I booked and paid for a room at Hotel de L'Europe, Corbigny for the night of 31st May through Hotels.com that didn't exist, we are requesting a refund from them. However on the plus side the Hotel owner was very helpful and found us a room at Hotel de France in Chatillon en Bazois for that night of the 31st May. While we were at the reception of the Hotel de L'Europe we booked a room there for the 2 following nights of 1st and 2nd June. At first all was well, then I realised that the beds in the room (room 6) both had plastic mattress protectors - I would expect plastic sheeting if I were in hospital or an old people's home but certainly not in a hotel of this standing. I remade the beds myself taking the plastic undersheet off. The Hairdryer was completely unusable - it fell apart in 3 pieces and would not stay in the 'ON' position because - I went to the Receptionist who came up to the room with me and tried to put it back together and told me that it works - it didn't. The water in the shower/bath was cool not even warm. The next issue was with the external shutters which wouldn't close, they have obviously never closed as the holder has been attached over the shutter itself. The curtains are totally inadequate and we were both disturbed by light from the street light and in the morning on both nights. We accepted that Saturday 1st June was a busy and very noisy night because of the holiday and we have efficient earplugs! We don't eat breakfast but wanted to have coffee/tea and were greeted with a bad tempered shrug from the young waitress who was obviously on her own and struggling with so many guests, she should not have been on her own - with a Breakfast room full of guests there should definitely have been more staff. On our second evening we arrived back to find the restaurant closed, which is understandable after the busy restaurant the previous evening - what we didn't expect was to find that the same young member of staff from breakfast was closing the hotel, locking it up, shutting and locking doors turning off lights, the place was dead, we couldn't even fill our drinking water bottle for the night. I believe we were the only people there that night of Sunday 2nd June. In the morning when we got up around 9am, nothing was open, no access to the Breakfast room and a cup of coffee, there was nothing and no one the place was dark and there were no lights on anywhere. We packed our bags and the same young lady arrived to take our payment. I had strong words with her in my broken French (she did not speak English) and was able to make her understand that this is a management problem and that she should never have been put under so much pressure. I understand that it was a national holiday weekend but if you are running a hotel you need staff all the time regardless - or you don't allow people to stay when the hotel is closed. I asked to have my bill printed out and was appalled to find that it was printed not on headed hotel paper but on a torn section of a poster for "Les Voix de Jerusalem 13-15 September". This was almost the last straw, I was very very angry and felt that I really had to let you know how badly this hotel is being run. Surely your reputation doesn't need this sort of review. We paid 151.08 euros in cash for 2 nights in this horrible hotel and there is no way we would ever recommend it to anyone, quite the opposite in fact.

· We arrived on bikes at 17.00. It was deserted and locked up. We were about to leave when a workman came out. Eventually he pointed out a sign in French saying to ring a number. We did and got an answerphone. Nobody rang back so before leaving we rang again. We were told that the key to get in and to our room was on the chute of a vending machine by the entrance. Inside was gloomy in the extreme. We got to our room and found that it was a double when we had booked a more expensive twin for two 70 year old males. We rang again and after 5 minutes a young woman arrived and took some time to find us a twin. In all we got to our room about an hour after first arriving. The fire instructions referred us in the event of fire to the management and reception. There was no such thing until the next morning. What we were supposed to do on the second of three floors in the event of fire was a mystery. There was another set of keys in the chute so presumably we and they had the place to ourselves for the night. Breakfast consisted of one croissant each and a baguette to cut , one cereal and jam that was so runny it covered your hands when it flowed off the bread. No cheese or ham. My friend asked for some honey and a piece of lemon. The extremely surly waitress said there was no honey. then brought some without comment. Apart from some oranges and a pressing machine the breakfast was the absolute minimum you could call a breakfast and yet cost €9.90. All of this cost us a premium €122 in total. A premium price for the worst hotel I’ve ever had. The Gault Millau recommended restaurant was closed as it was Monday so it seems that the place was just shut down and guests left to virtually fend for themselves. There was nobody to advise where we could get a meal. The impression given was that the management only care about the restaurant and don’t give a damn that the hotel reviews are generally poor to awful. An average score of 5 out of 10 for breakfast says it all and is something they could easily rectify if they cared about the service they provide. Being on bikes and requiring two beds we had a choice of one in the area so ignored the bad reviews. That was a big mistake. The fire situation is a definite hazard and should not be tolerated.

We called in with friends from our Car Tour. They catered for all of us at short notice. There was an extensive menu and the staff served a great choice of excellent food and drinks. The atmosphere was amazing.
