Holiday Inn Express Essen - City Centre3.0 out of 5.0

The hotel location is very near the city center (walking distance), which of course is convenient. Reasonable priced car park is also offered by the hotel. This is an "old style" HI Express so rooms good do with an update however they were clean and everything functioned as it should do. Breakfast is basic but sufficient. Staff not as friendly as I'm used to at IHG hotels, but okay.
Stayed at this hotel on a business trip and can´t recommend it at all. Check in took forever as there was only one associate at prime check-in time at 6PM and he took forever to take care of each guest. The room was very uncomfortable and claustrophobically small. There was not enough space for my luggage, to work or even to move around. The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows were awful and there were a full five clothes hangers (for a 5 night stay that´s not enough). Breakfast was very basic and limited. Tables were rarely cleared as staff seemed overwhelmed. Will definitely not stay here again.
This hotel is good spot to check-in, sleep, eat and check-out... Really easy access to the City of Essen as well as to highways. Hotel provides a parking that is located right under the hotel. The Fromt Desk attendants were professional and abel to help at any time. We can not complain about the room, however I didn't feel comfortable in the hallway as there was a buildification going on. The breakfast was on fire. A lot of selections, and huge area that accommodates big crowds so we enjoyed breakfast. Nice hotel, but still has a room for improvement. Thank you 😊
We (my sister, her two kids and I) stayed three nights in the hotel and on the 2nd day I took a sandwich and banana from breakfast as snack for the kids. So waitress, who I recognized from the morning before to be not the friendly type, said to me that taking food from the retaurant is not permitted and that there were signs all over which I've never seen but might be there. It's not like I've packed a picnic basket and it goes without saying that it's not recommended but all hotel stayers would usually take a banana or snack from any hotel and if kids are involved then they should just ignore or at least say it in a friendly manner. Otherwise the stay was good and the rest of the staff was friendly and helpful.
The hotel was fine. Everything was clean and the breakfast was complete, but the size of the room was miniature, we barely fit. We are four, but we have never had such a little room. But as an option it was good
This is a uninspiring business hotel. There are only two noteworthy things: -the a/c is non-functional, just delivering air of the same temperature as the room/hallway has when you turn the a/c off. The problem is structural, they checked to other rooms, same thing. Avoid during the summer season if you cannot sleep in hot rooms. -the breakfast is subpar compared to other hotels of this price range im germany. Small choice, low quality. When I have a choice I will not come back.
It was a pleasant surprise to discover this hotel. We stayed over for a night, we had a room on the 3rd floor, it was quiet, very clean with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was ok and the stuff very friendly. We recommend it.
We were surprised to be told the AC was not working in the hotel when at check-in we asked for a room on the sunny side overlooking the pleasant square with grass and trees. We took the room anyway but did find it hot when we came back to the room each day and found the windows closed. Despite the quiet location there was disturbing noise from delivery trucks in the morning. The reception staff serve also in the adjacent bar and it took a long time to get someone to the reception at night. Location is good for the city centre.
I have stayed in this hotel for ten days. The main problem was the level of service. During check in, while the room was prepaid, I have been informed that they have not received any payment. They did not even tried to check twice about this issue. I had to speak with my travel agent and resend them the confirmation of the payment by email. The same happened with a colleague of mine next day. ( they did not even care to apologize about it) Rooms are basic, same was breakfast. Overall an average hotel.
Came here for the Motor Show and how lucky to stay in such a great hotel . All the staff are so friendly but llke ( sorry if I have got your name slightly wrong ) is a complete star. Nothing was ever too much trouble when we were asking for advice and great company whilst we were at the bar . Location great for shopping and eating .
