Most of the common areas of the hotel were under renovation and this was undisclosed when we booked. We were notified a week before the trip, at a time when it was too late to find alternate accommodations. Additionally, they only told us about lobby renovations when we called. They didn’t tell us in the belated notice that fire pit and spa would be closed. They also said on thwir website and in a letter when we arrived there would be daily oyster shucking classes at 5pm and we were told during our stay that they were canceled.
Great property. Be aware that $53.33 resort fee will be added to your bill, quite steep.
The staff were all very welcoming and friendly. And with only thirty something rooms they treat you like royalty! The rooms, sauna, exercise room and saltwater pool we're all spotless. And I'd highly recommend the couples massage.
Check in was very odd, awkward and unorganized. We stayed in a Captain's Suite that was directly beneath the roof bar. Luckily, the weather prevented the bar from opening, as if it were opened, the noise would have been tremendous. I wonder, did our booking through Orbitz contribute to the questionable room assignment? I've noticed this trend of less than optimum room assignments when booking with third party vendors. Folks should consider if their savings are worth more than the less than perfect room assignments...this is the last time I use such a service, unless Orbitz can assure consumers (me) they will be treated as if they are booking directly...$800 / night is ALOT to pay for a room the property wouldn't sell to direct booking customers!!! Buyer beware.
We have been coming to Newport for years and this is our first time in this hotel and it is now one of our favorites. The hotel was originally built by the Vanderbilt's son Alfred as his home. Plusses include elegant historical building, very attentive staff, great location (central yet hidden and quiet), free parking, large cheerful rooms that are well appointed, attractive common areas, indoor pool and outdoor pool, roof top deck, good newspaper selection. Our room looked over the town towards the water. The feeling of post Victorian splendor in a thoroughly contemporary environment. Of course you pay for the privilege but I'd say it is a good value...a special place. This and the Ivy Lodge are currently our 2 favorite places to stay in Newport (but we haven't yet tried them all). We'll be back.
What most hotels spend in the lobby the Vanderbilt Grace put into their room renovations. This is definitely a boutique hotel not a big chain hotel. In that respect some amenities are limited although there are small in door and out door pools. The staff could not have beeen more pleasant. Nice rooftop bar and views. Close to all the action on Thame street but far enough to escape the crowds. It was a little pricey but nice suites. If it's important to you, any size dogs are permissible for a fee. This is probably going to be our mainstay when we're in Newport. Do not miss Fluke restaurant on the wharf.
The hotel was furnished a little generic for the splendor and the price. Why the help is most pleasant they lack a professional hospitality of an excellent concierge at the Ritz or even an Omni. Our internet was far more informative.
I love this hotel. We stay here once a year and they are always friendly, helpful and go out of their way to make us happy.
Good location. Good service. take Bus 14 to go to Providence Airport. The hotel is only 5 mins walk to go But 14 station.

Dear Tipousse, I am sorry to learn you felt you had a less than desirable room allocation. I can assure you that we do not look at the booking source when allocating rooms, as we value all our guests. I am sorry the weather did not cooperate on your stay either as Newport in the sunshine is a lot more fun. Thank you for sharing your feedback, we do appreciate hearing what our guests experience is and we do hope you will consider us for a future visit to Newport. Sincerely, Alice Bouman General Manager
