We booked a suite and had a good time at Cancajos. The best with the hotel is the service minded staff. You just have to ask for things and they help you a lot. We missed a water boiler in the room for tea.
30 min queue to check in. Room not ready until 3pm. Another queue to pick up key. Allocated a suite. 2 beds in main room with further 2 beds in bedroom. There were only 2 of us! Sitting area with sink, coffee maker, fridge and microwave but no crockery or utensils. Only English news channels on TV. Wi fi fine. Mattress and pillows were lovely and room was clean. Well decorated and good bathroom/shower although shower leaked and wasn't fixed by maintenance man. Bit dark because on one side faced hotel and other side balcony faced housing estate next door. A higher room or sea view would have been better. Asked to move but told full. Queue for dinner first night. No vegetarian food first night so had to request something. Adequate other nights with good labelling. Food generally OK. Dining room very hectic with staff rushing around and quests shuffling round. Average age 65. Can't have a coffee in restaurant after meal. Shame because bar was loud and dark and inadequate seating in bar and separate lounge sitting area. Coffee foul in any case. Bar in lobby closed in evening. Resort is low key, a few restaurants, a short cliff walk, black sand beach nearby. 1 hour walk into Santa Cruz or bus/taxi. Rained for a week so didn't try pool.
There are no worries or concerns booking this hotel in La Palma. Location: Bus 500 gets you into Santa Cruz from where you can get a bus anywhere on island apart from two places. You can walk into Santa Cruz took us 30 mins. Tourist information 5 mins walk from hotel you can get all the information you need. Hotel is right on sea front. Food and drinks: Lots of local dishes. Lots of fish, suckling pig, etc. This is good quality rustic cooking and we loved it. We are not big drinker's but went with AL package. Worth it. Coffees, bottles of wine, cocktails. Accommodation: We had a suite in a refurbished room over looking sea and pool. Excellent. Modern clean, 5 stars for accommodation. Room 5501 Service: hard working pleasant staff. Place as clean as a pin. Free WiFi everywhere. Special mention to Bernardo in reservations. Thank you. He understands what customer service actually means. I was not a particularly easy guest. Over All. We came to have a weeks walking but the weather was too bad so we spent a lot of time in the hotel. We were very comfortable. We are H10 club members and the daily chocolates were a nice touch. The rooms have all amenities including toothbrush and shaving pack. Free WiFi was a bonus. Food was regional and we liked that. I emailed the hotel before hand and when we arrived I was not happy with the room. Bernardo in reservations offered us a different room which was excellent. LA Palma is an not a commercialised place. It is not like the other Canaries islands. The pace of life is slower. It is not a night club, shopping Mecca. I could see why it might not suit some people. But we loved this island, even though the weather was poor. Gales and rain, we still enjoyed what we managed to see and experience. There were three different walking companies in the hotel whilst we were staying. The walk we managed to do across the north of the island was unique.
Good bits: Staff, location, bus stop outside, 10 mins from airport, free wifi. Bad bits: Very tired looking in places. Plenty of choice in dining room....all cold or lukewarm. If you go with little expectations then you will not be disappointed.
We have just returned from a weeks holiday staying at H10 Taburiente Playa on the beautiful Island of La Palma, on a reasonably package with Tui . The hotel was excellent- our room was a good size with a great sea view from the balcony, a fridge and a safe. The hotel was busy with 430 rooms, however it was always quiet after 11pm. We enjoyed swimming in the heated swimming pool and best of all was the food which was wonderful, both breakfast and evening buffet. There was always plenty of choice and variety, some canary specialities, lots of fish dishes and salads. We always had breakfast out on the terrence in the sunshine, which was lovely. Admittedly the evening meal could be hectic, with noise and queues as there were a lot of people in the dining room, however we found that eating in the conservatory made for a more relaxing dining experience, although it was further away from the buffet. The staff were pleasant and the hotel was well located for exploring the island. We recommend this hotel and will definitely return.
Taburriente Playa Hotel situates in Los Cancajos village about 5 km from Santa Cruse airport (SPC). Airplanes are taking up or down over the hotel area. Flights to this airport are operating only daytime from 8 am to 9 pm. The hotel has plenty of suites at reasonable prices. Some hotel rooms are worn but some are in good condition. The rooms have not any heating, is needed during cold periods (winter time). You can ask heater from reception. The restaurant operates very well. during breakfast and dinner times. I was missing theme dinners. The safety deposit boxes were overpriced.
Our room was facing due east in the northern corner of this large hotel. The sun, in January, does not reach there at ANY time of day. The room was large (about 20' x 12' with 9' ceiling) and a balcony, entered by a patio door, the trim of which was loose. The draught under the patio door was so strong as to blow the curtains out so the room was constantly COLD. Having asked for extra blankets we found a single thin sheet had been provided which did nothing to help us to keep warm at night. When we asked for a heater, (other guests had told us that there were some) we were informed that there were none available as they had all been given out. A heater was provided the following day. It was so small as to be virtually useless. (See photo) With only two power points in the room, one for the table lamp and one for the TV, we had to be supplied with an extension lead to run the heater and charge any other electrical devices, i.e. computer, ipad, camera etc.. We did find a third power point, for the fridge eventually. Internet access was only available in the foyer of the hotel, what a joke in 2018. The shower looked to be about 20 years old and when in use could, without warning, go from comfortable to dangerously SCALDING every time on of the nearby rooms flushed a toilet or turned on a cold tap. The bath was worn so smooth as to be dangerous, especially if trying to avoid the sudden scalding. Next to our room were two of the four lifts. These started rumbling from about 06:30am until beyond midnight, covering anything from 1 to7 floors. This did nothing to help our already cold disturbed sleep pattern. On the plus side, the food was generally good although some of the breakfast that should have been hot was not (Cold scrambled eggs?). The staff were good. There was a safe in the room, the key for which was 2.30Euros a day!
This hotel, one of a fairly extensive chain of apparently otherwise good hotels, was a real disappointment in so, so many ways. Frankly, we found it to be well below the standard we'd encountered from this type of hotel elsewhere on the Canaries. It was large, it was noisy, it was chaotic and the attitudes of too many staff were apparently uninterested, unpleasant, and in the bar area, just downright rude. The whole ambience strongly suggested that it was being badly managed - in fact, when I complained to one of the management staff in the dining room about poor service and serious shortcomings, he said - and I quote - "Yes I know" and he just walked off! Clearly he hadn't done the "customer service" course! I can't begin to describe all of the problems we encountered, but just acouple of examples: The bacon had been cooked by placing several overlapping layers in a shallow tray in a pool of oil then baked under a grill. The result was parts of the rashers were carbonized while other parts were barely cooked; we often found serving trays were left empty, and serving areas were not as well cleaned as I'd experienced elsewhere. When asking dining room staff for help or information their responses were often either unhelpful. It appeared fairly obviously that the kitchens and dining room simply weren't up to dealing with the number of meals they were expected to provide. This, we eventually concluded, may have been the result of having to try to cope with residents from adjacent rooms and flats without increasing the necessary infrastructure. On the positive side, the room itself was clean, comfortable and with good views,it was in a good location and the staff at check-in and on departure were fine, pleasant and engaged. However,, given the number of other hotels in the vicinity, this is very definitely not one I'd ever think of re-visiting, and I'd never recommend to anyone.
Just reiterating what others have said. This is a lovely hotel in a great location. The downside is the dining experience. We stayed half board but wished we had opted for bed and breakfast only. Choice of dishes are plentiful and you can eat as much as you like but the dining room is complete chaos. We paid extra for a suite, which was very spacious. The water was always hot in the shower but watered leaked all over the floor. We thought the suite came with a microwave but ours didn’t. We discussed this with reception and they were very helpful. They provided us with a kettle as there was no microwave. Lovely daily treat was chocolates delivered to room with weather forecast for next day. My husband follows a gluten free diet and we advised reception of this. We only had to ask the waiters for gluten free breakfast items and this was provided without any fuss. Hotel was clean and all staff were friendly and helpful. As this is a popular hotel just wish they could improve the dining arrangements. Would return but only for bed and breakfast.
The hotel is in a fantastic location and were were lucky enough to have been given a corner suite with wraparound balcony. This gave us views over Santa Cruz, The mountains and the sea only 50 feet directly below. The room needs updating, rusty light fittings and tired scuffed furniture but was clean and had a fantastic shower with plenty of hot water. The maids all said hello and were very friendly. Rooms also have a good sized fridge. The pool area and sun loungers were great but be warned in heavy seas the waves will send spray over unsuspecting guests. The major let down was the restaurant. It was like eating in a large canteen. Very noisy with people rushing around and queuing. Not exactly a relaxing dining experience. The best advice is try and eat out in the conservatory avoid the chaos. As Los Cancajos is a small resort and we would be out hiking and exploring all day we decided to stay half board. Breakfast was pretty good with plenty of choice from fruits, pastries and breads, cold cuts and hot selections. Fresh smoothies, pancakes and omelettes so pretty good. The hot food tended to be lukewarm and did not vary much from day to day. In an evening it was complete chaos. The staff were fantastic and were rushing around to try to keep tables clear and drink orders coming so hats off to them. However the layout meant you spent all the time trying to put a meal together by queuing at several buffet areas while your lukewarm food got colder. One station for grilled meats, another queue for bread, another for salads and a further queue for other mains and side dishes. All dishes were over cooked and lacked flavour and texture. The menu was obviously designed for people with neither teeth or tastebuds. A big part of a holiday is trying local foods but there was nothing here that couldn't be found in any motorway service station In any country in Europe. Dessert was tinned fruit, poor ice cream or a selection of small pastries. Very disappointing. In winter there is no pool bar for snacks or drinks. You have to go back into the restaurant to order a drink. Bar prices are high..€3.50 for a beer €10+ for a gin and tonic and €6 for a very small weak cocktail. If all you want is a comfy bed in a clean hotel with a powerful hot shower and a good breakfast, a nice pool and comfortable sunbeds then the Taburiente Playa has you covered. It is a good place to explore the island from. We had a car for 2 weeks so could get away from the cloud and wind on the east coast. Stay Bed and Breakfast and you wont be disappointed. But avoid the evening meals...a stressful and tasteless experience.
