Holiday Inn Express Pella2.5 out of 5.0

The room is clean but average, Staff is friendly. Breakfast is average. Nothing special. You are sure not to remember this hotel. Not for good things but also not for bad things. Just an average hotel. Just plain average.
The reason it gets 2 stars is the room, staff friendliness, pool area and breakfast were just fine. There was an event in the area and a room I could have booked the following weekend online as a pre-paid would have been $100 p/night. Directly with the hotel $180. But, due to the sporting event our rate was $250 p/night!! We were there for a memorial service and had no choice but to book it. They will discount blocks of rooms for weddings (still making a profit) and they would be full regardless due to this event. They wouldn't take an AARP discount even though that would still have been over their normal rate. This is just wrong.
Had great time room was clean. Guest services was great and helpful. Only bad thing I could say is something that's most likely no ones fault some of the rooms had to get new keys. About a half dozen of us got new keys at one time and were told if they didn't work just call the desk and they would be right down with another to get us in or fix the issue if it persisted. It did not but the willingness to make sure it was right was very appreciated.
I am a platinum member and ended up moving to a different hotel. The rooms have a musty damp smell and feel to them. House keeping is continually out of towels and so is the pool. The hotel is extremely noisy. The outside patio area consists of broken plastic furniture that is covered in black mold and two broken, dilapidated grills. Unfortunate because the property is in such a nice location.
Arrived late afternoon, hot and tired. Our rooms (along with all others in line) were not ready until after 8pm. Desk staff was extremely rude to us and others at the counter. Air conditioning was turned off in the hotel room/gym (only 1 treadmill) so it was miserable in there. Love Holiday Inn Express but will NEVER stay at this one again.
I spent one night here and never again. Woke up and killed a spider in my bed after getting 3 bites. I tried to tell the lady at check out about it but she could not even print my bill all the while babbling about how bad her morning was. Thankfully another lady showed up and knew how to print a bill.
Don't be discouraged by some reviews. We stayed here for a weekend softball tournament. The hotel was clean and our beds were comfortable. There were multiple teams staying at this hotel and I would guess it was very near capacity. Even so, it wasn't loud, our room was nice and quiet. They also did a great job accommodating us by making sure the breakfast was stocked and ready for the girls bright and early during our stay.
I am a platinum IHG member and do not recommend staying at this property. Gives you the feel that it used to be an old nursing home. Room had windows that were broken open. Decor is outdated. Away from all the cute shops and restaurants in Pella. Not up to typical IHG standards.
I'm a road warrior about 70 nights per year. Holiday Inn Express's are a good choice because you know what your going to get, but this one is showing its age. Beds are getting lumpy, furniture is outdated, needs paint and TLC everywhere. The staff is friend and helpful and the managers daily reception is very nice touch. They got rid of the snack machine so my midnight craving went unfulfilled. Probably a good thing really. I would say they are ready for an upgrade, but they are doing their best with what they have to offer a comfortable stay.
We visited in early December and found that several families were celebrating Christmas early at the motel. Lots of little children around. Our rooms were on the second floor and were both comfortable and quiet. We drove into Pella (several miles away) for dinner and to visit the stores -- especially the wonderful Jaarsma and Vander Ploeg Bakeries. The community was decorated for Christmas and carols were playing in the downtown area creating a very festive feeling. It snowed the first night and the children and teenagers spent the morning building a snowman while we watched from the breakfast area. They all seemed to be having a wonderful time and we enjoyed watching. A very comfortable facility -- I would stay here again.
