Picked holiday inn express because it is a brand we have used in the past and found to them to be good. This one is not good. Receptionist was unhelpful from the start telling us our room would be ready at 2pm but when we returned at 2:15pm we were told it was not ready, no apologies given. When we eventually were given our room and went to it, it was still being cleaned, and due to the size of the “family” room there we had to wait outside for the cleaner to pass as there was no space inside the room with the sofa bed out. We found the room very small and some of the fixtures have clearly seen better days. The small double bed was comfortable and the shower room clean and serviceable. We would not recommend this room to a family but might be okay for a couple at most if you’re just using the room as a base. Would not stay at this hotel again, which is a shame as the hotel location was very good.
We drove up from Frankfurt/Main to spend a couple of days with some close friends who live in Muelheim. Location & price seemed reasonable, price included buffet breakfast & wi-fi but not the underground parking - that was 11 Euros extra per day. We were on the 3rd floor, room size was average but certainly clean, only a few hangars in the wardrobe but not drawers for other smaller items. Each side of the bed were no power sockets to charge mobile phones. The small sized double bed - the mattress felt like a camping bed! The breakfast buffet was quiet adequate with a good range of breads, pastries, cereal, yogurt and fruit as well as cold meats and cheeses. Bit disappointing was e.g. only warm to cold boiled eggs available, no choice of scrambled , fried or poached! The single toaster ( 4 slices ) was far too slow and inadequate when you have ca. hundred guests for breakfast! Our keycard for the room lost it's 'coding' twice within 48 hrs!
Spent a couple of nights there, sleep quality was ok as there was no noise coming from outside. Knew that it was without gym, still, having one, would make it a very good hotel. On the other hand it is really centrally located, walking distance to a big shopping-mall and the city center.
Stopped here while in Essen for work and found it better than I expected. The rooms are a decent size and clean while the rest of the hotel is tidy. Breakfast is buffet style and adequate. They have a good range of breads, pastries, cereal, yogurt and fruit as well as cold meats. Location wise it’s just outside the city centre, so a little quieter for sleeping but only a few minutes walk into the city. As it’s an express, the facilities are limited but you know that when booking so can’t complain. I would definitely stop here again when working in Essen.
Pretty standard hotel close to the `Berliner Platz` U bahn station. The rooms are not very spacious but clean. The level of noise was really ok - nothing to complain about here. The wifi was working ok, the breakfast selection pretty limited. Especially the coffee was awful (cheap and watery filter coffee). Also of note - if you are traveling by car - they have an underground carpark but they charge for use. Overall, an average hotel. I suppose, that one would work for a short business trip. Just don`t expect anything special.
From the courteous receptionists to the fine breakfast buffet this hotel is an excellent value. It is conveniently located near the Berlinerplatz-close to a major shopping mall, U Bahn, several theatres and the city center. I will come back again.
The hotel location is very near the city center (walking distance), which of course is convenient. Reasonable priced car park is also offered by the hotel. This is an "old style" HI Express so rooms good do with an update however they were clean and everything functioned as it should do. Breakfast is basic but sufficient. Staff not as friendly as I'm used to at IHG hotels, but okay.
Stayed at this hotel on a business trip and can´t recommend it at all. Check in took forever as there was only one associate at prime check-in time at 6PM and he took forever to take care of each guest. The room was very uncomfortable and claustrophobically small. There was not enough space for my luggage, to work or even to move around. The bed was uncomfortable, the pillows were awful and there were a full five clothes hangers (for a 5 night stay that´s not enough). Breakfast was very basic and limited. Tables were rarely cleared as staff seemed overwhelmed. Will definitely not stay here again.
This hotel is good spot to check-in, sleep, eat and check-out... Really easy access to the City of Essen as well as to highways. Hotel provides a parking that is located right under the hotel. The Fromt Desk attendants were professional and abel to help at any time. We can not complain about the room, however I didn't feel comfortable in the hallway as there was a buildification going on. The breakfast was on fire. A lot of selections, and huge area that accommodates big crowds so we enjoyed breakfast. Nice hotel, but still has a room for improvement. Thank you 😊
We (my sister, her two kids and I) stayed three nights in the hotel and on the 2nd day I took a sandwich and banana from breakfast as snack for the kids. So waitress, who I recognized from the morning before to be not the friendly type, said to me that taking food from the retaurant is not permitted and that there were signs all over which I've never seen but might be there. It's not like I've packed a picnic basket and it goes without saying that it's not recommended but all hotel stayers would usually take a banana or snack from any hotel and if kids are involved then they should just ignore or at least say it in a friendly manner. Otherwise the stay was good and the rest of the staff was friendly and helpful.
