Yes this isn't a flash resort but it doesn't pretend to be one either. It's a great little place to stay with very friendly staff. It would be nice, however, if the managers who are often present took the time to say hello. We were there six days and were never acknowledged. Breakfast isn't enormous but adequate. Room was well maintained.
The previous managers, Audrey and Greg left in August last year and coming back you can certainly see the difference. The care and attention to detail and customer service is seriously lacking. What was a lovely place to stay and eat and drink is no more.
Sunset Bungalows is a 2-3 star resort and is not value for the price paid. Dark Room, Air conditioning does not work properly, food is 50/50 at best, line is crap and mattress needs replacing, towels smell funny. Not a nice experience. If all bedding and towels were replaced this would be a much better location. Local staff are lovely which makes it difficult to give a 1 star but that's what I feel it deserves at this price. Stayed in a waterfront bungalow.
My husband and I just returned from a trip to Vanuatu and were supposed to stay at sunset for 4 days from 27 December till 31st. It was so bad and so depressing that we checked out after 2 days and went to coco beach resort. To start with there was a massive confusion over booking and rates despite having exchanged several emails before coming, this took half an hour to sort out when we reached the resort (it’s not a proper resort by the way). Anyway things happen and it got sorted so we let that go, no big deal. Now the room was Ok but everything felt dirty. Balcony overlooked lagoon which was overwater and you cannot swim as there is no approach to the water. Just look at it if it looks pretty. The room smelled and there were insects everywhere in the room, on the tea coffee service table, bedside tables, coffee table- everywhere. The swimming pool was dirty for the 2 days we were there and we were told the guy was supposed to come and clean it but didn’t turn up so he is being called. I think the day we left it got sorted but not sure. No drinking water in the room and bare minimum toiletries in the bathroom. The biggest turn off was the place itself, other than going to the restaurant and sitting in your room there was absolutely nothing you can do there. It’s bungalow after another in a straight line and few step to the restaurant. We had dinner the first night at the restaurant and my steak was dry and over cooked. For the price it was terrible. The next day we hired a car and were out the whole day as we didn’t want to stay inside. That night tired we decided to order food in room. Placed an order for chicken wings and garlic bread with hummus from the very limited room service menu that has only snacks. After 10 minutes we got a call that they are out of chicken wings, we then changed it to a sandwich. When the food arrived the garlic bread was on its own. No explanation. When I called to enquire about the hummus that was to accompany it as per the menu I was told they were out of chick peas and so no hummus. That’s it!! The staff was nice and courteous but clueless. I felt sorry for them. All through our stay never saw anyone resembling a manager even though the Chinese resort owners we always seen hovering around the reception area no one approached us to ask us how we were getting on and if we had problems or apologise about the pool- we had let the reception staff know that we are unhappy with the services and the pool not workable and will be checking out early. However nobody from the management cared. The customer service was next to none. Last leg of our stay we stayed at cocomo resort almost next to it for 3 days and it was fabulous. No complaints whatsoever- so better I stay elsewhere than waste time here. I travel a lot and having been a part of the hospitality business myself always try and let go of minor things but this was beyond hopeless. Never again!!
We were booked to stay at Sunset Bungalows for six nights. We reluctantly stayed for three nights whilst we sourced alternative accommodation. The Sunset Bungalows website and advertising in its rooms clearly states the following : ‘A pool with a waterfall to swim in and relax by’ the reality is : ‘ a dirty pool with the pump not working, a slimy fake waterfall , rotten wooden loungers x 4 with ripped old dirty cushions’ ‘Enjoy snorkeling in the lagoon - gear provided’ the reality is: ‘ no snorkeling allowed in the lagoon’ Aside from this false advertising other aspects of the accommodation were also highly unsuitable. This included: No hot water for showering Dark room with poor lighting Stained and dusty mosquito canopy over the bed Towel rail fell off the wall after 1 night Uncomfortable outdoor seating Thin and worn bedding Springs poking through the mattress Dining room set for two places every day even though we were a group of four and no attempt made to move furniture for us . The staff were very friendly and the food lovely - this review is no reflection on these people The male manager was unhelpful, rude and arrogant when we came to him with our concerns - in fact it was only with great reluctance that he fronted up, initially he kept sending the young receptionist back to us while he hid around the corner - a totally unprofessional and unacceptable way to treat your guests
We were booked to stay at Sunset for 6nights and only ended up staying for 3 nights (and the three nights we stayed was very reluctant until we could sort out other accommodation). Sunset bungalows does not deliver what it advertises and is completely misleading. They advertise - Snorkeling in the lagoon - when we arrived we were told this is not possible. No one is allowed in the lagoon. A tropical setting swimming pool with waterfall feature. Biggest lie of all.... the swimming pool was by the main road and was so horrendously dirty - it obviously has not been in use for days. The rotting wooden lounge chairs by the pool (4 in total) were uncomfortable looking and the cushions on them were ready for the dump. There was hardly any hot water for showers. Most of the time we had cold showers. The mattress was awful and springs were poking out - needed replacing. The linen needed up-grading - in terrible state. The white linen canopy/mosquito net was stained and dusty. The room was dark and lighting was terrible at night. The chairs on balcony were very uncomfortable - the room offered no opportunity to sit and relax. This is not a peaceful and tranquil setting as the resort sits on a main road and is very noisy. But most frustrating and disappointing of all was the manager and his complete lack of customer service. The resort is now under new management/ownership and they are not interested in customer satisfaction. We complained upon arrival and asked for a refund as we felt mislead in their advertising of what we could do. The manager was not interested in speaking with us.... he wouldn’t front up initially and when he did there was a complete lack of professionalism. He said there would be no refund. We spoke to a few other guests in the resort and they were all complaining about the same things.... Needless to say we left the resort out of pocket... and stayed somewhere else! There are definitely so many amazing places to stay in Vanuatu but this isn’t one of them! The staff and food were excellent - so lovely and helpful.
Firstly the ownership of this so called Resort has changed hands from what trip advisor advertises and I also truly believe the reviews are about the employees and not the so called Resort. - This is not a resort, a resort is a place where you are entertained. - Our toilet would not flush no 2’s, took over 10 attempts or more - Hot water was limited and very low water pressure, basin tap when turned on stopped all water. Your shower consisted of scalding hot or freezing cold. The hot water heater is extremely small to supply and not designed for a continuous shower. These were adjusted to the minimum to save money. - The pool in the picture looks great but during our stay it was cloudy and over chlorinated and unswimmable for 3 days, we went elsewhere to swim at our expense. - All pool furniture had various stages of wood rot and chair cushions were decompossing. Not enough chairs to cover the bungalows and rooms. 6 people swam here in my 10 day stay. - Rooms extremely dark at night due to basic lights - Rooms are very out dated and grubby - Mattresses old and uncomfortable - Canopy over bed big water marks and grubby stains - Many guests were under the impression that you could snorkel in the water off the balcony, this is not correct, it is a lagoon water has no visibility. - Smoking is permitted in restaurant divided by plastic sheet. Also in any room on any balcony which fills your room. - Bookings came and left the same or next day due to unacceptable conditions. Spoke to new Manager and staff in regards to the above asked for discount for inconvenience this was denied. We had already paid for our accommodation upfront no where for us to go. If you are paying over $200 a night I suggest you shop around, there is better accomodation around.
Enjoyed our stay at Sunset Bungalows. Not a fancy place, but very clean, comfortable beds, and good food service. All in all, a positive experience, very friendly and helpful staff, a good value for a reasonable price.
We spent 8 days in the honeymoon suite at Sunset bungalows and absolutely loved every minute of it, the room was tastefully decorated with quality finishes and was serviced and cleaned each day, we slept with our bi-fold doors open every night and was so lovely to wake up to a view over the lagoon and to have the beautiful breeze at night. The staff there were absolutely wonderful and were happy to do whatever it took to make our stay memorable, the food at the restaurant was fantastic, we did try all the major restaurants and places to eat whilst in Vanuatu but always loved staying in and having a beautiful meal prepared by our chef, you have to try the pork belly absolutely delicious! There's a happy hour at the bar from 5-7pm with some beautiful cocktails on offer, if you are more into a nice cold beer then you really have to try the local beer "Tusker" best beer I've tasted. Also another thing not related to the resort but a must is to wait until you get to Vanuatu to change your money, we would have saved plenty of we knew beforehand but we did ours at Brisbane airport and lost out big time, "Goodies" in Port Villa had fantastic rates to buy and sell. Overall it was a life changing experience, we're even looking at moving over there in the near future :)
We just returned from a lovely holiday in Vanuatu. We were supposed to travel to Vanuatu in May but decided to postpone our holiday due to the threat of Cat 5 Cyclone Donna. The management of the hotel we were booked to stay at on Tanna Island, White Grass Beach Resort, were very happy for us just to postpone our trip and use our accommodation at a future date which is what we did. The management of Sunset Bungalows were not as understanding even though we had just been through Cat 4 Cyclone Debbie which hit the North Queensland coast in April and were not keen to repeat the experience quite so soon. We were told by the General Manager that we could only use our accommodation at a future date if we stayed an extra two nights and booked directly through the hotel rather than booking through Expedia. We agreed to this as the only other alternative was for us to claim the cost of our accommodation through our travel insurance and pay an excess. Having said that, we really enjoyed our stay at Sunset Bungalows. The staff were wonderful and the setting was beautiful. Particularly enjoyed going to sleep listening to the sound of the water lapping outside our villa. I found the local Vanuatu people to be very friendly and eager to help. However, the actions of management were disappointing to say the very least.
