Hotel Grifone4.0 out of 5.0

This hotel was very nice, clean and relatively spacious. The main criticism is that they did not have tea and coffee making facilities in the room and the staff at the front desk were very hit and miss as to how helpful they were! About a 30 minute walk from the main centre of Florence. It is well linked by bus and situated in a lovely part of Florence. Very peaceful.
I have stayed with my family at hotel Grifone, which is in the perfect location for enjoying the attractive things of Sirmione! Most of all, the beautiful and warm-heart couple is running this hotel, they help much in giving many information and considering our stay for the comfortable and enjoyable. It seems a kind of home rather than hotel to us. In our Italy travel, this place is the best of the bests!!
This hotel suppose to be a 4 star hotel .This is definitely not the case ... Firstly most of the rooms are very filthy and the staff didn't clean it even when we asked them to .When we have first arrived here the first thing I noticed was that the air condition was barely working . After some time we decided to clean the inside of the air condition and what we saw was outrageous. It was filled with dust as you can see in the picture. The fridge wasn't working well cause it had ice in it. In day 2 there was a big storm . We left in the morning and when we arrived the whole room was flooded . The beds where wet, electronics and clothes destroyed and totally indifference by the staff and the manager (who finally arrived the next day ) .Lastly the photos from booking was far from reality in a very bad way . Of course I recommend you not to come here because is very likely that your holidays will be destroyed...
My wife and I stayed here for three nights during our tour of Italy. It was 20€ for the taxi from the train station. The hotel is out of the city centre but we did walk in along the river one day and found it a beautiful and enjoyable 45 minute walk. Our preferred means of transport ended up being the local bus service which was fine if you were not under any time constraints as working out when the next bus was due we found almost impossible. The hotel reception staff were the nicest we experienced during our travels and the room was fine. The breakfast experience had to be seen to be believed, it was just utter chaos, firstly trying to find somewhere to sit, then facing the challenge of grabbing the staffs attention so that you could have some cutlery! The food provided was typical of the country, namely breads, cakes, meats cheeses etc and was more then sufficient to start off the day. If we were to return to Florence then we would happily stay here again. Florence did end up being our favourite destination during our Italian tour, well ahead of Rome and Venice.
If you choose Grifone for your stay... Remember you are going to spend a lot on taxi and bus. Location is not at all nice. The rooms are decent. Florence was really hot when we got there. So walking around for the bus became a task. The lady at the breakfast was really nice and humble.
The hotel is quite good, clean and nice. I've stayed in the annex building that was cheaper but I found my room much better than the rooms in the main building. The hotel is about 20-30 minutes walking from the centre but by taxi is really just 5-10 minutes drive, The breakfast was quite basic but still decent.
This hotel is in a residential area but on a frequent bus route into the city, it is walkable along the river and this is quite pleasant but takes about 30+ minutes. The rooms were clean and comfortable but basic and dated. The buffet breakfast was standard and sufficient. As we had dinner in central Florence it didnt matter that there didnt seem to be any restaurants or bars near to the hotel.
Excellent welcome when we arrived. The hotel is clean if a little dated. The room had everything we needed although was smaller than hotel rooms we are used to in the UK. Staff were helpful and knowledgeable. The local bus service is efficient if crowded at peak times, but the walk into town was easily manageable in 20 mins. The local restaurant is exceptional for both quality and value - turn right out of the hotel and right again at the junction ...about 50 yds on the right. Excellent ice cream shop 50yds further on!! Excellent value - we stayed for a week.
Changed rooms when we got here because smell of sewage. New room just the same main hotel seems ok but annex rooms are very bad. The rooms are cold and have a damp feel to them. We have constantly kept the heater on. At breakfast the staff were very friendly and there was a lot of choice but the overriding factor of the room made this hotel a no go for me again.
Firstly, travelling from Pisa airport to Florence.... unless you particularly want to travel by train, or don't queue for tickets within the arrivals area, walk outside, turn right and you will see a yellow kiosk where you can buy a 10 euro ticket that will take you to the main train station in Florence - Santa Maria Novello - (5 Euro for children). The coaches run very regularly and was really convenient and cheap ! Takes about an hour and 10 mins. When you get to Florence, walk up the ramp into the station alongside platform 16, at the end of the platform, turn left out of station and find the local bus service, you need bus number 14 that will eventually take you to round the corner of the hotel. The hotel ... staff were very helpful and courteous. The appearance of the hotel was very 1980s. The rooms are basic and clean however, no tea and coffee facilities in the room, only a payable mini bar with no drinking glasses. The bathroom lighting wasn't adequate and made the room very dark and although there was a tv in the room, there are no English channels ( not that you go on holiday to watch tv ! ) however, if the weather is not good there is nothing to do as the bar is not open at all. As mentioned previously, the hotel is on a direct bus route (14) to the city, however when you have been out for the day, and returned to the hotel, there are no decent restaurants except one to walk to for a meal in the evening as the hotel is in a predominately residential area. No nice street bars, cafes etc like in the city. La Forca restaurant was our saving grace as served good food. Out of hotel, turn right, then left keep walking to end of the road, then look on the opposite corner. Breakfast times were good, 7am - 10.30am to allow a lie in, however the choice was very limited for a continental breakfast. We have travelled lots round Europe and a continental breakfast usually has some warm component i.e. Scrabble egg/ bacon. The only warm food here is a hard boiled egg, some cheese, ham, sliced bread, cereal, fruit and yogurt and lots of CAKE !! The plastic cups for fruit juice weren't appealing at all either. It seems a shame that the bottom floor where the breakfast room is isn't utilised more as it's baron with no purpose, no bar or amenities,it seems a such a waste. I hope some of the comments will be seen by management as constructive criticism rather than a moan. We did manage to have a nice trip away but next time would stay nearer to the city in the hub of it with more amenities around. You can walk to the city from the hotel in about 30 mins.... not the 15 that some reviews have said, also don't catch a train to Campo di Marte station from Florence - Santa Maria Novello (main station) to get to the hotel and then try to walk to the hotel from there, as it again would take 30-40 mins, not 15 as suggested by one reviewer ! Not easy to find and not easy pulling a case ! Ended up getting a taxi costing 15 euros.... hence the explanation at the beginning of this review about using the bus instead ! Learn from our mistake ! Hope this helps anyone going here.
