We arrived around 8pm after a flight up from Lima and were warmly welcomed at reception. A quick check in with a very helpful young man taking us up to our room. It was big and clean with a balcony overlooking the plaza. We felt like we were back at Raffles hotel Singapore. We had a king bed and it was also very quiet. A good central location surrounded by restaurants souvenir shops and close to a very good supermarket. We only stayed for 2 nights which we both really enjoyed before moving on to Airbnb.
Specifics: Seven nights and six days in a “Cuarto” room with a balcony overlooking Plaza Herrera. Pros: Lots of them. First things first: this is aesthetically a beautiful property. High ceilings, light and airy vibe. Open central courtyard with an attached library, a floor above this holds the small rooftop pool. My room was excellent and for once matched the description on the website: large king bed with firm mattress and soft sheets, clean bathroom with a rain shower, precise temperature control (important in Panama, trust me), functional amenities. The rooftop pool was open 24/7 and usually empty, an enjoyable way to end the night. Main dining room and bar were very convenient and the food had enough local influence for me to make multiple trips. Wi-fi worked well for the duration of my visit. Good communication from the concierge desk. Service was gracious to a fault with some quirks (see below). Also… superb location, right in the middle of Casco Viejo. Near museums, restaurants, etc. Cons: A few. Check-in was a bit clunky, no one greeted me at the entrance and while I certainly am not above carrying my own bags to my room there was no offer to do so from the staff. Turndown service was missed a couple nights although overall housekeeping did a great job cleaning. Some service issues at the bar and restaurant with the language barrier, although again everyone’s English was better than my Spanish. Summary: An overall positive stay with an acceptable price. The hotel easily met my two most important metrics: it was worth the cost and I would definitely stay again if in town.
Walking into this hotel is like falling into a Hemingway novel. The architecture and design is complete eye candy and is seamlessly integrated into the surrounding area. Loved having coffee at Unido and lunch there, just to bask in the surroundings. Fabulous room with a double head rain shower with great water pressure, a claw foot tub, and balcony overlooking the square, perfect for relaxing and escaping the heat of the day. Location could not be better for exploring Casco Viejo and witnessing its transformation from ruins to world class historic city treasure. Thank you, ATH, for the perfect pampered getaway!
Our stay at the American Trade Hotel was amazing. We we’re surprised at how old it was yet updated beautifully. Loved the hard wood floors. The room was large and very clean and the bed was very comfortable. The views were amazing as you could see so much of the old district. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast was delicious. We will definitely be staying here again.
We wanted to stay in Casco Viejo and experience the old world charm. ATH has good reviews and looked nice. We got a corner room for the views. The room was spacious , clean and comfortable. ATH is in a good location in Casco Viejo too. That’s about all the good things we experienced. When we arrived at 10pm, there we no staff to welcome us at the door and help with luggage. The check in was clinical , business like. No offer to help with luggage or show us our room. No town map was given too , no suggestions for dining options or Tour attractions . It was akin checking into a hostel! There were no complimentary water bottles in the room that night so I used the mini bar mineral water. Next day I explained to the counter staff- he said the complimentary bottles are placed in rooms around 6pm and since we hadn’t checked in at that time, no bottles were given! What a ridiculous reason... and he made no effort to waive the charge and apologise. We didn’t eat at teh restaurant but it seemed busy during meal times. The building is nice , lovely tiled floor ,an old lift, large mirrors in the lobby etc.. but the staff arrive falls far short . For the price of the room , this was unacceptable . When we checked out, the staff was nicer and he waived the mini bar charge. I doubt I will stay here again- overpriced , poor staff service . Disappointing indeed
The hotel is in a very nice central location, a lot of money has been spent on refurbishing it. On our arrival we checked in and left for a tour of the city. Our bags were left unattended and unidentified in the public foyer area for three hours until our return. No apology until I insisted on speaking to the manager. The rooms are spacious, the room we had, had an erratic on off dribble for a shower. Breakfast in the morning was poor, packet juice and bitter coffee. With breakfast you could either have a glass of juice or some fruit. If you had both it was three dollars and twenty one cents for one small glass of juice. For a high end hotel the staff did not have any interest in what the customer needed. We stayed a second night before flying home. On our bed we found a warning of a noisy wedding and two sets of ear plugs. Had I known in advance I would have stayed closer to the airport and got more sleep. We had what was called a take away breakfast. A glass of juice in an unsealed container, a pot of yoghurt and two small glass jars of preserves a tiny container of muesli and a banana. The manageress was very helpful. The rest of the staff need to be thoroughly trained in the idea of professional customer service and appearance. There are several other hotels in the area. I would suggest trying one of those.
We had a great stay at American Trade Hotel. Reception staff are excellent. Rooms are comfortable and well appointed. We had a 4th floor room overlooking the square and out to the water. It was very nice, some rooms have porches, ours did not, but it was too hot anyway. The pool is nice for cooling off, not for swimming. Breakfast is a small buffet, adequate selection, tasty. Coffee is very strong! Wifi is included. Matthew at reception is very helpful, sharing his favorite sites in the area and offering great restaurant suggestions.
Nice location in the old town. Architecture charming. Room amenities were fine. Unfortunately we were only staying one night with an early flight the next day. Upon checking in they seemed hassled. No one informed us there was a night club (or disco) right outside our second floor room. Upon calling late that night, the front desk said they had heard several complaints and they "were taking care of it". They were obviously blowing us off as it went on unabated. The next morning the front desk was unapologetic and claimed to be without a manager and "all out of comment cards". An offer of another room, earplugs, or even a warning when checking in would have been the least they could have done. This is priced like a luxury hotel but without the service.
The building is beautiful. The rooms are large and beds are comfortable. The shower was amazing. Sure, Panama City has large modern hotels but anywhere has that. Get a feel for the culture and style of the old city. The service was wonderful, the rooms were clean, and the location cannot be beaten. I cannot say enough good things about this hotel and would come back in a heartbeat.
It ended up with us coming everyday of our stay, either for brekkie or lunch or dinner. Service was impeccable and the quality of the food simply delicious. We have recommended it to several other people.
