The pub is 800 years old so expect floors in rooms to be uneven but has lots of character. Staff were very friendly throughout our 2 night stay in a double room. Our room was above bar so very noisy first night but this was also due to the public holiday for the 12th July marches - the second night was quieter. The room was extremely hot and stuffy though as central heating didn’t turn off until late at night so we had to leave bathroom door open to try to get air flow. Room was compact but all that is needed is a comfortable bed and size of room less important. Dobbins Inn is close to eating places but as a pub meals available here too. Breakfast was included and a big choice from porridge to bacon and eggs, with self serve cereal and yoghurt/fresh fruit. Right across from Carrickfergus castle. Parking outside but payable at certain times of the week/day.
I stopped here for four days with my friend from the 28 th May until the 1st of June and I have to say you could not find a friendlier more welcoming place to stay. From the second we arrived we were made to feel welcome indeed nothing was to much trouble for any of the staff. You can see they are doing lots of updating in the rooms and windows outside so if you are looking for a run of the mill premier inn type stay this is not for you. Yes the room was slightly dated but spotlessly clean with two very comfortable beds, the breakfast included in the price was really good value for money and fresh every day, when we explained we were vegetarian although there was no option for vegetarian sausages or bacon, the chef put extra mushrooms and extra eggs on my plate and there was plenty of cereal and jam and toast on offer. One evening we stayed for dinner and my friend took ill suddenly before dinner was served however we were were not charged for the meal which was so kind considering we cancelled a meal that was being cooked for us. The following night we again stayed for dinner as the vegetarian offer was limited due to a new menu being put together the following week there was nothing I wanted to eat so the chef offered to cook me a meal from scratch if I didnt mind waiting an extra 10 minutes. I have to say the pasta dish he cooked was delicious he even came out to see how my friend was feeling when they brought out her meal. We had such a lovely holiday we are planning to return next year. As for sleeping we had a really good nights sleep every night we stayed even though there was music and a lot of extra people there on the friday night the only noise we ever heard was someone going into the room next to ours. A big thank you to everyone for a very enjoyable stay,
We were staying in Carrickfergus for a few days and this place was recommended to us, so we had to try it. We were not disappointed! The food is all home made, this is not a reheat or microwave place, just great wholesome food! The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Also, the Guinness is to die for!
To start all seemed fine as we arrived early and the lady stored our bags for us. She allowed us to check in a little earlier than normal. We decided to have a breakfast as it was about 9am when we arrived. This is where alarm bells started to ring. I ordered special fry and my son ordered jam on toast. Mine was OK, however, my sons toast had mould on it. I didn't say anything because she was nice enough to store our bags for us, but I left the mouldy peice of jam on toast on the top of the plates in plain sight to see. No way was I eating breakfast here in the morning again. Checked in to a "double room" which you could barely walk round the bed (it most definitely should be a single room). First glance was.. Oh OK, dated but a looks OK. Comfy bed, tea and coffee etc. Then I started noticing lots of other things. Dirty walls, dirty skirting round plugs, mouldy tiles, dirty window handle, dirty shower attachments, wonky telly with wires hanging off the wall, and a strange funny musty smell about the place. On our second day in the afternoon our TV remote stopped working, so I popped to reception and asked for some new batteries for it. She was a bit ubrupt and said "well I only put this new one in the other day". She came to the conclusion that someone must have knocked the universal code out. Which I am gathering she meant me. So it is now the day I am leaving after being woken by the most noisiest banging from early this morning!!! Still with no TV remote and quite miffed off. Do not come to stay. Fab pub, beer and atmosphere downstairs, but please stop doing B&B, you do not have the attention to detail and cleanliness standards!
Great food comfortable bed very friendly and professional staff very interesting building sorry had to leave at short notice will definitely be back very central and quiet at night just minutes walk from castle pier restaurant coffee shop lovely walk along sea front
Loved our stay here. Staff, location, bartenders, breakfast were all fantastic. Very reasonably priced. Building is literally ancient, very historic, which was all the more reason to stay here. Would definitely recommend.
Once again an excellent meal at a very reasonable price. We both opted for the 2 course set price offer and both went for the steak. Cooked exactly as we both wanted and they were perfect. I opted for the champ and my partner, the garlic bites. Both again were excellent. Desserts were delicious - fruit crumble/cream for me and lemon meringue/cream for my lady. Portions for all were very generous indeed. Service was,as always, extremely friendly. Highly recommend.
Popped in last Wednesday, after touring the excellent local museum. Was hungry, and dry. A good pint and a sound steak later, I left happy and refreshed. Would gladly recommend. Ps. Loved the Navy cap braids behind the bar - wondering if there is a tradition in the town of joining the RN ?
When I visited Dobbins Inn, it was surrounded by scaffolding and didn't look that attractive, but don't be mislead, this is an historic building which is currently undergoing research into it's history and origins. Inside you can clearly see how old this establishment is. I visited with family for one of their Christmas nights. The actual room is quite small and could not accommodate a large number of people. There was still room for a small dance floor, tables, a bar and a couple of singers. The meal was very good, well prepared and served. I had the vegetable soup, salmon and Christmas pudding. Others had different options from the menu and everyone enjoyed their meals. I am planning to return with friends for a meal in the New Year and I'm sure we won't be disappointed.
I stayed here three nights. If I were to return and be within 100 miles of this place I would stay here again. Great location. Great bar. Wonderful restaurant – do yourself a favor and have the steak special. It’s a Wonderful ancient old building with layers of history. Loved the room. Friendly staff that were informative, engaging, and helpful. Close to the Castle, church and all necessities. You will be happy to stay here
