As a New Yorker, I must admit a strong biased to Southampton, but Nantucket is charming. The White Elephant as an extremely nice hotel, we chose to stay in one of the two bedroom Residences - configured as a small cottage with two distinct bedrooms and a modest sized shared living space (inclusive of refrigerator/freezer, meal table, ample closet space for food, etc - the only thing missing was a stove for heating food). Overall, I found our "residence" lovely, but a bit small and just adequate enough for a 4 night stay. The White Elephant Residences combine all the amenities of the hotel with the more livable attributes of a summer cottage. The White Elephant's proximity to town is a game changer as our residence did not come with any food or beverages (except water and espresso) thus shopping, walking to restaurants, and just plain site seeing were easy to accomplish without a car. Ultimately, it all comes down to people, and White Elephant's staff was, for the most part very strong. Excellent leadership by Matt, the superb front desk manager, as well as his capable team, in particular Pete, who drove me to the hospital when I get a some coarse Nantucket sand stuck in my eye at the beach... but that's a whole other story.
This historic and charming hotel is located on Easton Street in Nantucket village. Children's Beach and Brant Point Lighthouse is a short walk from the hotel's main building. Main building has wraparound porch with rocking chairs and other outdoor furniture. Views of Nantucket Harbor from the hotel's main building are stunning. Hotel and concierge staff were consistently polite, friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. Guest suite located in the main building was clean and functional, however the guest room bathroom was a bit small in size and cramped. Please be advised, no clocks are featured in guest rooms. Little traffic noise from the street side however, boat whistles/horns can be heard from the harbor at all times. Fitness facility was clean and equipment functional. Spa located on-site. The breakfast buffet was of excellent quality and good variety. Several shopping and dining establishments are available in Nantucket within walking distance of the hotel's main building. A vehicle, bicycle, or other transportation is recommended to visit the island's other villages. Hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to/from Nantucket Airport, Hy-Line, and Steam Ship Authority. Hotel offers complimentary bicycles, beach umbrellas, chairs, towels as well as transportation to many local attractions and dining establishments. Will visit this hotel again when visiting Nantucket in the future.
Beautiful grounds although slightly distant from the center of town. Food and service was excellent with decent rooms. I’d highly recommend the homemade ice cream nearby. I noticed a lot of families - perfect choice.
I love the White Elephant and I love Nantucket. I stayed in room 221 for the nights of 3 & 4 June 2019. The hotel is smart and cool and my room was lovely. It was very spacious with a sofa and arm chair in a nice sitting area away from the bed. I had a deck which overlooked a salt pond and was a lovely place to sit in the sunshine. The White Elephant is very well located, close to the harbour but the hotel will pick you up from the ferry and only about 5 minutes walk from The Whaling Museum. It is also a couple of minutes away from Children's Beach. I had breakfast as part of my package and that was delicious and ate from room service both nights. Lobster roll and Lobster Mac & Cheese were both very good and nicely served. The staff in the hotel were all great, really helpful, and a special thank you to the lady on reception who noticed my ferry time had changed. It saved me some stress on check out day. I can't wait to come back to the hotel and Nantucket.
We just spent several days at the White Elephant. Had a great time on the island and at the hotel. The staff was very friendly and helpful at all hours of the day and night. The food for breakfast and lunch was great and even eating at the bar was worth it. This is a pricey hotel but you just can't beat the location or the views from the room. We would stay here again for sure.
We absolutely loved our experience at The White Elephant. We attended the Nantucket Conference which was held ,at various times, on the property. The luxury of the room was so thoughtful. The staff were intentionally friendly and gracious . The room was uber plush. They attended to every request with a response of ‘of course’. The grounds and water views are enchanting . We will absolutely be back. Great appreciation .
The room was outstanding! The most amenities of any place we've stayed. If we needed it, it was there. Room service staff and food was exceptional. Management was extremely helpful. I wrote to them before we left home, because of my husband's special needs, I was immediately contacted and all questions were answered with concern and respect. Beautiful place, in every way
Was outstanding with outstanding service cleanliness quality luxury with a great view of the harbor; staff goes out of the way to please; very highly recommended prices reasonable considering what you're receiving. Will definitely return top of my list
The cottages were spectacular. 2 en-suite bedrooms, 2 sitting areas and a fully equipped kitchen. Located on a tree lined street they are walking distance from the hotel, numerous restaurants and the dock with assorted shops and the ferry. The rooms are cozy and beautifully decorated. I highly recommend the White Elephant to anyone going to Nantucket.
i've been spending a summer week or 2 on nantucket for many years starting in the early '80s. initially, i rented a few different homes around the island with friends, and one summer stayed at a very nice B&B in town. but recently i've been staying at the white elephant; this past summer was my sixth visit. "wow!" is the best way to sum things up. the view of the harbor from the 2nd floor 'veranda' rooms is quintessential nantucket. the hotel grounds are gorgeous. the staff go well above & beyond to keep guests happy. superb breakfasts under the outdoor awning in morning sunlight. this last trip, we had late lunch a couple of times at a table on the grass with friends.... yippy-fantastic! our room was perfect; bed, furnishings, AC (needed only occasionally), and shower completely beyond reproach. an easy stroll to town, super convenient private parking for longer excursions in the car. you really don't want to skip the ride up the harbor on the hotel's classy boat for lunch at the wauwinet!.... but reserve this at least a month ahead of time because -- no surprise -- they're fully booked well in advance. (we had such a swell time at the lunch this past summer that we didn't want to leave -- skipped the return boat ride & grabbed a taxi back to town.) just plopping down on one of the many lawn loungers, steps from the harbor... it truly doesn't get any better. sunday buffet brunch was way over the top! port and cheese mid-afternoon every day.... the W.E simply doesn't miss a beat! pricey.... and absolutely worth every penny for us. i can't imagine how there could be a nicer place for a couple to stay on the island. to the management and staff at the W.E.... please don't ever change!
