perfectly located close to urban sites of Cascais, Estoril and Lisbon, but in a very preserved natural area with amazing beaches, this hotel may look a bit impersonal but actually service and amenities are great. breakfast buffet is excellent, and I do recommend the Japanese sushi bar. lots a great restaurants around. and it's pet friendly! (well, your fur friend needs to say in his bag on public areas such as swimming pool and restaurants, but we managed staying with our small dog for a week there... and the golf is a perfect place for him to walkout!). and, like in most places in Portugal, very friendly people!!
We stayed with a family of 4 in the hotel in 2 lofts. We really enjoyed it! We had nice terraces with sea view. The location is superb, surrounded by nature! We enjoyed the cycling to Cascais' shopping areas and the beaches. We also did enjoy the outside swimming pool and the golf area. We did regret that you have to pay for the inside swimming pool.
My wife and I spent 10 days at the Oitavos. Although the location and the infrastructure of the resort are great, the latter one would need to be refreshed and improved. The rooms are huge with a big terrace, and we were fortunate to have a magnificent ocean view. However, unfortunately, the rooms are not well designed. There is no separation between the main room and the bathroom. Given the fact that there is no separate light for the toilet, when you turn the light on, the entire room gets lighted, which in turn can be a problem during the night. Even though the Wi-Fi is free, it is erratic and very slow with an average speed of 3Mbps. It is back to the future of 20 years ago. The staff and employees of the hotel are nice but inefficient. There is definitely a problem of management in the hotel. It is absolutely not normal to wait at the swimming pool for more than half an hour to get a couple of drinks. Moreover, this also happened at the breakfast, we had to wait 40 minutes before receiving the eggs we ordered. Once seated, we were disappointed because neither the food nor the quality of the products are good. At the beginning of our stay, the waiters were running everywhere without structure, like chickens with their heads cut off. The management of the hotel, after many complaints of clients, improved after a couple of days, however, we are still far from a supposedly 5 star hotel. Beware of the supposedly complimentary Nespresso and tea in the rooms, you are getting charged 2 € per capsule or tea bag. Last but not least, the Spa and the fitness, at first sight look nice but the sauna and the hammam did not work well, neither did some machines at the fitness. Bottom line: do not go there until the management changes!!!
I've stayed at the hotel from July 25-27. Got one of the rooms in the 3rd floor - rooms are extremely large, huge and comfortable bed, couch, living are, balcony - the only point you should address is that the bathroom is opened to the room - if your company does not like to be seem at the bathroom, go to another place - not my case. The hotel is in overall good condition - cleanliness was outstanding in the room, but lacking in the balcony couch and in some areas within the 3rd floor corridors. Staff was extremely nice and helpful, everything according to plan. Breakfast has several options and service was extremely good. I had a small time at the pool, which was nice, with nice views. Also, the whole idea seems to be somewhat modern and cubic of some sort, so everything is straight, large and blue - if this is not what your looking for, go for someplace else, in my case, I've found the decoration to have a specific character, which was extremely nice. I do recommend the hotel also since it is an extremely good value/money!
Stayed a few times in The Oitavos over the last years. It was good up to great, but now it is still the same hotel with poor service quality. It seems the employees have difficulties with languages other than Portugese. The breakfast is a nighmare, the scrambled eggs taste like water, eggs bennedict are served without anything, there is no spread for vegetarians and so on. Unfortunately, we will not return. Well nobody remembers you anyway.
The hotel is all in all a nice facility which needs renovation here and there. The service is far away from 5 stars. Maybe more senior personnel would help to increase professionality. At breakfast, the service staff was often confused, we got things that we did not order and waited for what we ordered (which were brought to other tables apparently). At the pool bar, it took at least 5 minutes until someone came to the table, even though it was empty and three waiters where behind the bar. Some people of the staff did not speak English, which makes it diffucult to communicate with international guests. The reception mostly did not greet while we entered or left the hotel - that was absolutely new for me. The check-out was a disaster, our bill was wrong several times and it was handled neither professionally nor friendly, we ended up counting our individual bills ourselves to prove that the check-out bill was about 300 € overvalued. The room was great though. We had a standard room, very spacious, nicely equipped and very clean. The view over the dunes and the comfortable bed were nice. I find it disapropriate that a capsule of coffee or a tea bag in the room are charged with 2 € extra per piece, that is usually included in that kind of hotels. The Spa is tiny and if not included in the room, 25 € per day and room are charged extra. The Spa staff was very nice and gave us a good introduction at the first day, the massage booked there was good, too. The Gym has no window and no daylight and fey trainig maschines, we preferred going to a local gym in Cascais. In total, we would chose another hotel next time.
The deep bass of the wedding music lasted until 6am. The fire alarms went off probably a dozen times between 1am and 6am. The hotel staff did not know how to address the issue and were not helpful to the dozens of guests complaining. That was our stay at the Oitavos. The only redeeming factor was that there were no questions asked from the front desk manager when we said we wanted to check out early and get a refund. The luxury hotel fell far short of others on offer in Portugal or across Europe. The coffee/espresso machine in the room charged €2 per cup. Breakfast was €25. You received only the first bottle of water as complimentary. It constantly felt like the Oitavos was nickel and dime-ing its guests. The design of the hotel also fell flat (although it looks great in photos). The rooms are sterile and cold. The gym was adequate with a single workout bench, some treadmills/elliptical/bikes/rower and a few machines. Even without the loud wedding, we would not return.
The good points: Rooms are huge and really high quality, really spacious hotel, pool area ok but not the best. Staff I found generally really happy to help BUT and for us a big BUT the weekends I now understand they have wedding parties!!!! Cut a long story short the whole hotel was kept awake all night buy revellers and the fire alarm going off all night due to the SMOKE making machine at the party!!. Eventually(5.00 am) most of the guests gathered in reception to complain to the poor frazzled reception guy who was having a nervous break down but doing his best, whilst the general manager slept nicely at home!!!!! We all decided to go to the party to sort them out!!!!! We were met by some poor waiter who said the party would go on for another hour to 6.00am as they had paid for that!!!! but good news the smoke maker was shut down so the fire alarm should be fine, guess what it wasn't it went off again I could sense the groan from the other rooms. Big problem: the hotel management didn't bother to come in to sort it out. We checked out and left no apologies from the managements as yet Im not holding my breath.
Had a bit of issue upon check-in where breakfast was not included (breakfast was included in my booking). The front office lady then told me to deal with the agent I booked the rooms?! Thanks for the great "suggestion" where clearly it was a mistake between the hotel and the travel agent. Anyway that was sorted when I spoke to the reservation staff. I was not happy with their inexperienced front office staff. The room was big and nice with no toothbrush (upon request only) and no bathrobes. Breakfast was good and the view from the balcony was also nice.
This hotel is hugely let down by having the lowest level of service I've ever seen in a 5 star. It's not even comparable to anything I've come across. Firstly, the good points - beautiful well maintained pool good temperature and clean large rooms. The architecture and room features are very modern but somewhat resembles a hospital, it's very eerie and clinical but for many this may be to their tastes. The hotel staff however are completely incompetent, when we arrived the staff are very cold, no one seems to have much authority and most have a look of panic on their faces - clearly all out of their depth. We were checked in and given our room keys, absolutely no introduction or guidance given about the hotel or grounds or facilities, no help with bags either. The hotel is very big and we went to our room and walked in to find another very concerned couple in the room. The desk manager ran up and said it was a miscommunication as he had changed our rooms, not sure if telepathy was being insinuated and that we should have known to not follow the room key number. Mistakes happen, I don't mind, we were given our room which had comfy bed. We had breakfast the following day, at €25pp so expectations were high! We were asked what eggs we'd like, and ordered... we then waited, after half hour I ate my buffet breakfast whilst my partner waited further, she then asked the hostess for an update, she checked came back and said the eggs hadn't been put through. So we waited again, a further half hour -1 hour wait total now before asking the manager, who had no apology and the hostess asked surprisingly; "had we not had them yet"? Shouldn't she know, being our waitress? After an hour eggs were served and we had to pay €50 to eat separately. The following day, the same thing, dessert and drink by the pool ordered, drink doesn't show up. Many guests were having the same issues and were laughing, it was like an in-joke between guests at how every order was incorrectly processed by staff. This wasn't a language barrier, the simplest orders of Coca-Cola or similar just forgotten. A camomile tea ordered at next breakfast, citron/lemon tea arrived and when asked to change it to what we ordered nothing was changed, think we later saw it being given to an incorrect table. The staff aren't hotel staff, they are more like conference staff, there to set up but with no serving training. On the last we had a man called Jose take our order, he was excellent and very attentive and different breed compared to other staff. We eventually left, no staff smiled or said hello, I asked reception for some details on the resort one evening he told me to ask the staff on reception tomorrow! Never got any details about the golf course or spa. We moved to another hotel, and the change was instant, welcoming, warm helpful full tour of hotel and facilities, details on restaurants etc It's a shame as clearly there are some talented chefs and groundsmen here, it could be a special place, comfy beds amazing pool, great food, but needs a general manager. Kind regards
