Sheraton Essen Hotel4.0 out of 5.0

This hotel is right next to the Philharmonie, which is very practical if you are visiting a concert. The hotel was clean and quiet. The breakfast buffet was ample and the amenities are o.k. The major gripe is that there is no free wifi in the room. You have to go to the lobby for that. Otherwise it costs 14€/day! Amazing that a luxury hotel chain like Sheraton still lives in the Stone Age in that regard. A major disadvantage!
I spent 6 months at this hotel on business, and as an SPG Platinum member I was able to experience the best sides of this property. The first impression I had of this hotel is of an overall building design that clearly shows that it is from a different era and areas of the hotel just looking & feeling correspondingly dated. All clean and well maintained in general...but dated. Another first impression, and one that is lasting, is that the fitness area is tiny, stocked with old cardio equipment and particularly a "strength" area that is very lacking. In short, atrocious and not at all on par with what many competitors offer these days. Finally, getting from the underground parking garage is a really cumbersome trek. One either needs to schlepp one's things down and up several flights of stairs or make due with a mini-elevator that must have been designed for asparagus body-types. Two is definitely company in that lift. All other initial impressions regarding room quality, amenities and services were on par with competing hotels, and to be very frank we shopped around aggressively in the early weeks of our stay to compare, stay at and do deals with other hotels. It was also in those early weeks that other and very positive aspects of this Sheraton emerged, which clearly differentiated them from their competitors and that ultimately led us to remain there for the duration. Indeed, it was love at 2nd sight. This hotel is doing well in continuously investing in the modernization of the property. The executive lounge on the top floor is a well-catered area that I often enjoyed visiting at different times of the day, and the sports-dilemma was easily sorted by plenty of professional fitness facilities in the vicinity of the hotel. Also, the newer, modernized rooms, which I found to always be on the park-side of the hotel, were simply well-designed and a pleasure to work and rest in. However, what really sets them apart was the consistently good service received across the different customer touch points. On this note, I want to particularly compliment Mr. Mohamad Kanaan, the concierge, and Mrs. Suzi Anar, the bartender, both of whom have been with this hotel for a very long time, and whose interactions with guests were impressive in their professionalism and their strong and authentic customer-service behavior on display. That was great. Would I return to this hotel for private and / or business stays. For sure! And I also recommend the Sheraton Essen to other road-warriors and long-term stayers as their preferred base in and around that region.
This hotel is wonderful. It's staffed well, managed well, it's clean, has a great bar and breakfast. It's a couple minutes from the hauptbahnhof (main train station) and has great restaurants surrounding it. I love a centrally located hotel that has parking for a large vehicle (15m). I look forward to staying again.
I was only here for the night, arrived late. The guy at reception was friendly and competent, even though it was the late. The room was comfy and clean. The hotel is well- located from the train station. (Rest I cannot comment on as not used.)
I had two day meetings in the building next door. The breakfast buffet was nice and the cappuccino was acceptable. The staff was very polite and attentive. My room had two double beds, which were comfortable. The bathroom was quite large, especially for Germany. The wifi cost money, so I did not use it.
I'm still amazed when I come across hotels charging extra for wifi, in this case almost 17 euros per day! Maybe 20 years ago this was normal but not now. Otherwise, this was a clean, modern room. Bar staff were excellent and the breakfast was spectacular: served right next to the park, everything fresh and delicious.
Had an ok stay for last few stays. I travel to Essen regularly and stayed with Sheraton many times before. Beds are nice, and location is superb. Essen is a nice city when you invest time to explore it. A few things you should be willing to accept when you go to sheraton in Essen: WIFI: this is the only hotel I know that (over)charges for WIFI. It offers WIFI in the lobby for free and only 30min in your hotelroom. If you want to purchase access it costs you 19,90(!!!) per 24 hours. Insane rates and very outdated. Internet is such a basic thing, you dont ask your guests to get free tapwater from the lobby and ask them to pay 20 euro to use the tap on your room to shower, right? Hospitality: the staff is actually quite nice, espexially at the bar, yet be prepared that hospitality of staff at the reception is poor. You have to be lucky to see who is there to greet you. There is only a few that look at you as a returning guest and are happy you arrive, but unfortunately most dont even remember or care, even if you arrive there on a weekly basis. They often simply look annoyed to help or very unhappy. After a long trip, don't count on a warm welcome from them. Room facilities: the rooms are outdated except for the bed and bathrooms. Bring an extension cable if you want to charge your laptop or phone anywhere else then on one point in the room as it doesnt offer you any other possibility in the room. I will update my review in a month or so or if any big changes occur, yet this is based on last few months of visits.
We had four nights stay during interpack, the hotel was good, clear and maintained.. mostly staff was very friendly and ready to serve... except one beautify lady (front office manage) who was angry one day with all guests... may she had bad morning...
Unless you sign up for their rewards program, you can only get free wifi in the lobby. Otherwise you have to pay for it. Sounds a little backward. However, this hotel is comfortable, close to downtown, and is situated near a beautiful park. If you are going to the concert hall next door, there is even a glass walkway that takes you there directly from the hotel. The breakfast buffet is amazing, so I guess that makes up for the lack of wifi, kind of.
We stayed only for 1 night, the room and the bed were big enough for the 4 of us and clean. However the hotel have parking space in front of the hotel but we could not park our rented car there. Instead we were suggested to park somewhere else, because the hotel's parking space is not free even for their guests. And as for the internet service,it's not free.So no free wifi,no free parking space, and all the TV channels were all in German,no international channels such as BBC,CNN,HBO,Fox or even children channels. If we wanted to watch international channels,we had to pay.I feel like this is such a rip off. Sheraton is an international chain hotel, please reconsider to improve their service in Sheraton Essen. Because customer satisfaction should be their priority. So this message goes to the hotel management, please improve your services....free wifi, free parkin space, free international TV channels.
