Montenegro wasn't my favorite destination in Europe. Avala was clearly one of the best hotels in Budva but we still weren't overly impressed. The hotel is steps from the old city, so that was perfect. But the room was dark and dreary. We had a balcony with partial water view, but really it was just the back of the hotel and you could see the water inlet. On our last night ALL of the electricity in Budva went out. Our hotel and one other that we could see were blessed with generators so we were thankful for that. We were not overly impressed with the beach. Trying to walk to the shower to rinse off was a nightmare for you feet. Our first day the water was dirty, but the second day it was a little clearer. We also happened to arrive on the national day of Montenegro. We weren't aware and were very disappointed no one told us, as we would have loved to celebrate with the locals. It wasn't until we were sitting on our balcony and heard fireworks that we found out. The fireworks were set off from the Avala dock so I'm not sure why no one would have told us upon check-in. We only caught the last 2 minutes so that was disappointing. We also were there on our honeymoon and although something extra would have been nice, just acknowledgment would have worked. This was the only hotel across 4 countries that did not address us.
My husband and I stayed at the avala hotel for our anniversary and we were very disappointed. On arrival, we were greeted by two bored looking receptionists, who spoke in monotone voices and didn't smile or make eye contact. We certainly weren't given the pleasant, welcome reception that we have previously received in other hotels in Montenegro. We were shown to our sea view room which was filthy. The shower walls were stained with shampoo/shower gel from the previous occupants, the floor hadn't been hovered, everything was covered in dust and hair, there were hairs in the bed, smears on the windows and the room in general was in desperate need of decorating. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. I'm certainly not a clean freak, but cleanliness should be a necessity in any hotel, especially when guest pay a premium to stay there. We complained to the hotel manager who apologised, claiming that the poor hygiene was due to a "large turnover in cleaners" and that "the cleaners didn't have a detergent strong enough to clean the tiles". Although, I wiped the stains off in front of him easily with my fingers!? We were upgraded to a huge suite on the top floor of the hotel and were very grateful. Then on the first night, due to the location of the room, we were kept awake by loud music coming from the hotel and the local bars. Once again, we asked to be moved as we couldn't face another sleepless night. Thankfully, We were then moved to another suite further along the corridor which was away from the music and finally, we could sleep. The room was huge and comfortable, with a nice view of the sea. The hotel is in a good location, next to the old town (which is the nicest part of budva) and the pretty port where local fishermen sell fresh fish on the seafront. Further along the seafront, the area becomes quite tacky with rusty children's playgrounds and lots of broken beach furniture littered about the place. It's a real shame, as the area has potential to be really lovely if only it was cleaned up. Safety obviously isn't a huge concern, as we spotted loose cables across walkways and broken pavements are very common. The food in the hotel was disappointing and the restaurant was not clean. We even saw one of the staff wiping the crumbs from a dirty table directly onto the floor! We ate there once. Even though we had paid for half board. The pool area I imagine, was once very lovely. The pool is on a platform and surrounded by glass panels that overlook the beach. But as with the rest of the hotel, has been left to rot. The mattresses covering the loungers were old, stained and faded, the towels grey and stringy, mosaic tiles were missing from the pool walls and the water was dirty. I'm pleased that I visited budva, as parts of it were quaint and lovely, but I certainly wouldn't recommend the hotel that we stayed in. The Hemingway looks lovely! The Avala needs a massive refurbishment. Not only would this create a much nicer place for guests to stay, it would boost staff morale. I imagine that with the quality of the facilities at the moment, there are many complaints.
Had I really good stay at this hotel, and honestly the only bad thing is the food. It's not really bad, it's just not really good. So if you can book this hotel without the all inclusive part, it might be better. There are so many amazing restaurants right outside, for cheap, so we eat out all the time. The pool is amazing and so is the beach. Spa is great with good prices.
Ok sorry to dissappoint the complainers but we have not encountered any of the negatives. The young lady who checked us in was very proffessional and helpful and the young man who showed us to our room made sure we knew how everything worked and that we were completly happy with the room before we left. So far we have had dinner and breakfast and were happy with both. I dont usually review until im home but i do feel some of the recent comments have been unfairly negative
We stayed at Avala Resort & Villas for 7 days. They staff was amazing and very helpful. The pool area was clean and there was a very chill and nice atmosphere. Of course it was not a peak season - stayed at the end of April. The room was nice, clean and very big. We took a room with a seaview and it's totally worth the money, the view to the sea is amazing. One negative thing - we asked from reception several times (3 or 4 times) that we want to our balcony cushions that we can enjoy our balcony and sit there. My sister and her husband stay in the other room and they had the cushions at the balcony. The reception give us every time different reply - yes, we deliver the cushions. Nothing. No beacause it's not the peak season they do not deliver them. When we said that in the other room they have the cushions they promise deliver to us too. Again nothing. And day after day the same thing. Really ridiculous. The hotels location was great. Near By Budva Old Town and outside the hotel there are plenty of good restaurants - for example good choice is Regina, near by harbour. Lots of shops as well in walking distance. Breakfast was amazing and plentiful, a huge buffet breakfast. Special thank You to Avala Spa staff - Ivana nad Vuko, You're lovely and very welcoming. And last but not least - concierge Vadim Magilevskii - thank You so much for being so lovely, and for helping to make our holiday in Montenegro so enjoyable - our best from Finland & Estonia.
Stayed there for 3 nights in September. Nice big room. Problem, the stone floor looks good, but apparently cannot be cleaned completely. The hairdryer in the bathroom only puts out cold air. Still waiting for its replacement after I left. Breakfast good. Coffee undrinkable. You get it, very nice place with faults that take away from full enjoyment.
Good location, spacious rooms, good breakfast, people in other rooms in villas complaining about difficulties in getting to the room have stairs and difficult to lift suitcases high, I lacked a kettle for coffee in the room, bathroom is very high and the Zahar does not slip or hit the knee when you enter it, A very good shower for my taste. All in all a nice and good hospitality.
This hotel is right in the centre of Budva so it is very convenient for all attractions . It is a spacious hotel although some of the facilities were closed at the beginning of September. The decor is a bit oppressive as there is a lot of dark slate throughout and dark wood included. The rooms are OK but the wardrobe and units are not really suitable for two single ladies sharing. There are no drawers in the units. The buffet is excellent. The infinity pool looks fantastic but it is absolutely freezing and there are no depth markings. There are two sets of steps neither of which is marked at the edges which is a bit dangerous. You have to wear a plastic colour coded wristband throughout your stay.
We were in one of the Villas which are absolutely amazing, two floors, 3 bathrooms and every amenity you need. The most amazing view I have ever had in a hotel over the beach and old town/citadel. Reasonably priced bar, really great selection at breakfast and facilities were really good too, especially the indoor pool and gym. I would definitely stay here again.
We arrived here to a very nice welcome from the staff at reception, who were most helpful,at all times. Sadly, the following day,we had a family bereavement, and had to make arrangements to return home.Milka,at reception, was outstanding, with her concern and helpfulness, as was Melissa. ( In all our time at reception, we only saw extreme curtesy and and helpfulness, when the staff were dealing with everyone,so I think people who complain about the staff are wrong,or natural complainers! ) We retuned after two days, to continue our holiday and were given our same lovely room, which we had been told would be waiting for us. We were sympathised with and made so welcome. We were on a B & B basis for our holiday but ate a couple of times in the evening,in the hotel dining room. We could choose from the a la carte menu or have anything we wanted, from an extensive buffet. My husband is a coeliac and the manageress asked the chef to tell him everything that had gluten in it beforehand. He had a wonderful selection! The hotel is in a fabulous location, overlooking the sea and has it's own private stretch of beach and also both lovely indoor and outdoor pools. So great to hear the waves lapping when going to sleep, and no noise! Avala is only a few hundred yards from Budva's old town, with great restaurants all around. The hotel has all the facilities, a spa, gym, etc and without fail, every single member of staff treated us with unfailing curtesy and with good humour and smiles....in English! I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who wants a relaxing holiday,in lovely surroundings, with attentive staff. Well done Avala...we will return!
