We've just returned from a lovely week at Villa di Monte Solare - fabulous location (helped also by amazing weather for October 25+ glorious sunshine every day!) which was a perfect base for exploring Umbria. The friendly staff made us feel very welcome and we really enjoyed the food both at breakfast and the dining room in the evening. We'll definitely be making plans for a return visit in the future!
location, location, location. 2 hours from Rome 60 minutes from Peruga and Assisi. the concierge and conciergess are knowledgable on the region and give you best advice where to go what to sea and where to eat good quality italien=umbrian cuisine...
Set high on a hilltop this is an excellent place for a relaxing break. The address makes it a little difficult to find but it was so worth the effort. Lovely villa blocks set in vines & olive groves with peace & tranquility assured. Our room was spacious and well equipped, everything we needed for our stay. The restaurant is excellent too - though very expensive compared with the area. Great base to explore Umbria & Tuscany we plan to return.
First impression; the staff speak English so it's going to be easy. (I will add that they encouraged us with our tiny bit of Italian.) The suite was fabulous and even had a jacuzzi bath. The bed was very comfortable and huge. Breakfast was a feast and the evening meals divine! Again, the staff were outstanding. Our room was kept perfectly clean and the Massage was by far the best I've had. The whole area and grounds are wonderful with walks galore. We sat by the pool a couple of times, reading and letting the world pass us by. There's a large terrace to use too. The five night break was for us to chill out and we achieved that easily. The scenery was sublime, and we relaxed. Should anyone want to know what the wifi is like, its fine, you can keep in touch with the outside world. Ditto phone signal. We will be returning, and for us that's an accolade! All in all, a fantastic experience.
The hotel is in a tranquil peaceful setting with stunning views. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The staff are the biggest asset to this hotel, every member of staff we encountered were lovely and made our stay very comfortable. If staying in the warmer months I would recommend staying in one of the rooms outside the main hotel as ours was very big with a lounge area and a lovely private terrace overlooking the valley. I would have given my review an excellent but felt that money needs to be spent on upgrading the sun loungers on the top pool along with improving changing facilities and adding a toilet. We ate in the restaurant a couple of times although the meals we had were pleasant they weren't outstanding needed a bit of refinement and it is also very expensive. I cannot fault breakfast excellent selection. If you want to explore the surrounding area a car is essential, and there are a lot of beautiful towns and countryside to see.
The hotel was even better than we expected from their webpage. The villa is decorated and furnished in a classical style. Very comfortble and the rooms are a good size. Many have fabulous views over the olive groves. The surrounding area was beautiful and we had a totally relaxed holiday. I sampled the "Dolce Vita Body Treatment" in the spa and it was worth every penny! If you are not looking to chill out, you will need a car. The villa is set in lovely grounds but is some distance away from shops etc.
We spent 6 days here on our honeymoon and had the most fantastic experience. This hotel is a real gem, located in a very peaceful and stunning part of the Umbrian countryside, approximately half an hour's drive from Perugia. The beauty of this hotel is that it feels like a private villa, rather than a big anonymous hotel, yet it is fully equipped with everything you would expect from a first class establishment. The staff is so friendly and helpful, always going the extra mile to provide advice or help whenever required. There is even a whatsapp butler service where you can message from anywhere onsite with a question or request. We chose a superior room in one of the separate buildings, a few yards away from the main hotel building. It was joyously quiet and secluded, with stunning views from our terrace out across the rolling hills and olive groves. The famous Umbrian mists in the morning are a marvel worth getting up for! Being a male couple on honeymoon, we were aware that this is still rather unusual in Italy, but the staff could not have been more welcoming and friendly, offering us a complimentary glass of bubbly on our first night and a free session at the spa. We also booked a private cookery course with Marco from the hotel's excellent restaurant, ably aided by Jennifer, who helpfully translated. We highly recommend the cookery courses, which are held in a separate beautiful converted farm building and allowed us to learn to cook a four course Umbrian meal, all of which we could confidently recreate back at home, especially since they provided helpful recipe print-outs. Eating the meal afterwards on the sunny terrace of the cookery school, replete with a bottle of local wine, was definitely a honeymoon highlight. We would also recommend Emanuela's wine tasting, which was a technical experience that we greatly enjoyed, rounded off with the opportunity to sit and enjoy the rest of the bottles! Emanuela is the hotel sommelier and her enthusiasm for Italian wines is infectious! She ably assisted us in the restaurant in choosing suitable wines for our dinner choices, all of which were reasonably priced and locally sourced. It was also highly appreciated that you could ask them to hold an unfinished bottle over until the next evening if you didn't want to finish a bottle on one night. Dinners were outstanding, served either in the traditional villa's dining rooms or outside on the terrace if weather permits. Whilst there is a main menu which we understand only changes with each season, there were also interesting daily specials to provide variety. We ate three evenings at the restaurant and were highly impressed on all three occasions with the standard and presentation of the food, as well as the friendly and relaxed attitude of the staff. Breakfast is also a delight. The buffet selection is extensive and is of high quality, especially for those who enjoy fresh breads, pastries, cakes and fruit! Eating breakfast outside was mildly challenging with the wasps, but we compromised by eating our food indoors and finishing with a lazy tea or coffee on the terrace overlooking the beautiful gardens. There are two good sized swimming pools with stunning views and pretty terraces with sunloungers, but beware that the water isn't heated, which means it's a little chilly by late September when we visited. The spa is located in a beautifully renovated little outbuilding. Although it is very comfortable, be aware that it can only really accommodate two people at a time, so booking is necessary in advance. Just one final tip. This hotel is not easy to find and the instructions on their website from Florence direction did not always match reality, at least as far as we discovered. The road didn't exist on our Satnav either, but if you can get to Colle San Paolo, it is a tiny place and the hotel is signposted from the main road. To summarise, this is a beautiful, classy place to escape from the crowds. There is ample opportunity for beautiful walks, lazing by the pool or trips to pretty hilltop or lakeside towns and we will definitely be back.
Location: Most beautiful grounds, 80 hecters of land, amazing walks from the hotel over-looking lakes, vineyards and olive trees. The perfect romantic, peaceful and remote setting. Getting around: most people had cars. We used a taxi (Euro10) to the nearest village, and then got a bus from there to Perugia (Euro10) which took an hour. If you want to travel around, best to have a car. Pools: two pools, over looking the Italian Umbrian hills. Freezing cold mid-September, but still beautiful to sit around and sun-bathe. Food: The evening meals are very expensive and small portions. Not good variety for vegetarian or vegan, but will accommodate when asked. Breakfast was great with lots of options and soya milk. Hotel: Rooms were beautiful, spacious, presidential suite had a jacuzzi Staff: Very helpful and friendly and looked after us well. Overall: beautiful and great hotel!
We enjoyed our previous stay at the Villa Monte Solare so much, that when we decided to return to the region around Lake Trasimeno, we felt that we could do no better than pay the hotel a second visit. The location was chosen originally because of the opportunity for my husband to do some long walks from the door, and the walks were a definite attraction again this time. The hotel has changed hands since our previous stay, but several members of staff were still there - including the sommelier, Manuela, who gave us such good advice on the local wines. One change from our previous visit was definitely welcome - the restaurant is now open for dinner every day, whereas previously it was closed on one evening each week. Dining outside is one of the great pleasures of being on holiday in Italy, and the sheltered area of the garden where the tables were set is most attractive. The food, the rooms, the friendly service, the lovely gardens, and the comfort of the rooms, was all has it had been on our earlier visit, and we will definitely plan to return to the Villa di Monte Solare when we next stay in the area.
We visited Villa Monte Solare 4 times over the past few months. Each time we were more enchanted. We have just got back from having the wedding of our dreams there. The venue, the staff, the hospitality all made it everything we could ask for and more. Franco, Alessio, Emanuella and the team have all been fantastic in helping us plan our wedding abroad, and make the day all we could ask for. If you're looking for a perfect, peaceful Umbrian getaway, or the perfect Villa wedding, the team at Villa Monte Solare will do their upmost for you. The personal service was the separator for us, as was the tranquility and authenticity of the location. We couldn't sing their praises more highly. With Thanks and Best wishes to the team at Villa Monte Solare - Scott & Ellie x
