The Alcove Library Hotel

Located approximately mid way between the airport and the city center, the Alcove Library is a hidden gem. If you do not mind the off the main tourist properties, this one is for you. The service staff are excellent and the rooms very comfortable. One unique feature of the hotel is how the serve their breakfast st Bookmark, their roof top restaurant. Rather then having the usual buffet for breakfast, you select your items from a menu and they serve it at your table. Great hotel but be prepared to commute if you want to go into the city

Located in district 1 fairly close to the airport we chose this hotel because of its location and previous reviews. Got in late and used their shuttle service, got some sleep then headed back to the airport. The room was clean- though the one we had was directly over the lobby so there was a little noise. The furnishings and appointments were standard- nothing spectacular but comfortable enough. We would stay here again for another short stay. The service was good and friendly.

Away from the noise and huddle of downtown and much closer to airport. Nice accommodation and great restaurant. Modest price, but very well managed. Really pleasant stay. We will be coming back for sure.

The decor and overall feel of the hotel is very pretty and picturesque, but the location and noise from the street is annoying. It’s about a 30 minute walk from the city centre, and the war museum. Our room was on the 4th floor and though we didn’t hear any noise from the restaurant above us, the noise from the street was loud enough in the morning it felt like the window was open. Also don’t be alarmed when you go down the back alley to get to the hotel, it’s completely safe to walk around at night. We stayed in a room with a king bed which was very comfy, but the room itself was smaller than expected for the price we paid. Air conditioning was good and so was the water pressure. Breakfast was included and also served lunch and dinner. It was somewhat expensive and didn’t have that many options but the food was well prepared. Overall I wouldn’t stay here again.

My husband and I accidentally stumbled upon this hotel and actually already had a reservation in one of the much bigger central hotels, but having read the reviews and looked at the pictures on the website, we decided we wanted something out of the city, a bit quieter and more intimate - having spent a fair proportion of our holiday moving about Thailand Cambodia and Vietnam in big hotels. So we stayed here instead. It was great value for money, easy to get in and out of the city cheaply in a cab and also walking (though in the stifling heat it is a bit much) Our room was very nice (though bit dark, I could have done with some more lighting) and the breakfasts totally fine. What readymade this hotel though was the staff - especially Teyzi on the front desk who helped us with directions, information, booking tickets for us and just generally being a star. same must be said of the boys on the desk overnight - so sorry forgotten their names - but we wanted to cancel a coach trip and go by train instead to Mu Nie and and they helped us and also get us a refund as well - all in the early hours!! They were super helpful and lovely and we would definitely recommend people to stay here. We really like boutique hotels and this will definitely feature in our top ten. Thanks everyone who made our trip so perfect!

We were two friends travelling through Vietnam and this was our last spot before going back home. After a few days at a resort, we wanted a quiet and nice hotel that was comfortable, not too expensive and close to the airport. Though it is a bit more far away from the center, you have regular buses and taxis going to the city, and even restaurants and cafés in the neighborhood as well. The staff is extremely friendly, the hotel has nice amenities, is very cosy and stylish (especially the famous entrance!). All in all we enjoyed our stay very much!

We stayed for three nights and had chosen the hotel for the good reviews - it was disappointing. The rooms were a good size and furnished well. The air conditioning was fine and the bathroom adequate. There is a switch outside the bathroom that controls the hot water, which counter intuitively we found that having the switch up was ‘on’ rather than down? An inconvenience for me as a ‘wet shaver’ is that the bathroom sink doesn’t have a hot water feed, only the shower does. I initially thought we had a fault but was told by reception that all the sinks are fitted this way. Also avoid floor 4 - the restaurant is immediately above and as soon as chairs are moved you know it. The real issue at the hotel is the understaffing/inexperience/attitude of the restaurant staff. Three breakfasts and one attempted evening meal brought a mix of service standards akin to buying a lottery ticket. I also hate to see restaurant staff eating behind the counter. There was mention of a ‘supervisor’ but little evidence of constructive supervision was apparent. The location of the hotel is also an issue. Yes, it’s good for the airport transfer but it’s not so good for the city centre. Ordinarily it would be good stroll to the city centre, but this is Vietnam. At a good time the pathways are blocked with motorcycles and crossing the main junctions can be daunting. At peak times it’s quite dangerous as the moped riders use the pathways as a way around the traffic jam. Taxis are cheap (about 65,000 dong to the centre) but make sure you carry a map and know where the hotel is because in our experience taxi drivers speak no English and have little knowledge of the city outside of the centre. Even when we gave them the business card and address of the hotel we drew a blank. Pointing to a location just over the bridge on the airport road got us to within walking distance of the hotel. This hotel should have been so much better. We won’t be going back.

Overall, first impression is great, but certain things and my final impression were not so good. Booking on the hotel's web page didn't work due to some insistence on choosing a room, but then not allowing me to do so. I wanted the direct booking discount so I called. Lucy did a fine job helping with the booking by phone with email confirmation (after a spelling correction was needed). I don't know if I got the discount because I wasn't given a receipt when I checked out. I like the theme and decor. Room service was good and fast enough to 'catch me with my pants down' and I forgot to give the restaurant discount coupon that I looked forward to using. The disappointment came the next morning. "No, you cannot have the food discount because you didn't present the coupon at the time of your order"...even though I'm paying for everything at the same time. Ok, I get it, I lose...but the tone of the clerk left me with a bad feeling. (Twelve). I had just lost an hour to breakfast due to a very understaffed dining room staff (topped off by a horrible latte that needed to be sent back), I guess the joke was on me. Oh, you won't need a night light, the air conditioner power light shines bright in your eyes all night long. Even though I have visited several times before and have occasion to visit often and refer to others, I would not bother again. After all, it's just a book themed, small, slow, average property for its prices, with some staff that are good at what they do, and some that aren't, some that communicate well, and some that don't.

The ambiance and theme are an attractive feature but it is the staff that really set this boutique hotel apart! Extremely helpful from the front desk to the restaurant, they care about your needs. Although not in the shopping district this gem is a quick taxi ride away and well worth it. The breakfast is excellent....as is the rest of the menu.

It was very close to airport. Took the shuttle(15 US). Took us 10 minutes at 6 am. Highly recommend. Quiet, clean, big room, friendly staff. They packed us breakfast as we flew out before breakfast was served.
