Once the medieval capital of Morocco, Fez is located in the Atlas Mountains. It is one of the most well preserved old-walled cities in the Arab world. Fez features historic architecture and museums juxtaposed against the modern amenities of the Ville Nouvelle. The former French colonial section of the city with its signature fountain is home to the wide tree-lined Avenue Hassan II, which is the main modern shopping district, and Complexe de Fez stadium.
Dating from the 8th century, the walled Fez el Bali medina with its ancient souk is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When you fly to Fez, you can see other points of interest, including the ornate Bou Inania Madrasa, the Merenid Tombs and the entrance to the Moulay Idriss II shrine. Dar al-Magna holds a weight-powered water clock dating from the 14th century. There are museums dedicated to woodcarving and Moroccan art. The University of al-Karaouine, the world s oldest continually operating college, is located in Fez.
Saiss Airport (FEZ) is situated approximately 8 miles south of the city. Annual events in town include the Moussem of Moulay Idriss, the Feztival of Amazigh, or Berber, Culture and the Feztival of Sufi Culture. The city s Mediterranean climate produces Summer highs in the upper 90s and Winter lows near 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
