I stayed a day and a half with a G Adventures tour and while maintenance doesn't seem to be a priority, don't let that disuade you from staying as I found it to be a neat and clean property. My room on the 6th floor afforded views over the Cathederal and some of the Zocolo, but both queen size beds in the room were as soft as a wrought iron park bench. There was an in-room safe available as well. The staff were super friendly staff - all be it with limited English.

Traveled with a group of people, some rooms were updated some not, the rooms were clean. Staff was polite and helpful. No frills hotel, had a nice view from my room. Great location, in walking distance of stores and restaurants.

Great hotel situated in a great location close to the Zocolo. Twin room with two double beds - still plenty of room. Room was clean. No fridge. Bathroom spacious with shower over the tub. Hairdryer provided. Laundry prices were a little pricey. Overall great stay.

Excellent choice, if spending time in historical centro of Puebla. For the price it’s simply a no-brainer. Clean, fully equipped with everything you’d need, friendly service and so centrally located that you’d have to be camping right in the center of the Zocalo to improve your location. Modern by Centro Historico standards, and a really fine restaurant as part of its offerings. We stayed in room 703 and it was just lovely. Everything you need is just steps away, and all the places you want to visit in the centro are easy walking distance. I wouldn’t consider staying anywhere else next return trip to Puebla’s historic center. and daytime manager Santiago Ignacio Gomez couldn’t be more helpful or charming. And try to get restaurant’s afternoon/evening waiter named Raul; simply the best.

Hotel Gilfer (Engl pron/ hil-fair) is located one very short block from the Zocalo, the beautiful center piece of Puebla. From one side of the building, there is gorgeous view of the Zocalo and its spectacular church. The other side has a panoramic mountain view with an active volcano in the middle. The historic center of Puebla is a bustling city, but with the friendly atmosphere we have grown to expect in Mexico. It is one of the cleanest places I have ever seen - the cleaning crew arrives at 7:30 every morning , and does a thorough job at making everything spotless. Every Sunday morning is 'family day' at the Zocalo. The streets are closed to traffic and restricted to pedestrians and cyclists There are games for the young as well as the wanna be young. The hotel is friendly and very clean, thanks to the very efficient and accommodating staff. There was not much English, but lots of smiles and extra effort. Facilities are somewhat dated, especially the shower. Overall, not much of an inconvenience. Bottom line, I would not hesitate to return to Gilfer, and would enthusiastically recommend it.

The location, only one block off the main square, is excellent. Good value price for the room. Be sure to ask to see the room you will get. We rented two "executive" rooms -- one was excellent with large windows and views; the other had large "windows" but half of the window was simply a curtain over the wall. Crazy. But. Lots hot water. Comfortable bed. We will stay here again.

Stayed here after climbing Ixta and headed to Orizaba. Had two rooms of same room type. One was great. Room 701. Very large room, nice bathroom, and seemed very clean. The other room (702) not so good. Small room with large bathroom that was in rough shape. Not sure why the quality between the two was vastly different. I would stay in the nicer room again but would avoid hotel if all rooms like our second room. The staff was outstanding and very helpful. This goes a long way for me. The location was also great. 1/2 block to the square where a lot was going on.

We recently stayed at this hotel before the Day of the Death Festival and really enjoyed it! Rooms are quite big, really well iluminated and spotlessly clean. If you are lucky enough to get a room on the left side of the elevator, you will enjoy some amazing views of the cathedral and Popocateptl (vulcano). The staff was lovely and couldnt be more helpful. We only had one day in Puebla and wanted to visit Cholula at first time in the morning but any tour organized this express visit, but the hotel contacted someone who arranged this crazy visit for us!!! Breakfast was quite nice too, we ordered some ham and cheese "molletes" (bread), with pico de gallo (onion, peppero, tomato...), unlimited coffe and orange juice. Tasty and not very expensive. We only regret not having spent more time in Puebla as it was one of our favourite stops in the country.

The room was kind of clean and the hotel was in a good location. That's it. I was woken up 5 times during the night by yelling guests, music, and alarms. The staff was rude when we asked for an additional towel and some glasses. The beds were not really comfortable and the view from the room was an ugly brick wall. I would come back if there was no other option, but for the price I feel you can do better.

I've been staying at the Gilfer for more than a decade. Supposedly they made some renovations recently. We didn't see them. I chose the Gilfer for location. It is on the backside of the block bordering their zocalo. We had reservations and I asked for a room with a view of the cathedral. You could see only the bell towers from the room we were given. The porter called the front desk and we were moved to a higher floor but still not great. We were told it was an executive suite but it was the same size and furnished exactly as the lower floor. The front desk clerk told us we would not pay the increased charge this time. There won't be a next time. The room is adequate. I like that the Gilfer has bathtubs but they have been painted and paint is peeling in the tubs. The cleaning staff leaves the door to the service area open so you can see mop buckets, mattresses and such. Real class. I liked their restaurant in the past but the service is the worst now. There were four or five waiters and getting their attention was difficult. They would be grouped together chatting. Orders were not served at the same time and they got the order wrong. Again, I see that the staff is not being trained.
