Had to call many times re more toilet paper and towels-- shower is way too small

Everything was excellent at the hotel, though the bed could have been a little more comfortable - still it was by no means uncomfortable.

The receptionists were great. Rooms were clean. One block to the Royal Mile.

Very Clean, Pleasant staff, Great location, Nice perk to have breakfast for free

I find this a tricky review to write. The good parts are it was superbly located and a full breakfast was included. the WIFI always worked albeit a hassle to get a we code each day. But it seemed immensely expensive for what we received:very small rooms, 1 elevator for a hotel that had 4 floors and approximately 80+ rooms; AC that was not cold enough; room key cards that didn't always work. If it had not been August during the "fringe festival" I would have walked out.....but it was and after immense searching or over 2 months, it was the best I could find. I only recommend it when everything of similar or better quality is already booked.

Check-in was very smooth and efficient. The hotel while being closer to Holyrood is still very centrally located. We could see Salisbury Crag from our window. The palace and the Royal Mile only a few minutes stroll from the hotel. The hotel staff were extremely personable helpful and knowledgeable. Rooms were very clean and the included buffet breakfast hearty enough to get you through until dinner. Our stay was a very positive experience. Only one sour note plenty of bath towels but no wash cloths. That aside our stay was delightful!

This hotel filled its role perfectly. Location was excellent. Included breakfast was great. Staff was helpful and stored our bags after check out until we left on a late flight. While the bed was not that comfortable and the room seemed to not be vacuumed when we checked in, everything else was great. Exactly what you should get for the money and this type of hotel.

This Holiday Inn Express is perfectly located for visiting old town and the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and everything else within walking distance. It was very secure, quite, had room air conditioning and I found the bed very comfortable. The mattress was firm and not the overly soft pillow top mattresses found in the U.S. the breakfast in the morning was fine. I would stay here again and liked it better than the other HI Express in newtown. That one was okay, but this one was better.

The HI Express chain is consistent. In Edinburgh the hotel was a bit expensive but breakfast is included. Wifi was also included but it was so slow as to be worthless

Only problem we had was with the meaning of a standard room. A standard room in this hotel means two twin beds not a single double bed.

The room was clean, the staff pleasant, and the location superb for seeing the sights in Edinburgh.

Staff member, Michelle was lovely and patient. She offered great tips around the area. The room size was very disappointing. 3 adults with a small double bed and pull out futon type couch that took up the entire room. The mattresses were really flimsy too. They didn't have a safe to lock up valuables and the alarm was on the tv. But the room was clean and short walk around town.

The room and the hotel is very basic (tiny lobby, and in the room no closets or drawers; no luggage stands; no shampoo or lotion; tiny end tables, no wakeup calls, etc.). But what is there is functional, clean, and comfortable. The location is extremely convenient, being 5 minutes walk to the intersection of Royal Mile and South Bridge St., and so close to Edinburgh University, restaurants, sightseeing, tourist attractions, shopping, transportation, and bars. A taxi trip to Waverly (train) station was 4 pounds, and to airport was 22 pounds. Reasonable breakfast -- all cold items except scrambled eggs and sausages. Staff is helpful. I will happily select it again.

The room wasn't very large, but it was very clean, and the surfaces were new and well cared for. The breakfast (in June 2011) was a continental-British hybrid: scrambled eggs, sausages, cereal, toast and other bread-y items, fruit, yoghurt, tea/coffee, juice. Everything tasted good and was fresh. The breakfast room was on the small side, which meant that if you hit the rush, it was at times difficult to find a table. Also, we had an unhappy experience getting directions from one of the receptionists who seemed unable to differentiate between left and right even when looking at a map. Everyone else, however, performed exceptionally. This hotel isn't pretentious, but offers a nice, neat, and straightforward experience. I would recommend it for people who expect reasonable quality out of their accommodation but who don't want to spend too much to get it. We definitely would go back.

A well located hotel, minutes (minute?) from the Royal Mile - very helpful staff - clean, comfortable and highly recommended.

Great location! Steps away from Edinburgh University with plenty of restaurants and pubs. Edinburgh Castle was a 7 minute walk from the hotel. The wi-fi access did not work which was frustrating. The pull-out sofa bed is not suitable for an adult but could be for a small child. Staff was helpful and accommodating.

Good location, clean rooms and very polite staff. Continental breakfast was very good.

We attended the Edinburgh Military Tatoo and thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Holiday Inn Royal Mile. We received excellent service from the front desk staff. The hotel itself was quiet and conveniently located with just a short walk to the royal mile and tour buses. I would definetly recommend this hotel as a base when visiting Edinburgh.

Walking distance from airport bus drop-off 1 1/2 blocks from Royal Mile, 2 blocks to our pick-up for tour to Scottish Highlands We walked to attractions along Royal Mile, Fringe street performers, and Military Tatoo.

It's hard to beat the service we've received at the Holiday Inn Express -- Royal Mile. While this hotel is advertised as "no frills," "budget," or "just-the-basics," that's certainly not what we experienced. From checkin to the present, our stay has been very pleasurable. To begin with, the evening desk clerk[...] was, I believe, the most helpful hotel receptionist I've ever encountered. He was every bit the concierge in a hotel that is not supposed to have a concierge service. From ordering us take-out Indian food (exceptional) to recommending tours, calling for taxis, fixing a stopped up sink, delivering a fan, helping us hook up to the Internet (and the list goes on), [...] and the staff at the HI Express - Royal Mile, bent over backwards to accomodate us during our stay. Exceptional and better than I've received in hotels that charge three times the price. Also, while it is billed as having a free Continental Breakfast, it had an impressive selection: scrambled eggs, sausages, several cereals, cheeses, fresh fruit, yogurt, croissants, toast, milk and juices. It was always a filling start to a busy day.The hotel is also centrally located close to the Royal Mile and taxi's are not necessarily needed. Just pop around the corner and hike the hill to most of Edinburgh's main attractions. Other hotels that boast the same locational advantages run three times the price (and tend to be not as friendly - as I found out when asking directions). This hotel will save you time and money when it comes to transportation. The entire hotel gets kudos for its attempts at reducing its carbon footprint. Most lights in the rooms are LED, instead of incandescent. Not to mention that there is no power in the room unless your key card is inserted in the power slot.... This eliminates the waste from lights left on when the customer is gone. The elevator also requires the room card to operate. This can be a bit tricky, but once you've got the hang of it, it does make a great deal of good sense and I applaud it.We did have a few snafu's during our stay, but the staff was courteous and quick to resolve all of the issues to our satisfaction. I really am impressed with this little hotel and have never given a higher recommendation. To top everything off....they have something I cannot get in the States.... BULMER'S PEAR CIDER. And [...] always had a cold bottle and a glass of ice waiting for me at the end of a long day. Ahhhhhhhh!
