Spokane, in the heart of the Pacific Northwest’s ‘Inland Empire’, is an often overlooked gem of a city.
Surrounded by spectacular scenery it offers year-round outdoor adventures, from hiking, fishing, golf and rock climbing in the summer to skiing and sledding in winter. The city center is impressive too, with crashing waterfalls and splendid parks.
Spokane also has a rich history dating back thousands of years and the city played a huge role in the development of Washington and the Northwest. Today the city is home to museums, galleries, restaurants and clubs.
Spokane is a great place to visit at any time of the year. The summers are warm and dry and visitors head to the Inland Empire to explore the countryside.
The snows arrive in November and winter sports enthusiasts descend on Spokane. There are several resorts nearby, including the Mount Spokane Ski Resort, an hour’s drive from the city.
Spring and fall are great times to visit, as the area blooms back to life in spring and the foliage puts on a multi-colored show in fall.
Spokane hosts the Bloomsday Run on the first Sunday in May. The 7.5-mile run is one of the most popular in the world and attracts 40,000 participants. Hoopfest in June is the world’s largest 3x3 basketball tournament, with games all over town.

Spokane International Airport (GEG) is around five miles west of downtown. It has direct services to 17 cities around the US and handles 3.5 million passengers a year.
There are plenty of places to eat and drink at the airport, and there are wooden rocking chairs to relax in on each of the three concourses.
From the airport there are taxis, shuttles and buses into Spokane. There are eight car rental firms at the ground transportation center on concourse A.

The Spokane Transit Authority’s efficient bus service is based at the transportation plaza located in downtown Spokane.
It is possible to explore Spokane by bike although the weather and the hills can make things difficult. There are cycle lanes around town and the Centennial Trail runs along the Spokane River. You can also take a gondola ride over Spokane Falls.
If you want to venture further afield, Amtrak trains depart to and from Chicago and Portland/Seattle every day.
But the best way to get around Spokane and the surrounding area is by hire car. There are plenty of options at the airport and the city it not hard to navigate.
Riverfront Park was the site of the 1974 World's Fair. You can visit the impressive Spokane Falls which cascade through the city, follow the sculpture trail, visit the amusement arcade and get a picture of the 151ft clock tower that has become Spokane’s trademark.
Spokane was originally a Native American settlement and the area’s rich history is celebrated at the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture. Next door to the striking museum is Campbell House, which has mining-era exhibits.
The entertainment district in Spokane should not be missed. It is home to the wonderful Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, a 20-screen movie theater, the Bing Crosby Theater, named after the city’s most famous resident, and an array of bars and restaurants.
Visit the small farms of Green Bluff, 20 miles northeast of Spokane, for fruit festivals throughout the year. The events begin in June (strawberries) and continue until October (apples).
Spokane has a thriving gay scene and the city hosts the biggest Pride festival in eastern Washington in June and a gay and lesbian film festival in November.
