Tradicional Villa Del Mar2.5 out of 5.0

First, this is the Tradicional Hotel Villa Del Mar in central downtown Puerto Vallarta, NOT the beach resort Villa Del Mar. If you are a traveler, I think you would like this hotel. If you are a tourist, probably not. I chose the Villa Del Mar because I wanted to stay in the heart of the PV community. This hotel attracts Mexican families, so is good with the natives. The staff were very friendly and helpful. My room was tiny and basic but clean. But for me I just needed a place to sleep after being out all day. It is in the heart of downtown PV, so can be noisy at night. Villa Del Mar is about a 10 minute walk to the Malcona and beach. Easy to get to and I felt safe both during the day and night. The upstairs roof balcony is nice and when I was there rarely visited by others. We took a prepaid "Grayline" shuttle car from the airport to the hotel, and back when our trip was over. On that note, when you arrive at the PV airport march directly out of the airport ignoring all the many, many, many timeshare con people who will try to confuse you and get you to their swindle timeshares. We had a great trip with plenty of good food and for me some tasty Mexican beers!
I had been delighted see the pictures and location in Romantic Zone for a great price on Expedia. But when we arrived, the entire hotel reeked so badly of a strong disinfectant that I got an instant headache. For the price quoted, our room was “inside” with no windows or ac and we paid to upgrade to an “exterior” hoping some airflow would take out the smell. It did help a little but the noise level was so bad with the open windows that we had to go buy earplugs to sleep. The rooms didn’t look anything like the pictures posted online. You couldn’t open one side of the closet door because it looked like termites had chewed the bottom to splinters, there was a light bulb hanging over a rusted mirror in the bathroom, and almost no hot water. I asked the front desk if we could get out of our two week prepaid contract with a one day penalty fee. They said it had nothing to do with them....all up to Expedia. I tried to phone all the numbers Expedia provided and none of them worked in Mexico. I sent many emails and got no response except the automatic “Thank you for your enquiry. Someone will be in touch”. After a week of headaches and no sleep, I was so sick that I paid the airline change fee and cut my holiday short. On the way home, I received an email from Expedia saying they were sorry but the hotel policy was no refunds and Expedia could therefore do nothing. I will never stay at that hotel or use Expedia again. Terrible customer service from both!
You get what you pay for ...except in this case I got a bit more. Bargain, clean hotel in the middle of the old district. Huge balcony, satellite TV with English channels. Unlimited HOT water. Luc Marie, at the front desk took care of all my concerns and she speaks English. I was there the 3 days before Christmas and had a great time. They stock 3 English language tourist magasines which were helpful. Free coffee, not Nescafe, every morning. The price was only 500 pesos, which is now 700 until mid march. Lower without the balcony. Actually, for the price and location, they should get 5 stars which I may change if I cannot come up with any negatives. By the way, you don't save any money booking online so it is easier to just call them and I didn't even need to give them my credit card #. Total trust and my room was ready when I got there. So, if a 2 star hotel is what you are after, this one is much better than my previous favourite....Hotel Belmar.....and same location and price. Just book and go. Enjoy. Laird
This was a little hotel with a little price (I think less than 400 pesos per night at the rate I got). For that price one should not expect luxury. And make no mistake, one does not get it. But what you do get is a clean and basic room in a good location. I loved the location and tried many of the little 'hole in the wall' type of restaraunts that are in the same neighborhood. It's also close to the beach, the Malecon, the bus terminal. I liked the rustic feel of the public areas. I also found the bed comfortable but I like a firmer mattress than most. It was also nice that water was replenished in the room daily. Internet was not very good except in the lobby. Would I stay again? Maybe I'd spend a few more deniero and get someplace with more amenities but the location and price is hard to beat. I stayed here after having spent my last three stays in Puerto Vallerta at Villa Premiere. Make no mistake, that place is leagues nicer than Villa Del Mar, but so was the price. My finances dictated a cheaper vacation this time around, and I was not at all disappointed by the different experience that staying at this place afforded.
We loved our stay at this hotel its basically a 3.5 but close to 4 star hotel, its older but well kept and cleaned, great hotel staff friendly and helpful. Check in was quick and they allowed us to check in 4 hrs early, check out was easy and quick. Hotel is right on the beach small but clean, lots of chairs, Two pools never busy, showers outside and a hot tube. The hotel is a 10 minute bus ride to downtown and the Marina, lots of restaurants nearby and across the street is a large shopping centre and 9 food trucks with a nice shaded sit down area. Wifi is $10 a day and a little slow, lots of day time and evening shows and dinners. We would most certainly return
I stayed in the Hotel Villa Del Mar twenty years ago as a student in the New World Teachers Program at the University of Guadalajara-Puerto Vallarta and resided there for a month (18 October - 17 November 1997). It was a great stay! Everyone on-staff were hard-working and kind: the front desk ladies were knowledgeable of the local area and the city at large and the cleaning ladies were always very hard-working, diligent, and accommodating. There are several restaurants, tortiilerias, cafes, and shops nearby, and the beach is only aobut six or seven blocks away, and the Municipal Market Rio Cuale is very near, as well. It was a JOY to stay here! If I ever travel to Puerto Vallarta again, I know whwre my wife and I will stay: Hotel Villa Del Mar!
Hey... it is what it is. It's certainly not a luxury resort, but they're not charging luxury prieces. It's an older traditional Mexican hotel in a charming neighbourhood a few blocks from the beach. The rooms are small by US standards, and there are few amenities. But it's clean, the bed was comfortable, and the staff are friendly and helpful. There can be an issue with noise, and the internet in the room was spotty at best. And there's no elevator. Overall, we'd be happy to stay there again.
Hotel is comfortable and clean. Maid service daily, but our room didn't get cleaned until late afternoon, making afternoon siesta bothersome. Staff is very accommodating and friendly. WiFi is good if you are near the router (we weren't). Our room was located overlooking the road and got quite noisy. Closing the window helped some.
I have stayed here in 2015, 2016, and will be staying again this year in February. This is a great little hotel for a low-key, low-maintenance traveler. The staff is very friendly and the housekeepers do a fantastic job on making sure your room is cleaned daily. I've never had any issues staying here, would recommend for solo travelers like myself.
This hotel is exactly as advertised. The rooms are basic, clean, and affordable. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The location was perfect, within walking distance to pretty much everything. The only issue is traffic noise. I will stay here again.
