The people who work at Hotel Besso are extremely kind. Never in my life have I experienced such great hospitality before. They accommodated our every need, and when my father had a heart attack in Lugano one very kind man from the staff drove me to the hospital. They upgraded our room and made sure we were comfortable. The hotel is close to restaurants, shopping and the lake. You can see the lake from the balcony. We will surely be coming here again.
Quite deceiving double room (126 CHF with a poor breakfast): old furniture, old bed linen, and a smell of cigarettes that not even a vicious smoker would bear. Cleaning and renovating urgent! Not according to minimum standards in Western Europe.
The hotel is a little bit dated, old furniture and styling. It’s sufficient, but that’s all. Breakfast, again, was sufficient, but not luxurious. But... the staff is most friendly!! They are willing to do anything to ease your stay!! Because of car problems we were forced to stay at Lugano. Our dog was most welkome at the hotel!! By every problem we faced, the staff helped us willingly en were supportive! That made our stay at Hotel Besso!
Position is very good, you need to walk only a couple of minutes to reach the Railway Station. Staff is friendly, breakfast is better than expected. The rooms are not very nice but clean enough, furniture is old, there is no power plug available near the bed, and now a day with smartphones and tablets this is a bit of a nightmare. TV has a lot of channels from a lot of countries, but they are arranged in alphabetical order :) so it is not easy to zap among your country favorites.
Pros: Friendly, welcoming staff and free, off-street parking in a lot adjacent to the building. Note: staff has to lift the gate for you to be able to drive into or out of the lot. From the hotel I was able to walk down into the town without too much difficulty. I did not use the little track-train or funicular (whatever it is called) that runs up and down. The view from my room was limited, but quaint. I was only in Lugano to visit the Hermann Hesse Museum nearby, and lodging was easier to find, here. It was very neat to be in an Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. It felt and looked more "Italian" to me, but I haven't been across the border. Cons: My room smelled very heavily of some scented product when I checked in. It was overpowering, and I'm not that sensitive about such things. I had to leave windows open when I left to go out in hopes it would air it out by my return. It did somewhat but not a lot. A previous reviewer suggested their room smelled heavily of cleaning product, so perhaps that was it. But it also smelled like the scent in some masculine shaving creams, amped up a lot! Cleaning staff used a key to unlock my door (despite the "do not disturb sign on the handle) before I checked out in the morning, before it was time for me to check out in the morning, and while I was not dressed but instead was in the bathroom (not dressed) and with the bathroom door open. Thankfully they turned around and left almost immediately after walking in. What's the point in a "Do Not Disturb" sign if no one respects it? Staff walking into my room too early, unannounced, or despite a sign is/are one of my biggest accommodation irks, and I'm a guy that doesn't feel unsafe in my room. It's just a boundary and privacy (and respect) issue with regard to customer service in lodging. But it's too common, in my experience, at home in the states as well as abroad. I guess it's universal!
full points from us! we've visited the Hotel Besso as a large group of adults and little kids. The hotel is very well situated almost right next to the main train station. The inner city can easily be reached by a short foot walk or via other transport amenities. The Hotel Besso staff has been very friendly from on the first encounter via phone, via email confirming the trip, whilst our stay and at the departure. Although the hotel might not be the most modern, you'll get a very clean and tidy sleepingroom and bathroom. The breakfast included anything you need and was providen by a very friendly and carrying lady. All previoius negative comments are pointless out of our view. Of course there is some traffic as mentioned by other guests, but if they would have been more attentive while booking by looking at the hotel pictures and knew that a little traffic noise is to expect at a main street close to a train station. On the other hand you are well situated in terms of accessing the hotel by car, bus and train. Being a 5 star hotel regular, If I could I would give the hotelstaff a third star. I definitly will come back and recommend this hotel to any guest visiting Lugano that is looking for a friendly, well-hosted, clean and well situated place to stay the night!!! mille grazie Hotel Besso!
It is difficult to book in Lugano at least for a reasonable price. I booked this for a Euro price which was the best on offer. Good points include location, free wifi and free parking. Initial welcoming staff member was very pleasant. On the other hand breakfast is expensive and included a cockroach stamping show in the breakfast area. The room was not cleaned properly as I found various items under the bed. It was very noisy as we were road side. One window shutter broke permanently down. Old fashioned. Cost felt wrong as the euro chf was heavily wrong. Overall not rushing to come back.
Our room was very clean and tidy. The staff made us feel very welcomed and this hotel is very convenient to shopping, restaurants and tourist attractions. The cable car promptly gets you to and from the small downtown area and it runs promptly. I would recommend stating at this hotel as the beds are very relaxing.
Kinda ruined our trip here because we didnt get much sleep. Cars zooming, and honking outside our window, and teens hanging out under our window in the alley until I yelled at the twice to go away. The location is way up at the top of the hill so dont try to walk there with suitcases from the bus stop, its farther than it looks. Pillows made me want to shoot someone. I ended up rolling towels underneath. Air conditioner was only if you pay for the remote. Everything was closed in our area by 7 pm on Saturday so we ate at an indian restaurant which ironically, had the best burger ive ever had in my life. Hallways were dark and icky.
From the moment we arrived, the staff were lovely and smiley - despite a slight language barrier! Free parking was a huge bonus, they let us keep our car there for the day that we checked out. It is right next to the train station and about 10 minute walk to the centre (a little longer on the way back, it's very hilly!) The room was very basic yet very clean. No AC but we visited on a very hot evening and there were fans in the room which helped massively. Overall, the hotel needs some TLC but for a one night stay in a beautiful town, I can't complain!
