Ended our camping holiday with a night at the grand. Lovely room, helpful and friendly staff and comfortable premises. Location ideal for shopping and dining. Essy access if travellin by publuc transport as well. Places of interest to see all in comfortable walking distance from this hotel.
There is no disputing that this hotel sits in a great location, which for an evening out is just great. And there is no disputing that this hotel is cheap BUT it's also in need of some major TLC. We stayed here on our way from Tanunda to Melbourne and just for one night. Fittings in the room were so old they had yellowed with age, the wardrobe doors were badly scored and had black scuff marks. The bathroom had a nice big walk in shower, and plenty of toiletries but you couldn't open the door when the shower mat was down as it caught underneath it, half an inch higher and there wouldn't have been a problem. Alternate tiles on the floor were white gloss making for an ice rink as you dashed soaking wet for the mat. Our room, 16, seemed to be above the restaurant cooking vent and so when we returned from dinner, the room smelt like a kitchen. At around 06:00 am we were awakened to the sound of either a delivery or collection directly below us of what sounded like metal beer drums. Now awake, we decided to set out early for Melbourne and so showered and headed down for an early breakfast. The breakfast room was odd, everything clad in some strange stretchy white material but the buffet breakfast was varied with a good cup of coffee. On our floor at least, there were the sounds of some room renovations taking place, so maybe that facelift is on the way.
Self rated 4 star? Maybe it was the room we were given...a good size with a separate lounge however, despite being on the gardens - which were lovely - the carpet was very shabby and lifting in places. Neat tho' a spider web here, a sprinkling of dust there. Little things missing like a lamp in the tv area; an electric blanket for the cold (we visited Winter); a glass in the bathroom. We paid around $220 per night for the romantic package and after staying, it seemed about $50 too much. Our champagne and "fruit platter" did not arrive (staff kindly packed a plastic container of fruit and a bottle of champagne to go the next morning). Breakfast was very, very plain (think cornflakes and bowls of fruit); newspapers in the breakfast room were one and two days old. All the staff were lovely, however, it felt like there were 3 people running the whole place (for example, our champagne didn't arrived as the person was running chores and one harrassed staff meber on breakfast to cover everything). We were told they did have new rooms so perhaps if you stayed in one of those, it might all feel a bit more "sparkly" and a bit less Melbourne-in-the-1960s. Oh yes....we stayed here to go to Stefanos and I must say the location was perfect (right above the restaurant) and also the river across the road and near to the Mall too.
We only stayed for one night but we could happily have stayed longer in this central foodie location. we arrived late but everything was handled well and there was free parking very close to the property. Unfortunately the air conditioner didn't work in our room so they moved us to another room which was much nicer and we were very happy with that. The complimentary breakfast was plentiful in the dining room downstairs with very good service. We will definitely be back.
We stayed here for 4 nights, great price with Wotif, included a wonderful breakfast each morning, room was upgraded, quite large, nice comfortable bed, great bathroom, shower facility, front of house staff very helpful and cheerful, dinning room staff very good, breakfast was excellent, thanks to all. Position of the Hotel was great, opposite the wonderful gardens, and river bank area, wonderful early morning walks, a bit chilly, at 2 to 4 degrees, with a Container Coffee shop, open 7.30am, very good. All takeaway eating, restaurants, bars, coffee shops and bakeries, within walking distance, alongside the hotel, parking across the road, included. All in all for an older Hotel, very good, lovely garden area within the grounds, nice to just sit and relax. Given the great deal we had, will be back next year, thanks to all the lovely staff.
This is a good hotel. Room was certainly comfortable and adequately fitted out. Carolyn would have appreciated an electric blanket. Pity the shower door in our room needed careful lifting into place to close it properly, but this is a quibble not a complaint. Breakfast was fine (a real coffee would have been nice rather than the urn of pre-made, but being Melbourne people we have ridiculously high standards). The home-made muffins were a fluffy and flavoursome delight and the home-made marmalade was a lovely touch. Service was friendly and competent. Position was great for a range of restaurants, some of which are connected to the Hotel. The meal we had in Stefano's was terrific - a great and memorable night.
This place is in the middle of everything you might want to do in Mildura, the rooms are basic though comfortable. An easy walk to most things in town and along the riverfront which is fabulous after a multi million dollar makeover. It can be a bit noisy around the rooms in the evening when people are heading back to their rooms at night, though you have the added bonus of being in the same building as Stefanos and The Spanish Grill so you don't have to leave the building at night, just head downstairs to wonderful food, wine & staff who work across venues which tells us that they must look after good people and be a good employer.
Having read the myriad poor reviews, I'm not sure there's much I can add. Given the amount of negative feedback, management doesn't seem to be listening. I was in a windowless room at the end of a long passage. The queen bed was quite comfortable, but I was freezing the whole time I was there. The heater in my room didn't work. I reported this to Reception, who said they would send a technician while I dined at Stefano's Restaurant, with a promise to place a small blow heater in my room if there were any repair issues. When I came back to my room, it was freezing. The split system was blowing out cold air. No portable heater to be found! I was too tired to complain. The meeting room we booked for two days was also freezing. We were told the temperature couldn't be altered. So they bought into two tiny, noisy blow heaters. They could turn their a/c off and spend the savings on refurbishing this tired old building. The bathroom was very spacious with plenty of bench space. A small plus which helped to overlook the very long black hair which sat on the floor for 3 days. (I'm blonde). Oh, and the remote for the TV didn't work. I passed on all this feedback to the reception staff, who I have to say were very pleasant and professional.
Service was excellent. Breakfast was lovely. Great location. Rooms need new curtains and ceiling needs painting. However the rooms were very clean. It was the second time my family stayed there and we would definitely stay there again.
The grand hotel?? May have been in the 80's and 90's but the rooms were sooooooo dated and tired! Looked like nothing was don't to the room since forever ago, bathroom however was renovated, shower pressure was the bestest I've ever had, nearly blew me over, but the mould on all the silicone that lined the whole shower, umm, not cool.
