Alto Hotel on Bourke

We stayed at the Alto for one night with my family of four - 2 adults, 2 kids. We had a two bedroom suite, which was lovely. Very clean, modern, 2 bathrooms, kitchen including full size fridge, clothes washer, and a lounge sit area separate to the bedrooms. Location is perfect for access to Etihad Stadium, Spencer Street shopping, and all things central to the CBD. Trams right outside the door too. Staff were friendly, and helpful. My only minor issue was the master bed was way too soft, and the sheets were a little noisy when you moved around. But certainly wouldn't stop me from staying here again. It was the perfect accommodation for a family.

We never stay in hotels ..except when we are I MELBOURNE..and a stay at Alto A super friendly ,warm and welcoming place ..that feels like home. Thanks to Gary and his team ...they really understand the meaning of hospitality..from the warm and easy. Check in, to the welcome drinks and chat even arranging our restaurant selection.thankyouNd see you again

From the warm welcome by Charlie to the small but spotless and well thought out rooms, this apartment met all our needs. This is a lovely hotel. One of the staff said it was a lovely place to work too. Don’t miss the manager’s happy hour. Wine, snacks, a lolly bar and a truly happy, convivial buzz. Highly recommended if you want to avoid highly priced, impersonal, big hotels. The Alto is a gem.

This is a wonderful, extremely comfortable, small hotel very close to Southern Cross station and thus the Skybus from the airport. So very handy when your flight gets in late at night. The staff are always so welcoming whatever the hour. The rooms are spotless and well appointed and the beds are marvellously comfortable. It may be a bit noisy outside but with the windows closed and the blinds down, it is very peaceful.

This friendly hotel is central but the room was quiet and air-conditioned. There is a fridge in the room. It is just a short walk from the Southern Cross Station and airport Skybus. Ideal for a short stay.

Our stay in Melbourne couldn't have been better thanks to the Alto. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and very helpful. We booked a 2 bedroom unit at the Alto. The unit was roomy and had all we required. Clean, modern and well equipped. The hotel is located in a good area close to everything, trains, trams, buses, taxis etc. Its an easy walk to the center of the business area but as trams are free in the city area it easy to go most places quickly. We arrived early in Melbourne and the staff stored our bags for us so we could enjoy the day with out worrying about them. When we arrived back at the hotel in the late afternoon our bags were in our room all ready for us.On the day we checked out our flight was late in the afternoon so again the staff stored our bags for us until we were ready to go to the airport. Throughout our stay the staff were at all times helpful, very pleasant to deal with and so friendly. Breakfast was good but it can be a bit busy depending time. Very happy with our stay. If we go back to Melbourne in the future we will definitely stay at The Alto.

I really wanted to like this room and hotel. The arrival was good. Welcoming staff. The small lift and stairs lead you to believe what's coming. It reminded me of a Paris hotel but without the Parisian lifestyle Once in the room ( the key cards don't work that well) it is small noisy and the bathroom reminds me a little of a caravan. Value for money is ok. Beds comfortable and TV options good Just backs on your a busy thoroughfare and trams out front can be heard Breakfast needs to start earlier than 7 also

Third time I've stayed here in the past two years. I love this place. It feels like coming home. Very quiet and slept well. The rooms are beautiful and roomy. The staff are friendly and wonderful. Everyone is helpful. I have never been disappointed staying here. The situation is perfect to transport. Thank you. will be back again.

Overall a nice place to stay; friendly staff, large comfortable rooms, and a really great location. The breakfast was a bit disappointing, and by our 4th morning we felt like coffee at one of the many local cafes. Unfortunately, because we had requested a room with breakfast when we booked, they would not let us cancel the expensive breakfast charge. Live and learn....

I chose this hotel based on other Trip Adviser reviews (after reading both the positive as well as the negative). Exec Summary: this hotel exceeded our expectations, was a great value although there are reasons why this may not be the best fit for some. The Also is a charming Boutique Hotel with exceptional service. We found it to be a great compromise of historic architecture with plenty of amenities however if someone is looking for a very modern hotel then it is their fault if they decide to stay at a Boutique hotel and complain about certain things being dated. We found our hotel room and bathroom were quite comfortable, well though out, and with every convenience we could have wished for. Location - we really loved the location. The Alto is in Central Melbourne and only a 10 - 20 minute walk from almost all of the major landmarks. If a 10 - 20 minute walk is beyond your reach then take advantage of the completely free trams that run constantly throughout the Central Business District (CBD). You can literally hop on and off of them at any stop without any passes, tickets, etc. it's that easy! Nice Surprises: when we booked our room we did not see an option for Breakfast included (or not included). When we checked in we were told that Breakfast was included and our advice is that if you are presented with the option of spending a few dollars more in order to have breakfast included: DO IT! The breakfasts were a combination of some excellent buffet standards complimented by ordering a number of custom prepared/cooked full breakfast plates. The food was scrumptious and when we were running late one morning the restaurant staff prepared our breakfast sandwiches to-go. THERE WAS ALSO A HAPPY HOUR included for free during business days. Although we were only at the hotel during Happy Hour on two days of our stay, we were quite delighted with the variety of free libations and refreshments. A word about some of the negative reviews you may read: Is the location potentially noisy at night? Yes. But that is because you are staying in the CBD. We found that we only had to close our Window and Curtains when we were ready for sleep and voila - no outside noise. And, the temperature controls inside of the room do a great job at regulating the temperature. So if the outside street noise is a concern - just close your windows and shades and set the thermostat to your liking. The bed and pillows are incredibly comfortable as well so we always had a great night's sleep. We had also read a few negative complaints about the staff. While everyone is human and perhaps may have an off day or hour, we found every encounter with every staff member incredibly professional, polite, courteous and informative. If something requires additional attention and support - give the staff an opportunity to make things right and they will do everything within their power and reason to take care of it and you. But, if you are an unreasonable human being and like to take your frustrations out on other humans when things aren't to your liking then please spare this hotel and its guests and go elsewhere. The View - well, we didn't see every room, however based on the layout of the floor on which we stayed, it appears that the majority of rooms, like ours, may face inward at the space between the buildings. Again, there may be rooms with a view of the city, however our impression is that most of the rooms face inward so if a stellar view of the Melbourne skyline is a major priority for you then this hotel may not be your best choice. Overall we were incredibly happy with the staff, our room/bathroom, the amenities, location, and our fellow guests seemed to be equally happy with their decision to tay there and were quite polite and social as well.
