should have set alarm bells as she asked which address we had booked for, very odd considering there was only one hotel with that name in Rome and we had booked based on the location. Nothing else on the email about the charges or any professional comments eg thanks for your booking just which address. The only other thing was a mention of city tax in her signature, 2 euros so different from the 3 listed on our booking. I confirmed the only address I was aware of and she said that's fine to check in at 9pm and she will reconfirm charges. Well what a load of tosh, did I hear from her again no. We arrived 15 minutes late due to our flight but made good time and arrived at the hotel 10 minutes later than agreed. Despite the lack of signage we noticed the name on one of the buzzers so pressed the bell keen to get to settled in after a day of travelling. We kept trying for five minutes before trying to call, several calls later my boyfriend got through and we were told to wait ten minutes. Eventually after almost half an hour of waiting in the cold a gentleman arrived and looked at my booking voucher. He let us into a small room with a coffee machine and 2 seats then said he would be back and disappeared. There were three or four rooms all opening into this hallway with one bathroom. Imagine the shock of a woman coming out of the bathroom just in a towel to see two people sitting there! It wasn't particularly clean and welcoming but by that point we just wanted to sleep. The man returned around ten minutes later and said they had family staying so there was no room for us so we had been moved to an apartment in another area of the city but it was fine as it meant a private bathroom. We had no choice but to agree and set off on a 15-20 minute walk through a not so nice part of Rome away from the direction of the main tourist attractions. After heading again through and unmarked door and down into what was essentially the basement we reached our final destination. We were let in given a map and told to help ourselves to breakfast and the man disappeared. We ventured into our room which smelt of damp, had not been hoovered and was hotter than the sun, but it did have a private small bathroom. We also ate our own breakfast having not paid the extra charge. However after seeing the options we decided 2/3 euros was far too much for some unhygienic cornflakes that looked like they had been open for months and uht milk with no sign of a fridge. Yum. Two nights in we returned back to find a woman demanding city tax of 3.5 euros per night, again a different amount to what we had been told. We paid it and went to sleep as we were exhausted from sightseeing. If they had demanded any cleaning fee we would have refused as we did not see any sign of cleaners during the four nights we were there. It was also very noisy. We later found out the apartment was known as Shiva B&B for your reference. I would never stay in either establishment again, not worth the amount paid in my opinion and both were in not very nice areas where I felt unsafe. Please don't make the same mistake we did and avoid these rooms.
Bel Horizon is located in an apartement nearby a metro station and the main train station of Rome. Furthermore the Colosseum and Forum Romanum are within walking distance. Everyday I had a nice breakfast including a pastry, fresh made omelette, fruit and some cappuccino. The bathroom is shared with two other rooms. During my stay the bathroom has always been very clean.
Located in the very city center: 5 minutes to the nearest subway entrance, 10 min from Termini, 15 min from Colosseum and Roman Forum. Spacious room, wonderful breakfast (coffee, tea, juices, pastries, homemade omelet, fresh baked bread...). Sandra was a wonderful tourist guide, she showed us the nearest points of interest, tips for lunch and dinner... We were afraid about the zone, because of the reviews we had read, but it's a quiet zone (at least in October). Too bad the bathroom is shared, spacious and clean though. We will come back the next time we visit Rome :D Thank you very much Sandra!
Great location in Rome and a very intimate and homelike environment. Mauro made us breakfast and showed us on the map exactly what we should see in the city and helped us arrange our whole itinerary!!
Great location, very easy to get to from the Train Station. Very central, allowing us to walk to all of the city's attractions. Big, clean room and bathroom. The service was great during our entire stay. Mauro made us feel very welcome and cooked us an omelette as a special extra for breakfast. We had a great few days.Highly recommended!
Couldn't find for ages despite map and instructions, no signs, the only indication a tiny sticker on a door. No way to get in unless someone is there, pressing the buzzer for half an hour got no response, finally got in by someone with key, checked all floors with no idea which room. Finally we asked someone who pointed to an unmarked door, went in, dodgy as anything. We refused to stay there, found another hotel and still got charged €75 for it. What a scam! Unsafe area, would not advise! Find somewhere else!
This bed and breakfast is definitely one of the best places I've seen. You'll definitely feel at home with their very accommodating and friendly staff. What's even more impressive is the fact that it is conveniently located in the central part of the city making some of the best tourist attractions really accessible. Felt like I was just at home during the entire stay. Not that pricey compared to other hostels or bed and breakfasts. Would definitely choose this place the next time I visit. Highly recommended especially to those who haven't visited the city yet. Best value indeed!
