We only came for a meal. We had the curry special and another friend went with the meat platter. The food was so good, you get quite a lot for your money, and the staff very friendly. We enjoyed eating out on the deck. Look forwatd to trying more from the menu next time.
my teenagers have never been to Vanuatu before and they enjoyed themselves, being very central there is a lot of freedom to go places and not have to wait for buses or taxis. . The rooms are ok, we understand that it is about to be refurbished and the service was very good and the staff very friendly and helpful.
Came in may with family stayed in the penthouse as it has 2 rooms, after a drama booking the room the new GM Bettina came through and took over, as usual we had a awesome time even though cyclone donna tried to blow us away, the staff awesome the GM is keen on turning the grand around, these people over in vila would give you there heart if they could get it out, we hired a car to drive the island and stopped in a village called EPAU and were greeted like kings we drove back to town and bought the village heaps of food and make new friends, just like the friends from the grand hotel, Bettina we will be back soon so keep an eye out for that annoying email from us.
We were on the forth floor and the views were breath taking and changed each day. Because of the design of the hotel I feel every room would have a great view and even though its on a main road there was no noise. Beds were so comfortable and we all slept like babies. We had breakfast each morning in the hotels restaurant and you could either order from a menu or go all you could eat for 20vt. My husband and I mainly went all you can eat as he enjoyed tucking in to the steak or sausages and egg and I enjoyed the fruit and amazing made to order omelettes. Our coffee cups were never empty and a special thankyou to Sylvie for taking such good care of us and for educating us and answering all our questions about Vanuatu. I was worried I would feel self conscious using the pool as it is so open but this wasn't an issue and we enjoyed many hours relaxing down on the pool area. Even here you have an amazing view of the bay and the many boats passing by. Staff here are also amazing and couldn't do enough to help us and make our day brighter( Thankyou Yohan and Alice ) The restaurant food was delicious and we enjoyed the theme nights especially the Middle Eastern which was nice and spicy. We absolutely loved our stay here and look forward to seeing the planned update of the hotel. Thankyou to all the staff who really put us in a holiday mood and made us feel so relaxed and in a holiday mood.
We decided to stay in downtown for one night before moving onto our resort further away. Didn't expect it to be a luxurious hotel as it was Port Vila, but still very nice, a little dated. Staff were fantastic, from the security guard at the door and the lady at the front desk. We mentioned the next day we were going to visit Iririki Island, offered to have our bags sent there for us (we were only going on a day trip). Room was nice and spacious not very modern but still good. However as the kettle was UK plug and the wall sockets were AU and US, wasn't till we found the iron in the cupboard that had the converter plug connected to it to change to AU. Probably would've been good to either have the kettle in Au/US power, or keep the converter in a more prominent location. We were only on the first floor but the view across the bay was amazing, you can see no room had an obstructed view. Could not hear any noise from the street outside. Balcony was comfortable to sit outside and have breakfast, but there were a lot of dead (thank god they were dead) bugs around. Pool area as well very nice and modern and very quiet. Not much of a gambler but the casino was clean and inviting. Location - perfect. Right smack bang in the middle of downtown. Though very easy to miss. Thinking if a hotel was called "Grand" there would at least be a "grand" entrance. Right next to the hotel is the jetty to get across to Iririki, and about a 2 minute walk to the 24 hour fruit/veg market, and the Bon Marché supermarket. Heaps of restaurants nearby, french bakery and a few tour operators (though I found dealing with the bus drivers, even the hotels, cheaper and more flexible than dealing direct with tour operators). The one concerning thing, was when we left our luggage with the front desk when we checked out. We left our bag with a ticket so when we came back we were meant to show the ticket to the security card and collect our luggage. Now I don't remember if it was the same security guard and he remembered us (if it was, fantastic!) but all we did was ask for our luggage and didn't even ask for my ticket, just gave us the bag (ours was the only bag there). So don't know if he remembered us, or anyone could've showed up and said picking up a bag and would have just handed it over. If you want to spend a night or two in downtown, this would be the perfect location.
You will not see hot water unless you open the taps & let them run for 10-15 mins (not an exaggeration) Absolutely no secutity from balcony, at that price i expect basic room security. A local football team was staying there at the time & they were running back & fwd between rooms across the roof & jumping the balconies. This occured over 2 days & not one person made any attempt to stop them. The balcony door lock was broken & held in place with double sided tape - yes tape. This place is not worth the money & i have visited PV some 15 times staying in various accommodation. Corridors smell like the carpet is wet.
I had the misfortune to be stranded for a week at a remote Vanuatu island during Severe Tropical Cyclone Donna. On reaching Port Vila I was booked into the Grand. The lovely GM looked after me upgrading my room ensuring that I could relax and unwind after a traumatic experience. The room was large with views across the harbour to Iririki Island. The staff were friendly and service great and the restaurant wonderful.
Just reading some of ur reviews we stayed twice a few years ago and found all staff very friendly and helpful including the casino lady who we enjoyed speaks to, maybe She enjoyed speaking to us as my husband had on his kilt one evening. Euan and Irene glashow
There is no way the porters are going to let you carry your own bags to your room even though it is only hand luggage. Yep, it will be tipping time when we get there! So I grab a few coins and hand them over. I get the visual count and the lengthened ookaaaaay as our porter walks away. Welcome to Port Vila! I hadn't stayed at the Casino before, but this time it was only AUD 80 more than the Melanesian for 3 nights on lastminute. No contest. The fittings, decor and paint are a little tired. Room staff are very friendly and appreciate a tip for their good work. Vanuatu is not really a big tipping island and Aussies are not known as big tippers. The difference in living standards puts a little pressure on the traveller to help out though. I'm not looking for fawning displays of gratitude, just leave the attitude at home. Apart from our initial greeting, the staff were courteous, friendly and very helpful. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon, the hotel was nearly empty, dining room deserted and you could have your choice of poolside chaise lounge. Even locals outnumbered tourists in the casino. A very different story in the tourist season I guess. You can purchase a very nice bottle of St Emilion wine from Bordeaux for around AUD30 at a nearby bottle shop. Then you can sit on your balcony and take in the magnificent view of Iririkki and the harbour.
