Sheraton Pretoria Hotel5.0 out of 5.0

We stayed here on our first day in South Africa overlooking the Government buildings. The staff were helpful and friendly and we had an excellent breakfast in the older style hotel. It probably needs a bit of an overhaul but generally it was pleasant and had nice views from our bedroom.
This was a typical Sheraton Hotel. Rooms were comfortable with all amenities. Breakfast buffet was pretty standard although one morning when we had a very early departure, they were not ready for us. Early wake up call never came. We did not venture out as our schedule was very tight. Nothing special about this hotel.
Check in and general staff very helpful and the rooms large and comfortable. The restaurant however left a lot to be desired and the service intermittent and slow. The food was good but not to the standard one would expect.
Hotel needs attention, service not good as staff don't seem to care about guest relations. We enjoyed the food immensely, I would go so far as to say the food was the saving grace for our stay. Thanks to the Chef for making our stay worthwhile. Lovely view from our room and super comfortable bed.
Have stayed at this Sheraton multiple times and never yet been disappointed with any of the service. Check-in and check-out has always been stress free and left me feeling valued as a guest. Buffet breakfast each morning is full of fresh choices - appreciate the ample space in the restaurant. Room service is well worth it as well (fresh, Espresso machine in room was a highlite for me. Comfortable beds, lovely spacious writing desk, clean luxurious bathroom. Really enjoyed the afternoons with live piano music in lobby/restaurant area. SPG members enjoy free wifi. Only disappointment was that there was no hot tub or indoor swimming pool, otherwise I'd give 5 star rating.
This is the 2nd time I have stayed at Sheraton Pretoria. The first time I had a problem with check in but this time was quick and efficient. During both visits I would unfortunately have to say that although it is a nice venue, great location, spacious rooms and overall friendly staff the service was very slow and sub standard for a 5 star hotel. The prices for food and drinks was very expensive but the service and quality of the food was sadly poor. If I return I will avoid the restaurant and bar.
The hotel is lovely and clean with friendly staff. The lunch and dinner we had were very good. The rooms are massive with very comfortable beds. However, we returned to our room after dinner to find it stank of cigarette smoke, it was late so the management bought up a plug in de-ioniser. ( I assume this happens a lot..) The next day after lunch, the same problem, so they moved our room. We arrived early on our first day, so to kill time we had breakfast there, t was served buffet style, and apart from the yogurt and fresh fruit was fairly damn poor. It also cost £18 per person. Rip off. To cap it all off, we discovered that all the tips we’d paid, in good faith, didn’t go to the people who’s served us. The management tried to deny this at first, but eventually admitted those staff weren’t full time. To me, that’s fraud. Terrible PR and unfair on the staff who had earned that tip.
Spent one night in this hotel which has a great location in the nicer part of the city and looks across to the Union Buildings and statue of Nelson Mandela. Our room was clean, bed and bath linen also clean. For a well known brand chain, I felt the room was a little tired and needed some brighter colours to lift the room. Check in was efficient as was the handling of our luggage. Some others travelling in our group experienced problems with lights, television etc and were moved to other rooms. As we were leaving at 6.00am the following morning, and the dining area was not open for breakfast, continental breakfast packs were arranged for us. These were not nice at all as the scones, muffins etc were stale and not much else was enjoyable! This is not what is expected of a Sheraton hotel!! It would have been nice if the hotel had made an effort to take care of our breakfast earlier before we left. It was not the best stay we have experienced from the Sheraton chain.
We stayed here on 17 January for one night , went on Safari for three nights and returned on 21 January for one night prior to going on the Blue Train. A few days before arrival I was sent into panic by an email from the hotel asking if I was still coming . I had no idea as to what had triggered this concern on their behalf . I reassured them I was and asked why did they ask - had there been a problem with the reservation system? The response was they just wanted to make sure I was still coming ! I wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t noticed the email? The trip didn’t start well when the driver (arranged by the hotel) who was meant to meet us at the airport after 18 hours travelling didn’t turn up. We had email confirmations from the hotel and their affiliated travel company. The travel company had no record of our reservation, notwithstanding an email from them to us that had a confirmation number. After a number of calls we finally got a driver an hour late. To be fair they did not charge us. I emailed the individuals in the front desk that I arranged the car with to familiarise them with the problem we had so it wouldn’t happen to others, but no response or apology was forthcoming. The property is well located opposite the Union Building , imposing and in good clean condition. The rooms are very comfortable. However ; The keys given to us on check in didn’t work, we never got the ice we called for, on departure I was charged for a breakfast that was included in the price and they asked for my credit card which I had already given them and somehow got lost on the front desk. On our second night we never got a wake up call and they tried to charge us for the night that had already been paid for with our Blue Train package. Checkout is painfully slow - exacerbated by the fact they got the bill wrong both times. The restaurant staff are delightful, the bell boy polite and welcoming -it would appear the front desk/ management need some attitude adjustment and vigorous re-training.
We were booked into this hotel as a large group and the first impressions of the interior were good. That was about as good as it got however! I have read many of the reviews since I returned to the UK and all the complaints listed were still prevalent during our stay. The General Manager Pascal Fouquel repeatedly makes apologises to these complaints for the same failings of the hotel but clearly does nothing about it as the grounds for complaint still remain. We also had no towels, a terrible meal in the main restaurant (our fish wasn't even cooked and when the waitress took away our plates still completely full of food she didn't enquire if we hadn't enjoyed the meal) and we waited an age for a drink. One of our group wanted a fillet steak for dinner but was told they had run out! - 5 star or Fawlty Towers? It got no better on the second day as breakfast was an utter disgrace. Tables were stacked high with dirty pots and crockery and the only way we could even sit down was to clear a table of dirty dishes etc and put them on another dirty table and then tour the restaurant looking for clean crockery and cutlery from place settings not used on other tables full of dirty dishes as there was no staff to ask for help. We then had to lay our own places before going in search of whatever food was available which was tepid and unappealing. The air con in the bed room was extremely poor and the shelf in a wardrobe collapsed pitching my wife's clothes on to the floor of the wardrobe which revealed just how dirty this was as the clothes were covered in dust. Sadly the hotel is constantly full presumably with Business travellers who just put up with things so complacency has set in at the highest level confirmed by the same complaints continually being made. I am pleased to say our Tour Operator has pulled their business out of the Sheraton completely as they are not prepared to have their clients suffer such sub standard service and conditions. The Sheraton has an excellent name throughout the world so one wonders how this situation has been allowed to fester for so long as clearly a complete change of management from the top downwards is needed to restore this hotel to what it should be. I only gave ii one star because I didn't think I could go any lower but it is by some way the worst hotel I have ever stayed in and I have stayed in very very many. My advice if you are thinking of staying here Is - DON'T
- Free WiFi in rooms and public areas
- Onsite dining
- Outdoor pool
