We stayed when we visited for our honeymoon and decided to downgrade our accommodation in Monteverde to get a better hotel in Manuel Antonio. The lodge reminded me of a ski resort with its wood furnishings and general look. The reception was friendly and allocated us our room. Our room was average at best.It was pretty dark but spacious with two double beds. Our bed of choice that night had a few stains on it but the other bed was fine. The carpet was very worn and ruffled in between the beds. We had a big bay window instead of a balcony which was annoying as the views we had seen in our brochure certainly was not what we got...it did its job though and we were comfortable enough. The bathroom was a bit strange as the only window was onto the hallway of the hotel, so everyone could hear you shower etc and you could hear and almost see them. The walls were pretty thin also and on several occasions, we were woken by the snoring of the gentleman next door. The bed was comfy enough but they had old worn blankets underneath the initial sheet which wasn't great. The pillows were awful...absolutely awful, like something you get in a hospital with the waterproof cover. The breakfast wasn't great either and we skipped it a few days. We ended up having a bit of downtime here and to our disappointment, there was no pool! The hotel is also a good bit out of the town and you require a taxi to get everywhere which was $10 a go, no matter where you went. We did end up walking a few times to save cash as we couldn't justify it. I would recommend a car if you do stay here. all in all, I would not stay here again and spend that little bit extra to get somewhere nicer and nearer town.
Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and was very happy our tour company chose this hotel. It is Eco friendly with excellent soap products that are available to purchase. The staff were professional and helpful. The rooms were large with enormous picture windows that looked out towards Monteverde. There was a sitting area to enjoy the view. Beds were comfortable with plenty of blankets for chilly nights. Very clean and well maintained. The food was excellent for dinner and the breakfast was the best I have experienced so far in Costa Rica! The rooms can be a bit of a hike up a path but it gets you ready for walking in the forest!
We stayed at the Trapp Family Lodge in the Monteverde area as part of our tour with Swiss Travel, the beds were really comfortable, the room was huge and we had the best view ! It is family owned and is spotless, they provide lush organic toiletries. It has a little bar and restaurant but you can always venture into St Elena town for the price of about £7 each way in a taxi.We knew that there are Howler monkeys in the trees because we heard them calling but we didn't see any . Just up the road about 15 minutes walk towards the cloud forest is a small cafe called Hummingbird, here they have several nectar feeders .which attract lots of different Humming Birds. We also saw a Coati which was playing in the trees and was the size of a badger!
Handy place to stay for the cloud forest even on a cloudless day. Hotel trumps its green credentials but has rather dated decor and draughty rooms. Limited dining of good quality but breakfast poor. Easy trip into the village by bus or taxi, walkable but steep and no footpath.
We had a hard time operating our bedroom's windows. It had wood paneling, and was very dark! We had a hard time looking at our map in order to plan for the next day's travel and we found ourselves having to prop our night stand lights on the bed's headboard! The hotel is set quite high. We visited in March, and it was VERY windy outside, which made it difficult to sleep. This establishment is called a "hotel" so we were expecting to have a coffee maker and a fridge, which they did not provide.
We had a very nice room with great views and a lovely seating area in the window where we could enjoy the surroundings. It was quite dark and a little chilly though, but enjoyed wrapping up in the thick blankets provided. Staff were very friendly and personal and happy to help book trips etc. We ate at the restaurant twice for lunch and dinner and both were delicious. Breakfast in the upper restaurant was also good The organic toiletries provided was a nice touch Only real downside was that there were no facilities in the room to make a drink, though could be ordered from the bar and taken back. Also not enough outside seating to enjoy the fresh air and sunshine.
The lodge is located on the road from Santa Elena to the Monteverde Reserve. Ideally you should have a car as it is s bit remote but nicely located with good views. Everything is relaxed and quiet. The rooms are spacious in a kind of mountain lodge style. The breakfast buffet offers all you need and is served in a dedicated small restaurant. Wifi works excellent in the rooms and public places. All in all good value for money.
Rooms spacious and clean although dark and dingy. Total lack of facilities in our superior room with no tea or coffee facilities. Garden hardly any seating facilities to enjoy the sun and gardens again very poor. Any drinks had to be carried up the long ramp to the garden. Service very poor asked for tea to take to our room had to carry a trsy down 15 stairs from the restaurant and when i dropped a cup still no help. Breakfast poor choice not the best and it was a fair way from the reception. Staff not the most helpful. Would we stay here again certainly not couldn't even see a manager to raise our concerns
We had a very nice mountain view room. It was large, nicely furnished, and had a comfortable king size bed. There were a few downsides to the room though. There was no fridge, or anywhere to hang wet clothes (and you will have wet clothes around here). It's a bit of a walk up the hill to get to the room, and in the rain and wind we experienced, it got to be a bit of a chore. Staff were friendly and helpful and we had no issues with check-in or check-out. The restaurant inside the main lodge was a bit hit and miss. I had a terrible beef tenderloin and a completely undercooked sea bass (raw in the middle). Wine selection was very limited. But we had a couple of decent meals too, so like I said - hit or miss. The seperate breakfast restaurant was about the same. It's what you would expect with this kind of place. It got the job done. Overall this hotel was a positive experience. It's a nice place that tries hard. Be prepared though because it can be extremely windy, rainy and cold up here in the mountains of Monteverde. Our windows rattled both nights we were here from the strong winds.
Spent three nights here. The grounds are very pretty. The hotel staff was very helpful. There are three buildings and two are an uphill walk from the main reception+restaurant area. The rooms are large and the beds are comfortable. The only negative is that the pillows are hard. On site restaurant is very good for lunch or dinner. The grilled chicken was easily the best in Costa Rica. Staff was very good. Prices were pretty fair for the food quality. One side note is that while this hotel is closest to the Monteverde Reserve, that means it is up in the clouds. Cloudy and windy here while it is sunny in “downtown” Monteverde.
