Always nice to pop into the Grand and its air conditioned atmosphere. Rooms have spectacular views of the Port Vila bay and are very clean and tidy with all amenities. The restaurants food is always up to standard fresh and crisp. A great hotel to transit in.
I’ve stayed here several times and it doesn’t let me down. It’s close to the business district, staff are attentive but not overbearing and there is a pretty good restaurant. In fairness it’s a bit tired, but it’s clean, there is a smokey smell in the lobby but there is a casino and the doors get opened. I took the family this time and the pool area was nice. Food as always is generous portions and generally good value. Look forward to my next visit.
The pool was lovely, the wedges and beer were really welcome. The casino however was nasty. It was like walking into a cloud of smoke - filled with smokers - yuck. It was so bad my eyes were burning after about 5 minutes just waitin to get money changed.
Nothing particularly wrong with the hotel but it does seem a little tired, and the wifi in the lobby is a bit flakey. It's location is convenient if you are staying in Port Vila for a conference or meeting at the convention centre. No need to find the gym, just climb the stairway across the road that goes up to the Australian High Commission and the convention centre. Beware when crossing the street though as it is usually gridlocked with mini buses. Breakfast in the hotel had a fairly good range, although the croissant were pretty disappointing.
We loved our lunch in the restaurant at the Grand Hotel. The meals were delicious and beautifully presented. The hotel facilities were all lovely and clean. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Stunning view of the harbour and Iririki island.
The hotel is well located on the foreshore, with good restaurants close by, particularly Le Cafe de Village Restaurant which is right next door. That being said the hotel food is of a high standard too. There’s plenty of money changers and ATM’s close by and the exchange rate being paid at the money changers is pretty close to the market price. The rooms all have a view over the water and are clean and spacious. The casino is small but functional, though it can get quite smokey. The pool area is nice, though the pool is not very deep. There is also no beach swimming area, just the pool. There’s plenty to do just walking distance from the hotel including sailing cruises, local markets to wander through and helicopter rides, which I’d personally recommend trying. The hotel exterior could do with a good clean and I would prefer a pool with a deep end, but overall I couldn’t complain about my stay here.
The views from the Grand are spectacular, but the hotel is in need of some love and attention and be moved into the 21st century. The staff are very helpful and friendly, but forgetful when it comes to drink orders. The Grand Hotel has a great location in the centre of town, but the noise and fumes are a little off putting when you step outside.
They say a good business is all about having good people. And tourism and hospitality especially is very dependent on good people. Given that is true then The Grand is at the absolute top of the tree. We stayed there a week between Christmas and New Year when the hotel was full and the service was impeccable and always very fast. We could not fault it. And it started before we even got there. I booked through the hotel direct and not through one of these online agencies and I found Panorama rooms available that the agencies had said were sold out. I enquired about the sort of electrical plug needed for appliances like laptops etc and they replied promptly with photographs and advised that they had adaptors if we needed them. They organised touristy things like Zipline Toour bookings with no fuss and had them charged back to the room. The room we had was excellent ... bed great, shower great, sofa etc great, TV let me watch the Boxing Day Test cricket from Australia, fridge kept the beer really cold. And the views ... unsurpassed, could not be beaten. If I have to find fault one tiny concern was that after leaving the swimming pool you walked through the general foyer/lounge etc on polished tiles and I was a little concerned that others, not myself, would slip on the water I was dripping everywhere. I don't know the answer to that. Without doubt The Grand made our holiday in Port Vila just perfect. The service and the people were exceptional every single one of them. I cannot see how I would ever stay anywhere else.
We stayed at the Grand Casino for one night, as we were catching a flight out to one of the islands the next day. Due to this we booked the cheapest room. However, this still equated to $400 NZ, so was expecting something better than what we got. There was no hot water, which was a surprise. The room was very old, dated & in serious need of upgrading. The main toilet in the lobby was broken & very unclean. The patrons were charged more for drinks than customers to the casino - tusker beer was 550vt, but was advertised outside the casino as 400vt. The bar to the hotel is the same one. However, as always in Vanuatu, the staff were lovely. The breakfast was also good.
The room we stayed has a great view of the whole harbour and Iririki Island. Nothing beats the sound of boats running in early hours of the morning, if you have your balcony door open. Food is great. Staff well mannered. Atmosphere is so warm. They throw a mean Breakfast Buffet. Great view of the pool, haven't had the chance to jump in yet, maybe next time we there I will.
